So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

EX HEX – “TOUGH ENOUGH”

Ex Hex have just shared the video for new single “Tough Enough” that’s off their forthcoming second album, It’s Real. The song is a real glammy punk ripper, like you’ve come to expect from Mary Timony and the rest of the band, but the video (directed by Brandon Herman) shoot goes south when nuclear armageddon hits, with chaos and zombies ensuing.

ROYAL TRUX – “YEAR OF THE DOG”

The Lunar New Year is tomorrow and with it begins the Year of the Pig. Royal Trux celebrate the last day of the Year of the Dog with a song titled just that. “Sorry to see such an auspicious brown earth dog leave town,” says RTX’s Jennifer Herrema, “but we gotta make room for the pig.” Royal Trux new album, White Stuff, is out March 1.

LANDFILL CREW (RANCID’S TIM ARMSTRONG – “LANDFILL CREW” & “POETS IN THE NIGHT”

Rancid’s Tim Armstrong has a new “fictional” band called Landfill Crew with Kevin Bivona (The Transplants, The Interrupters), Dash Hutton, and John Morrical, and Tim says: “The Landfill Crew is a fictional animated punk rock band set in the 1980’s. I play one of the characters named Bagga and my friend Tippa Lee plays the character Hux. Tippa Lee is one of my favorite Jamaican vocalists that has been recording reggae music in Kingston since the early 80’s. J Bonner animated the videos and helped develop the characters. Hope you guys enjoy this 4 song EP it as much as we do.” Fictional or not, the songs are very real and they sound like Tim Armstrong-style ska/punk/reggae.

Q DA FOOL & KENNY BEATS – BAD INFLUENCE EP STREAM

Maryland rapper Q Da Fool (who you may have recently heard on the recent IDK single) dropped a new EP which is a collaboration with fast-rising rap producer (and former EDM producer) Kenny Beats (who also works with Vince Staples, Rico Nasty, ALLBLACK, Key!, and more). Kenny’s beats are the perfect fit for a forceful delivery like Q’s, and the EP sounds pretty great all around.

STEVE EARLE & THE DUKES – “L.A. FREEWAY”

Steve Earle & The Dukes will release their album-length tribute to Guy Clark in March and have just shared another song from it. Says Steve of his songwriting mentor, “Guy had cancer and wrote songs until the day he died…he painted, he built instruments, he owned a guitar shop in the Bay Area where the young Bobby Weir hung out. He was older and wiser. You hung around with him and knew why they call what artists do disciplines. Because he was disciplined.”

DANIEL AVERY – “UNDER THE TALLEST ARCH”

Electronic musician Daniel Avery is releasing Songs for Alpha: B-Sides & Remixes on April 5 via Phantasy/Mute. As the title suggests these are track from the same sessions as 2018’s Songs for Alpha, and some remixes too. You can check out the video for b-side “Under the Tallest Arch” which is dark, sinister and sultry.

SONNY & THE SUNSETS – “TAKE A HARD LOOK DOWN THE LONG CORRIDOR”

Sonny & The Sunsets new album Hairdressers from Heaven was produced by The Shins’ James Mercer and Yuuki Matthews and will be the first for Sonny’s new Rocks in Your Head label. Learn more here.

HOMESHAKE – “ANOTHER THING”

Homeshake, the band featuring onetime Mac DeMarco guitarist Peter Sagar, release their new album, Helium, next week and here’s another single from it. “Another Thing” is light and airy pop with just a hint of soul.

SIMON BONNEY – “DUCHESS” (SCOTT WALKER COVER)

Crime & The City Solution’s Simon Bonney has a new compilation on the way which includes a number of tracks from his unreleased last-’90s solo album, Eyes of Blue. One of those is this lovely cover of Scott Walker’s classic Scott 4 cut “Duchess.”

DEFAULT GENDERS – MAIN POP GIRL 2019 (ALBUM STREAM)

Formerly half of Elite Gymnastics, James Brooks rechristened his current project Default Genders from Dead Girlfriends, and has now released his second LP with the moniker. Main Pop Girl 2019 is packed with layers of electronic beats and distorted vocals, and includes an entirely unrecognizable Taylor Swift cover and a Bright Eyes-referencing easter egg.
