13 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

PEDRO THE LION – “MODEL HOMES”

Pedro the Lion have shared a second song from their first album in 15 years, Phoenix (due 1/18 via Polyvinyl). Compared to lead single “Yellow Bike,” “Model Homes” is a bit slower and more off-kilter, and it’s more proof that David Bazan hasn’t lost his touch one bit.

DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE – “SUMMER YEARS” (JIMMY TAMBORELLO REMIX)

Will we ever get another Postal Service album? Who can say, but for now this Jimmy Tamborello remix of Death Cab’s “Summer Years” (from this year’s Thank You For Today) reunites the two members and scratches that itch.

LITTLE SIMZ – “101FM”

UK rapper Little Simz has released her third single of 2018, and like the previous two, it shows her making a huge leap forward and it’s making us really excited to get a new album from her. This one sees Simz in a more laid back mode (compared to the recent “Boss”) over inventive, kinetic production.

HOLLY HERNDON & JLIN – “GODMOTHER” (ft. SPAWN)

Holly Herndon and Jlin are two of the most innovate, forward-thinking electronic artists to break out in the past few years, so it’s pretty exciting to learn that they teamed up for a collaborative song, which also features a third guest, which is actually a piece of artificial intelligence that Holly and Jlin named “Spawn.” The song is noisy and weird and definitely not easy listening, but it’s captivating in its weirdness.

LA DISPUTE – “ROSE QUARTZ” & “FULTON STREET I”

La Dispute finally announced their fourth album (and first for Epitaph) and shared two promising new songs, which we wrote more about here.

CZARFACE MEETS GHOSTFACE – “IRON CLAW”

As teased, Czarface (aka Inspectah Deck with 7L & Esoteric) are teaming with Inspectah Deck’s Wu-Tang Clanmate Ghostface Killah for a collaborative album. Czarface Meets Ghostface is due out February 15, and the first single is “Iron Claw,” which puts the Wu-Tang members’ tough, ’90s-style raps over futuristic, outer space production.

ANGELO DE AUGUSTINE – “KAITLIN”

Angelo De Augustine is releasing his new Doveman-produced album, Tomb, on January 18 via Sufjan Stevens’ Asthmatic Kitty records. He’s shared another new single, “Kaitlin,” a gently-strummed bare bones folk song, which he says is about ““an attempt to understand the intricacies of another person.”

SURACHAI – “AN UNFAMILIAR REFLECTION ACTIVATES A GATE” (ft. AARON HARRIS)

Musician/producer Surachai, who blends black metal and electronic music, is releasing his seventh album Come, Deathless on January 22 via BL_K Noise. It features contributions from The Locust keyboard player Joey Karam, vocalist Sara Kendall, and Isis/Palms drummer Aaron Harris, the latter of whom features on the noisy, rickety new single.

ESTA CODA – “BREATHE”

Tigers Jaw affiliates Esta Coda are releasing a new Will Yip-produced EP on Friday, and we wrote more about new single “Breathe” here.

MURRAY LIGHTBURN (THE DEARS) – “CHANGED MY WAYS”

Dears frontman Murray Lightburn will release new solo album, Hear Me Out, on February 22 via Dangerbird and has just dropped this new single. “I wanted it to be gentle and fragile yet strong – a tough balance that kind of encapsulates the album and its main theme,” says Murray. “I’m not at all a fan of any kind of machismo. I wanted this song and this album to convey my own version masculinity but totally void of that bullshit. I wanted something that was strong and confident without backing down or perceived as arrogant. I don’t really see or hear a lot of that these days especially from black men. In 2018, it’s not really pushed up front so here I am, trying. Wish me luck.”

THE LEMONHEADS – “OLD MAN BLANK” (BEVIS FROND COVER)

Evan Dando is releasing a sequel to The Lemonheads’ 2009 Varshons covers album and, from that, here’s his take on The Bevis Frond’s “Old Man Blank” (from their 1988 LP, Triptych). Like the original, Evan keeps things low-fi, with some dirty organ warming things up.

TORO Y MOI “ORDINARY PLEASURE”

Chaz Bundick has shared another new song from his forthcoming album Outer Peace, which is out in January. “Ordinary Pleasure,” is very TYM: very groovy, very catchy, very chill.

VAN GOOSE – “LAST BUS”

Shlomi Lavie plays drums in Marcy Playground (they of ’90s hit “Sex and Candy”) but also makes music on his own as Van Goose. He plays pretty much everything on his very catchy new single, “Last Bus,” that has kind of a mid-’00s, snarky, DFA feel. The song will be on the first Van Goose album, due in 2019, and he’s also got some shows coming up too.
