Thundercat - "Dragonball Durag"

10 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

THUNDERCAT – “DRAGONBALL DURAG”

Thundercat has shared another Funkadelic-esque song off his anticipated new album It Is What It Is (due 4/3 via Brainfeeder). This one was co-produced with Flying Lotus and here’s what Thundercat says about Dragon Ball Z, “I have a Dragon Ball tattoo… it runs everything. There is a saying that Dragon Ball is life.” And about durags: “There are two types of people in the world, the guy with the durag and the guy who doesn’t know what a durag is. The durag is a superpower, to turn your swag on… it does something, it changes you. If you have one in the wardrobe, think about wearing it tonight, and it may pop off because you never know what’s going to happen.”

ANNA CALVI – “EDEN” FT. CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG

Anna Calvi’s Hunted — a stripped-down version of her 2018 album Hunter with a few cool collaborators — is out in March and she’s just shared this track featuring Charlotte Gainsbourg. “Charlotte Gainsbourg has taught me so much as a singer, in how the most quiet of utterances can be the most dramatic and powerful of all,” says Anna. “When I was writing Eden I had Charlotte’s voice in my head – there’s a secrecy and quiet power to this song that always made me think of her. It’s a dream come true to have collaborated with her.”

VANISHING TWIN – IN PISCINA! EP

To help fund their upcoming US tour, London-based band Vanishing Twin are selling a new 7″ EP, In Piscina!, featuring four groovy instrumentals of the space age bachelor pad variety.

GIRL RAY – “FRIEND LIKE THAT”

One of the highlights from Girl Ray’s very good 2019 album, Girl, is “Friend Like That,” a buoyant, synthy number that recalls ’80s new wave. The video plays up on this, set in 1987 as three not-very-nice popular guys pretend to ask three awkward girls (played by Girl Ray’s Poppy, Sophie and Iris) to the school dance, only to pull a mean trick on them. Will things go full Carrie? “For this video we felt it was necessary to return to our past formula of recreating big-budget films with 0.1% of the money and 3 people whose experience of acting stops at narrating the year 1 nativity,” say the band. “We have always loved all the classic 80s high school rom-coms, and this particular song seemed to lend itself well to a John Hughes plot. With an extremely questionable storyline we approached Alex Cantouris to help fill in the gaps. After an incredibly stressful week of pulling favours everything was finally ready and we began filming. We actually filmed the prom scene in our old school in Muswell Hill which was a surreal and hilarious experience. It was definitely the funnest video we’ve ever shot, and is now our favourite too.”

CLAIRO – “FEBRUARY 15, 2020 LONDON, UK (DEMO)”

Clairo released her debut LP Immunity back in August, and followed it with collaborations with Mura Masa, Charli XCX, and Sassy 009. Now she’s shared a hazy, lo-fi leaning new demo track.

GOUGE AWAY – “CONSIDER”

Ahead of their tour with Circa Survive, Florida punks Gouge Away have shared a ripping new song, “Consider.” The Jack Shirley-recorded song will get released as a 7″ single on March 20 via Deathwish, backed by a cover of “Wave of Mutilation” by the Pixies (who Gouge Away are of course named after), and 25% of the profits will be donated to the International Rescue Committee.

SYSTEM OF A DOWN’S SERJ TANKIAN & JOHN DOLMAYAN – “STARMAN” (DAVID BOWIE COVER)

As mentioned, System of a Down drummer John Dolmayan is releasing a covers album under the moniker These Grey Men, and it features various guest vocalists including SOAD frontman Serj Tankian on Talking Heads and David Bowie covers. Their cover of Bowie’s “Starman” is out now, and it pretty much sounds like what you might expect two System of a Down members covering Bowie to sound like. Check it out.

FLESHWATER (mem VEIN) – DEMO2020
Fleshwater is a new band with members of modern-day metalcore greats Vein, and they just released their three-song demo2020 which finds them exploring a heavy/atmospheric divide that fans of Deftones, Hum, Smashing Pumpkins, Hyperview-era Title Fight, and stuff are gonna wanna hear.

KYLE FORESTER – “STRANGE VISION”

Kyle Forester has played keyboards in a lot of groups over the last 15 years, including Woods, Crystal Stilts, The Ladybug Transistor and was part of David Berman’s Purple Mountains band. He also makes his own jangly guitar pop that’s not too far from what Real Estate do, and will release his second solo album, Hearts in Gardens, this Friday.

LAKE RUTH – “SAD SONG”

“Some time ago Renee Tamraz mentioned she was working on an epic tome tentatively called ‘A Long History of Men’, her ruminations on human romantic foibles,” says Lake Ruth’s Hewson Chen of the band’s new EP. “It turns out her work on the subject was also conducive to her having written a sizable pile of songs covering time-tested, universal topics such as unrequited love, a good thing gone sour, and pathologically obsessing over your exes. We couldn’t resist the call to set these to music.”
