12 New Songs Out Today

Desert Daze 2017 - Friday
La Femme at Desert Daze 2017 (more by Coen Rees)

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

CASS MCCOMBS & THE CHAPIN SISTERS – “DOLPHINS” (FRED NEIL COVER)

Singer/songwriter Cass McCombs and folk duo The Chapin Sisters have teamed for a cover of Fred Neil’s 1967 song “Dolphins.” It seems like Fred Neil is a clear influence on both of these acts, but Cass and The Chapin Sisters don’t just do a straightforward rendition of the song — they really make it their own.

PORTRAYAL OF GUILT – “YOUR WAR” (ft. DYLAN WALKER of FULL OF HELL)

Austin hardcore crushers Portrayal of Guilt are releasing their new album Let Pain Be Your Guide on November 16 via Gilead Media. The album was produced by Matt Michel of screamo vets Majority Rule, and it features Full of Hell’s Dylan Walker on new single “Your War,” which is part classic screamo/post-hardcore, part death metal, and all ripper. LA FEMME- “RUNWAY”

French band La Femme have released “Runway” which was commissioned by Hedi Slimane for her first fashion show for luxury clothing brand Celine. Given reports of the show, this 20-minute track may have been the best thing to come out of it.

HINDS – “ROOKIE” (ACOUSTIC)

Spanish band Hinds have shared a new version of “Rookie” which was originally on this year’s LP I Don’t Run and is available now as this acoustic rendition as an Amazon Original Single. “When Carlotta and I first met we got obsessed with a version of ‘Revolution’ from the Beatles called ‘Revolution 1,’ slower softer and better,” says the band’s Ana García Perrote. “We wrote ‘Rookie’ with one acoustic guitar, in Carlotta’s terrace so this is us, one more time, trying to be like the Beatles.”

MADELINE KENNEY – “PERFECT SHAPES”

Madeline Kenney’s Jenn Wasner-produced sophomore album Perfect Shapes comes out on Friday via Carpark, and she’s sharing one final single, the title track, before then. “The phrase ‘Perfect Shapes’ floated into my head one evening when I was sitting outside my Oakland apartment and staring at a fence,” she says. “I wasn’t sure what it meant but I knew it would be my next record. I walked back inside and wrote this song, and only now do I really see what I was talking about; nostalgia and pain, leaving and staying, seeing and appreciating what is beautiful and what hurts.”

CLAMS CASINO x PLU2O NASH – “GRAVITY”

The latest Adult Swim single is a collaboration from hip hop producers Clams Casino and Plu2o Nash, and it’s an atmospheric, lazer-synth experiment that sounds like it could soundtrack a sci-fi thriller.
