11 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

THE ORIELLES – “COME DOWN ON JUPITER”

UK group The Orielles will be back with their second album, Disco Volador, on February 28 via Heavenly. Like their 2018 single “Bobbi’s Second World” (which finds its way onto this album), the album finds the group continuing to explore dance music. “Its literal interpretation from Spanish means flying disc but everyone experiences things differently. Disco Volador could be a frisbee, a UFO, an alien nightclub or how you feel when you fly; what happens to your body physically or that euphoric buzz from a great party,” says bassist and singer, Esme. “But it is an album of escape; if I went to space, I might not come back.” First single “Come Down on Jupiter” is a jazzy and light appetizer for the album, and its video — shot at Arments pie & mash shop in Kennington, London — replays a single moment over and over to heightened dramatic tension. Tea and toast are involved.

JOHN MORELAND – “EAST OCTOBER”

Folk/country single John Moreland will release his fifth album, simply titled LP5, on February 7 via 30 Tigers. (His last album was for 4AD.) He made the album in Denton, Texas, with producer Matt Pence and it features appearances by Bonnie Whitmore, Will Johnson, and regular collaborator John Calvin Abney. The first single is a bit of dust-caked introspection titled “East October.”

YOUNG GUV – ‘GUV II’ (ALBUM STREAM)

Fucked Up guitarist Ben Cook will release his second Young Guv album of 2019 this Friday. Like his first, GUV II has jangly power pop on it but Cook tells Fader that for this one he also wanted to get “funky, sophista-poppy, yachty, and then back to the classic sounding stuff, and then ending with ‘Can’t Say Goodbye,’ which is kinda on some Christopher Cross in the basement type shit.” Cook also says he sees the two-volume GUV record as more of a singles compilation than a cohesive album statement. You can stream Vol 2 now.

TAYLOR HAWKINS & THE COATTAIL RIDERS – “GET THE MONEY” (ft. CHRISSIE HYNDE, JOE WALSH, DUFF MCKAGAN)

Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins has released the title track off his upcoming album Get The Money, and it’s one of the most star-studded songs on this all-around star-studded album. It’s some weird psych/prog/reggae/rock fusion that finds Taylor duetting with Pretenders singer Chrissie Hynde, and also features Eagles/James Gang guitarist Joe Walsh and former Guns N’ Roses/Velvet Revolver bassist Duff McKagan.

BLACK TUSK – “GALLOWS HILL”

Savannah’s Black Tusk have shared a new song from Graveface Records’ upcoming compilation which is being released to help fund the Graveface Museum in Savannah. Black Tusk’s Andrew Fidler says, “‘Gallows Hill’ is inspired by the history of the Salem Witch trials, in which innocents were persecuted by those who were afraid of anything different. When we were asked by Graveface to contribute a song to a comp dealing we the subject matter of cults and serial killers and fear of the unknown, we felt it fitting to write about an event that truly cemented the rule of mass hysteria into our cultural and political systems while highlighting a segment of our societies penchant for persecuting a set of ideals or belief system or even just the way a person identifies themselves or how they choose to live outside a set of norms established by religion.”

DAY OF ERRORS (BILL WARD) – “DARK”

Former Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward recently released a solo single, and today his band Day of Errors released a new song, “Dark.” It’s not exactly Master of Reality, but guitarist Joe Amodea is taking more than a few notes from Tony Iommi with his slowed-down riffage on this song, and it’s always great to hear doom with Ward behind the kit.

WICCA PHASE SPRINGS ETERNAL – “HARDCORE”

Emo-rapper Wicca Phase Springs Eternal released Suffer On back in February, and has kept busy releasing new music since. His newest single is “HARDCORE,” which he told The FADER about, saying, “Suffer On was an album about a longing I experienced over the course of several years, and had been saving up to let loose on what i consider my first proper full length release as Wicca Phase. That longing — hopeless, selfish, melodramatic — has been resolved, and in its place is the will to move forward, take what is mine, and live unashamed of my desires. That is ‘HARDCORE.'”

FRANK OCEAN – “DHL” (ft. BOYS NOIZE)

After having some of his new music previewed at his new queer club night in NYC, Frank Ocean officially released this new single, which was produced by Boys Noize. You can read more about it here.

BROOKE CANDY – “FMU” (ft. RICO NASTY, prod. BOYS NOIZE)

“DHL” isn’t the only new single Boys Noize produced. He also gifted Brooke Candy with a beat for her new single “FMU” (“fuck me up”), which also features a show-stealing verse by the unstoppable Rico Nasty.

LIVE SKULL – “IDENTICAL SKIES”

NYC experimental rock vets are releasing their first album in 30 years, Saturday Night Massacre, in November, and the first single is “Identical Skies.” Read more about it here.

NO WIN – “BLOOD ON YOUR TOOTH”

No Win– the nom de rock of producer, engineer and former FIDLAR drummer Danny Nogueiras — is back with a new EP, Blood on Your Tooth. The title track is a catchy bit of heartland rock. You can also catch No Win on tour this month.
