12 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

BOB MOULD – “WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO”

Bob Mould has been on a hot streak with his last few solo albums, and going by recent single “Sunshine Rock” and the just-released “What Do You Want Me To Do,” it looks like the upcoming Sunshine Rock will continue that hot streak. This one’s a real ripper that recalls the Husker Du days and sounds fresh in 2018 too.

JAY ROCK – “SHIT REAL” (ft. TEE GRIZZLEY)

Jay Rock’s Redemption remains one of the year’s strongest rap albums, and today he follows it with “Shit Real,” which features Tee Grizzley (who we named one of the best new(ish) artists of 2017). Like Redemption does, “Shit Real” sees Jay Rock sticking to the cold, hard sound he’s had since day one and still finding new ways to toy with his formula.

DURAND JONES & THE INDICATIONS – “DON’T KNOW YOU”

This band of vintage soul and R&B lovers will release their new album American Love Call on March 1 via Dead Oceans/Colemine Records. The first single is the string-laden “Don’t You Know” which evokes memories of the height of early ’70s orchestral soul and sounds pretty great. Look for them at a venue near you in 2019.

TOY – “YOU MAKE ME FORGET MYSELF”

UK motorik psych combo TOY seem to be switching gears on their new album Happy in the Hollow, which is out January 25. The first TOY song to feature lead vocals from bassist Maxim “Panda” Barron, “You Make Me Forget Myself” is downright pastoral and pretty, floating along very nicely. “It has a feeling of estrangement about it,” says the band’s Tom Dougall. “The sound of someone you love who’s going away and it doesn’t matter.”

ROSE ELINOR DOUGALL – “MAKE IT WITH YOU”

Tom Dougall’s sister, Rose, meanwhile is back with her first new music since 2017’s Stellular. “Make it With You” is a glammy ballad that Dougall tell The Quietus is “a simple love song, but set against the fear of an uncertain, turbulent future. I suppose this song is about striving to cling onto those ideas, against what can feel like diminishing odds.”

MICHAEL CHAPMAN – “IT’S TOO LATE”

Folk legend Michael Chapman is still very active, and he’s set to release his new album True North on February 8 via Paradise of Bachelors. Like his 2017 album 50, Steve Gunn produced and played guitar on it. The lead single is “It’s Too Late.” Chapman’s voice has grown raspier with age, but his songwriting and guitar work remains as gripping as it was on his early ’70s classics.

TEEN – “ONLY WATER”

Brooklyn trio TEEN, made up of sisters Teeny, Lizzie, and Katherine Lieberson, will return with their fourth album, Good Fruit, which is out March 1 via Carpark. The first single is “Only Water” which is an unbeat number about a more somber subject, coming to grips with the death of their father. “As it has been many years since his death, my relationship to losing him has changed,” says Teeny. “I have been thinking a lot about the idea of possession and how it can even exist once someone has died. The song questions this principle; if we are all water, can’t I have you? Can I be you? Which in, abstractly, is a celebration of letting go.” They’ll be touring in 2019 as well.

PERFECT SON – “IT’S FOR LIFE”

Polish artist Tobiasz Biliński, previously known as Coldair, is now recording under the name Perfect Son and he signed to Sub Pop for his new album Cast (due February 15 via his new label home). He co-produced the album with Marcin Buźniak (who also mixed and mastered it), and there’s additional production from Kurt Vile/War On Drugs collaborator Jeff Zeigler. The first single is “It’s For Life,” a heavily-layered, beat-driven dose of appealing art pop.

RINA SAWAYAMA – “FLICKER”

London-via-Japan pop artist Rina Sawayama released has been following her 2017 debut mini album with some new singles, the latest of which, “Flicker,” found her “thinking how our name shapes our experience in life and identities in a deeper way than we realize. Whether it’s a name that no one can say, or the frustration of being misgendered, or quite simply being misunderstood for who you truly are – this is a song for you.” Musically “Flicker” finds Rina interpreting the sounds of ’90s R&B with a slightly futuristic twist.

YOU TELL ME (FT FIELD MUSIC’s PETER BREWIS) – “WATER COOLER”

You Tell Me, the duo of Peter Brewis (Field Music) and Sarah Hayes from orchestral pop group Admiral Follow, have shared another new song off their upcoming debut LP. Where previous singles have dabbled in skittering folk pop, this one sounds a lot closer to the creatively rhythmic style of Peter’s main band. “‘Water Cooler’ was intended to be a look at an inept office romance,” says Brewis. “I was literally imagining two office workers failing to talk to each other at the water cooler. No metaphors here.”

PARTNER – “LOST MY PICK, CAN I BORROW ONE?”

Queer Canadian riff-rockers and 2018 Polaris Prize nominees Partner announced their first ever West Coast tour, and they’re celebrating with this short new song, which pairs silly lyrics with some serious shredding.

POTTERY – “HANK WILLIAMS”

Montreal’s Pottery have been gaining buzz for the last year but only just today released a song the world can hear, they hyperactive mutant pop number “Hank Williams.” Read more about it here.
