12 New Songs Out Today
So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…
ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER – “LOVE IN THE TIME OF LEXAPRO”
Having released the ambitious Age Of earlier this year, Oneohtrix Point Never is back with a new EP, Love in the Time of Lexapro, which is out November 23 via Warp. It’s got a rework of Age Of track “Last Known Image Of A Song” by Ryuichi Sakamoto and and acoustic version of “Babylon” featuring (Sandy) Alex G. The title track, meanwhile, is just the kind of interstellar new age that the late Carl Sagan probably would’ve wanted to use for Cosmos.

SWERVEDRIVER – “MARY WINTER”
Shoegaze greats Swervedriver will soon be back with Future Ruins, their first album in nearly four years. First single and the album’s lead track, “Mary Winter,” finds them in fine, guitar-blazing form. More here.

CITIZEN – “OPEN YOUR HEART”
Ohio post-hardcore band Citizen have shared a previously unreleased song from the sessions for last year’s As You Please. Like much of that album, “Open Your Heart” is still a rocker but it’s on their softer side — it even brings in some strings and piano at the end.

ROBYN – “HUMAN BEING”
Robyn releases her highly anticipated first album in eight years, Honey, tomorrow, and before it’s out she’s shared one last single, “Human Being,” via Adult Swim Singles. Its slick beats are made to groove to, but under those are the real heart of the song, with the lyrics, “I’m a human being / and so are you / my heart can’t stop beating / don’t know what to do.”

TEE GRIZZLEY – “PRAY FOR THE DRIP” (ft. OFFSET)
2017 was a breakout year for Tee Grizzley, and it included the release of his great mixtape My Moment and his also great collab mixtape with Lil Durk, Bloodas. This year’s major label debut album Activated often felt a bit too commercial, though, so it’s possibly an exciting thing that he just announced a sequel to My Moment. The Still My Moment mixtape is due November 9, and it includes the ominous new single “Pray For The Drip,” which features Migos’ Offset. Listen (via Complex):

THE ALCHEMIST – “FORK IN THE POT” (ft. SCHOOLBOY Q, CONWAY, WESTSIDE GUNN)
Happy birthday to The Alchemist! In celebration of the occasion, he dropped this new track which features some pretty exciting guests. Schoolboy Q steals the show, but Conway and Westside Gunn’s throwback flows are nothing to scoff at either.

IDK – “MORAL” (ft. MAXO KREAM)
Maryland rapper IDK is gearing up to release an EP called Idk & Friends 🙂 on November 9, and he shared the Maxo Kream collab from that, “Moral.” IDK and Maxo’s styles are pretty different, but they work well together and this collab reminds you that both are just getting better and better.

VAN MORRISON – “GOT TO GO WHERE THE LOVE IS”
The Prophet Speaks, which is Van Morrison’s 40th (!) studio album, is out December 7 and here’s another preview cut from it. “Got To Go Where The Love Is” is one of the LP’s six Van originals and finds him, and his distinctive, soulful voice, still in fine form.

THOM YORKE – “UNMADE”
Thom Yorke’s Suspiria soundtrack drops at midnight and he let one last song loose from it ahead of the release, which we wrote more about here.

MOONFACE – “MINOTAUR FORGIVING KNOSSOS”
Spencer Krug is releasing his seventh and final album under the moniker of Moonface, This One’s For The Dancer & This One’s For The Dancer’s Bouquet, on November 2, and he’s shared a second, Greek mythology-inspired single, “Minotaur Forgiving Knossos.” The song starts with Spencer’s voice obscured by heavy vocoder (his way of representing the character of the Minotaur) but it emerges more by the end, all under a steady marimba-driven melody.

GENERATIONALS – “BEGGARS IN THE HOUSE OF PLENTY”
New Orleans band Generationals — aka Grant Widmer and Ted Joyner — opted out of the album cycle last year and started releasing singles on a regular basis. Those are now being collected in a new compilation State Dogs: Singles 2017-18 which will be out December 7. That will include their new single “Beggars in the House of Plenty” which takes aim at the current political state, which is even more evident in the video. “‘Beggars in the House of Plenty’ is a song about the perils of oligarchy and the disproportionate power of the wealthiest in our society,” say Grant. “Since the time we made this video in mid-September, we watched the Kavanaugh hearings reinforce our underlying point: the US Senate is a theater where oligarchs grandstand and fake indignation in service of money and power, and in my view, it should be mocked, ridiculed, disrespected and ultimately abolished. Enjoy the video!”

GRAPETOOTH – “BLOOD”
Chicago synthpop duo Grapetooth, which features Twin Peaks’ Clay Frankel and Home-Sick’s Chris Bailoni, will release their self-titled debut album on November 9 via Polyvinyl. They’ve just released new single “Blood” which seems fitting for this pre-Halloween time we’re currently in, though it’s not so much spooky as rousingly anthemic.
