10 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

YEAR OF THE KNIFE – “FATAL”

Having just signed to Pure Noise Records, Delaware hardcore crew Year of the Knife dropped the crushing new single “Fatal.” It’ll appear on the band’s upcoming compilation, Ultimate Aggression, which includes their 2017 EP Ultimate Disease and their 2018 EP First State, Aggression, plus this new song (due April 5 via Pure Noise). No word yet on a proper new album, but this new song is making us excited for one.

TELEKINESIS – “A PLACE IN THE SUN”

Michael Benjamin Lerner will release Effluxion, his new album as Telekinesis, on February 8 via Merge. The new single is “A Place in the Sun,” which comes with a video, directed by Kayhl Cooper, which shows a couple dozen people reacting to the song for the first time. “This video was filmed in people’s personal spaces: their apartment, their workplace, their studio,” says Cooper. “I told them they could dance or sit still, but they really just had to listen. Having this song in the headphones immediately put them in a completely separate world. I sort of just let the camera run from there.”

MADELINE KENNEY – “HELPLESS” / FLOCK OF DIMES – “THE SISTERS”

Jenn Wasner of Wye Oak will soon be on tour as Flock of Dimes, out with her friend and collaborator Madeline Kenney. (Jenn produced Madeline’s most recent LP.) To support the tour, they’ve got a new split digital single on the way with new songs from Flock of Dimes (“The Sisters”) and Madeline (“Helpless”). It’s out April 19 but you can listen to both sides right now.

TRONOS (mem NAPALM DEATH) – “BIRTH WOMB”

Tronos is a new band from Napalm Death’s Shane Embury, Napalm Death producer Russ Russell, and drummer Dirk Verbeuren (ex-Soilwork, currently in Megadeth). “Birth Womb” is the lead single off their upcoming debut LP, which we wrote more about here.

DAMIEN JURADO – “SOUTH”

“South” is the lead single off Damien Jurado’s upcoming bare-bones, mostly acoustic album In The Shape of A Storm, which we wrote more about here.

ZIG-ZAGS – “PUNK FUCKING METAL”

“Punk Fucking Metal” is the perfect name for this new ripper, which we wrote more about here.

HOWE GELB (GIANT SAND) – “ON THE FENCE”

Giant Sand frontman Howe Gelb has a new solo album on the way, titled Gathered and out March 8 via Fire. You can check out the spare, pretty “On the Fence” here and if you’re in NYC, he plays tonight.

FILTHY FRIENDS – “LAST CHANCE COUNTY”

Indie rock supergroup Filthy Friends, featuring members of Sleater-Kinney (Corin Tucker), R.E.M. (Peter Buck), and more, release their sophomore album, Emerald Valley, on May 3, and they’ve shared its first single, “Last Chance County,” which we wrote more about here.

WEATHERBOX – “SMELLY”

Weatherbox are back from hiatus and released a new song, “Smelly,” which we wrote more about here.
