12 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

ARCADE FIRE – “BABY MINE” (from DUMBO)

Tim Burton’s upcoming live action/CGI remake of Disney animated film Dumbo features Arcade Fire covering the original film’s “Baby Mine” and the band manage to make it their own while still staying faithful to the original. “My mom plays the harp on the track, my brother the theremin, my wife sings and plays drums, and our son even plays the triangle, as well as the rest of our ‘family’ in Arcade Fire,” Win Butler said of the song, which will play over the closing credits. “I will forever relate to the song thinking about the people I hold so dear that are ‘so precious to me.’ Listen for the cameo of my grandpa Alvino’s famous Sonovox at the end.”

PATIENCE – “THE GIRLS ARE CHEWING GUM”

Patience, aka the synthpop solo project of onetime Veronica Falls singer/guitarist Roxanne Clifford, will release her debut album, Dizzy Spells, on May 5 via Night School in the UK and Roxanne’s own label, Winona Records, in the U.S. The first single is the fizzy and sweet “The Girls Are Chewing Gum” and you can watch the video, which Roxanne directed, here:

KAREN O & DANGER MOUSE – “TURN THE LIGHT”

Karen O & Danger Mouse’s collaborative album Lux Prima is out this Friday and they’ve just shared the video for “Turn the Light,” a mid-tempo number that is almost ’70s style lite rock disco…and Karen’s voice works very well in that environment.

JASON ANDERSON – SHADOWS (ALBUM STREAM)

While indie vet Jason Anderson finishes his next proper album, he’s releasing a “lost” project each month in 2019 and his March project, Shadows, is out now. Jason says, “Shadows is a record about the myriad ways we look for meaning and support—in work, in community, in religion, in love—amidst the increasing isolation and fragmentation of daily life. These existential anchors can shift and even, sometimes, distressingly enough, erode over time. Indeed, something strange and disorienting happens when the things that have kept you whole start to feel hollow—when “purpose” feels, well, purposeless. Consequently, in the absence of any one tether—in moments of ennui, of loss, of grief—I suppose that’s what renders even the smallest, most unassuming joys and tenuous connections so vital.”

BRYCE DESSNER – “CONCERTO FOR TWO PIANOS” (CLIP)

While The National have an anticipated new album on the way, Bryce Dessner is also releasing a new classical album, El Chan, on April 5 via Deutsche Grammopho. He made it with Katia and Marielle Labèque, and you can hear a clip of “Concerto For Two Pianos” (performed by the Labèque sisters, Orchestre de Paris and Matthias Pintscher) now.

VESSEL & RAKHI SINGH – “WRITTEN IN FIRE (EXCERPT 1)”

Tri Angle-signed electronic artist Vessel released the maximalist, classical music-inspired Queen of Golden Dogs last year, and now he has teamed with violinist Rakhi Singh for a collaborative piece, Written In Fire, composed for string quartet and electronics. The full piece was premiered at the Aldeburgh Music Festival last year, and it will be performed at more UK venues this May, and an excerpt is now streaming online.

LION BABE – “WESTERN WORLD” (ft. RAEKWON)

Lion Babe are gearing up to release their new album Cosmic Wind on March 29 via AWAL, and they’ve shared “Western World” from it. It’s an addictive, danceable dose of funk that was inspired by Pet Shop Boys’ “West End Girls” and features the legendary Raekwon.

HOLLY HERNDON – “ETERNAL”

Holly Herndon has announced her anticipated new album PROTO (due 5/10 via 4AD), and she shared the new single “Eternal” which we wrote more about here.

BEAST COAST (PRO ERA, FLATBUSH ZOMBIES, UNDERACHIEVERS) – “LEFT HAND”

Beast Coast is the collaborative project from Pro Era (Joey Bada$$, Kirk Knight, Nyck Caution, CJ Fly, etc), Flatbush Zombies, and The Underachievers, and we wrote more about their debut single “Left Hand” here.

DALEK – “RESPECT TO THE AUTHORS”

Industrial rap vets Dälek are releasing a limited edition vinyl-only EP on March 22 and we wrote more about the title track here.

UNWED SAILOR – “OVID”

Post-rock vets Unwed Sailor are returning with their first album in 10+ years this May and we wrote more about new single “Ovid” here.

THE FAINT – “QUENCH THE FLAME”

The Faint’s new album drops this week and before it comes out you can hear one more song from it, “Quench the Flame,” which we wrote more about here.
