10 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

ESPERANZA SPALDING – “12 LITTLE SPELLS” & “TO TIDE US OVER”

Esperanza Spalding is in the midst of rolling out a new twelve-song project called 12 Little Spells. Her plan is to release one song a day at 12:12 PM through October 18, and then on October 19 the full album will hit streaming services. The first two, the title track and “To Tide Us Over,” are now out, and they’re both appealing doses of genre-defying experimental pop. Check them out and stay tuned for more.

MEG BAIRD & MARY LATTIMORE – “DAMAGED SUNSET”

Meg Baird (Heron Oblivion, Espers) and harpist Mary Lattimore are releasing their anticipated collaborative album Ghost Forests on November 9 and second single “Damaged Sunset” is another gorgeous dose of psych-folk that’s keeping us excited to hear the rest.

NAO – “CURIOSITY”

UK R&B singer Nao’s new album Saturn comes out on October 26 and she has now shared another single from it, “Curiosity.” “I have to have a seductive track on every album. I had ‘Feels Like’ on ‘For All We Know’ and this fills the same role. It’s one of the more left-field tracks on the album but my sense is the OG Nao fans will like it. It’s quite a visceral song and has that half-time tension which tends to translate really well to the live show. I think it might become a highlight at the show,” says Nao.

PELL – “SIMPLE AND PLAIN” (ft. IMAD ROYAL)

Rapper/singer Pell has been dropping a string of singles lately — possibly teasing towards an upcoming project — and the latest is the lively, soulful “Simple and Plain.”

LONGWAVE – “STAY WITH ME”

In hibernation for the last decade, NYC’s shoegaze rockers are back with new album due out next year and have just released its first single — the slick, anthemic “Stay With Me.” They’re on tour too.

VALLEY LODGE – “COME BACK TO BED”

Dave Hill’s band Valley Lodge (whose song “Go” is the theme to Last Week Tonight with John Oliver) will release new album Fog Machine on October 19 via TeePee. The first single is throwback rocker “Come Back to Bed.” “I kind of imagine this is the song a band full of dudes in slightly-too-small denim jackets play at a high school battle of the bands in some ’70s movie where all the high school students are clearly way too old to still be in high school,” Dave told Popmatters.

MICHAEL O – “POWER’S OUT” / “HAUNTED” / “FOR YOURSELF”

Michael Olivares, who fronts San Francisco combo The Mantles, has just released a new solo 7″. The three songs on it aren’t too far from what he does in The Mantles: hazy psych pop with a distinct British bent. All three tracks are winners.

LYCIA – “A FAILURE”

Arizona darkwave vets Lycia are preparing to release a new album, In Flickers on October 26. Following the heavy, atmospheric “Rewrite,” the band have shared another new song, the synthy “A Failure.”

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK, SALT-N-PEPA, TIFFANY, DEBBIE GIBSON & NAUGHTY BY NATURE – “80s BABY”

It’s the ’80s nostalgia posse cut that’s almost too good (or too bad) to be true.
