13 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

FOALS – “SUNDAY”

Foals have two albums on the way this year, and they’ve just shared “Sunday,” which begins as one of their signature, swaying anthems that then goes funky midway through. The song’s from Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost- Part 1 which is out next Friday (3/8), with Part 2 coming later this year.

JOHN VANDERSLICE – “WILL CALL”

John Vanderslice has shared a new track off his upcoming album The Cedars, this one being beautiful and glitchy. “This new track uses slightly off kilter electronic elements to create a feeling that teeters between grace and anxiety.” Mission accomplished, John.

MEREBA – “SANDSTORM” (ft. JID)

No, it’s not that “Sandstorm.” It’s the new single by rising R&B singer Mereba and it features sung harmonies from Atlanta rapper JID, whose involvement gives the song an extra boost.

DAMIEN JURADO – “LINCOLN”

Damien Jurado’s upcoming album In The Shape of A Storm sees him going in a much more stripped-down direction than his last few albums, with little more than his voice and acoustic guitar. The gorgeous “Lincoln” is the second taste of that.

KERO KERO BONITO – “THE OPEN ROAD”

The road song is as old as rock n’ roll itself (older, even) and Kero Kero Bonito have now made their contribution to the genre with “The Open Road” that’s one side of a new 7″ single. The song is specifically “about our North America tour last year, including anecdotes about the time a lorry nearly jackknifed into us in a blizzard.” It may not surprise you to learn that this single, which also includes “Swimming” from last year’s Time ‘n’ Place, is being released to promote KKB’s upcoming tour.

WILD PINK – “COACHES WHO CRY”

NYC indie rockers Wild Pink are releasing the 5 Songs EP this Friday (3/1) via Tiny Engines with three remixes and two new songs. One of those new songs, “Coaches Who Cry,” is out now. It’s a sunny, gentle indie rock song that sounds like it could’ve fit on the Garden State soundtrack. If you’re nostalgic for that kind of stuff, check this out.

ALAN VEGA – “YOU PAY – TOO MANY TEARDROPS”

A collaborative single from the late Alan Vega (of Suicide) and Mr. Pharmacist is coming out March 8 with this new song (one of Vega’s last-ever recordings) and remixes by Jim Sclavunos and JG Thirlwell. You can stream the original mix now, and you can pick up a vinyl copy of the single ahead of the release date at the Suicide tribute at NYC’s Coney Island Baby this Wednesday (2/27), which Gogol Bordello’s Eugene Hutz was added to.

GALLANT & ADRIAN YOUNGE – “STROBE LIGHTS”

Adrian Younge wrapped up his Black History Month edition of Amazon’s “Produced By” series with this new song with R&B singer Gallant. Younge’s orchestral, cinematic production is pretty different than what Gallant usually sings over, but he pulls it off expertly. Frank Ocean fans should check out this one.

LITTLE MAZARN – “DANCING IN THE DARK” (BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN COVER)

Austin’s Little Mazarn is the electric banjo and singing saw duo of Lindsey Verrill and Jeff Johnston, who on their own have collaborated with Okkervil River, Patty Griffin, Bill Callahan, and more over the years. Their upcoming sophomore album Io features contributions from Centro-matic’s Will Johnson, Thor Harris (Swans, Shearwater, etc), and more, and the first single is this stripped-down rendition of Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark” which is a very cool interpretation of the song and not just a straightforward cover. More info here.

THE RESONARS – “BEAGLE THEORY”

Tucson, Arizona’s Matt Rendon is back with his first album as The Resonars in six year. The album’s called No Exit and will be out April 19 via Trouble in Mind. Rendon is a real pop scholar, and imbues his songs with that deep knowledge. He says first single “Beagle Theory” owes a lot to The Hollies but we bet ’90s Britpop fans will dig this one too.

ALBERICH – “UNITY HOUSE”

Noise artist Alberich (aka Kris Lapke) has been active over the past few years with some EPs, collaborative releases, and his production work, and he releases his first proper full-length album in eight years with Quantized Angel on April 12 via Hospital Productions. The first single is “Unity House,” which marries crackling noise to a hypnotic speak-sung vocal, and the whole thing is pretty mesmerizing. More info here.

DRINKING BOYS AND GIRLS CHOIR – “RED SHIFT”

South Korean punks Drinking Boys and Girls Choir cite stuff like NOFX as influences, and you can hear that California skate punk coming through in their sound, but they’ve also got wonderfully twee-ish male/female harmonies that recall classic indie pop. Get a taste from new single “Red Shift,” which we wrote more about here.

POTTERY – “LADY SOLINAS”

Montreal’s Pottery, who’ve been building buzz for more than a year, have finally announced their debut record, which is out in May via Partisan. This new single is a garage/post-punk number about infamous Warhol shooter Valerie Solanas. Read more about it here.
