13 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

KOOL KEITH – “ZERO FUX” (ft. B-REAL)

Abstract rap legend Kool Keith is releasing a new album called KEITH on July 12 via Mello Music Group. The entire album was produced by Psycho Les of the Beatnuts, and guests include Paul Wall, Jeru the Damaja, and Cypress Hill’s B-Real, the latter of whom is on the psychedelic, head-nodding lead single “Zero Fux.” Keith’s been at it for over three decades, and he still sounds more fired-up than some rappers half his age.

CAVE IN – “SHAKE MY BLOOD”

Cave In are releasing their new album Final Transmission — which features the last-ever recordings by the late Caleb Scofield — on June 7 via Hydra Head, and today they released its second single, “Shake My Blood.” This one is on the band’s spacey, atmospheric side, and it’s another excellent taste of this bittersweet album.

RVG – “ALEXANDRA”

Australian band RVG are back with their first new music since releasing their debut album, 2017’s great A Quality of Mercy. “Alexandra” was produced by Victor Van Vugt (Nick Cave, Robert Forster) and is both jangly and strident.  “‘Alexandra’ is a song which came together quickly, but which felt like it uncompromisingly needed to be recorded,” says singer/songwriter Romy Vager. “The lyrics, [which] describe a story of personal oppression at the hands of one’s community, [are] an allegory for the broader oppression marginalized people are subjected to.” RVG will soon be on tour with Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever.

J ROBBINS – “UN-BECOMING”

Not only are Jawbox finally reuniting this year, frontman J Robbins is releasing his first-ever solo album, Un-becoming, on May 31 via Dischord. The title track is out now, and it channels that kind of arty, mathy post-hardcore that was very popular amongst Dischord bands during Jawbox’s prime.

MEN I TRUST – “NORTON COMMANDER (ALL WE NEED)

We’re still waiting for the release of Men I Trust’s third album, Oncle Jazz, but while we wait they’ve shared another new single, the funky “Norton Commander (All We Need),” which is accompanied by a video filmed by the band.

THE S.L.P. – “FAVOURITES” (FEAT. LITTLE SIMZ)

Serge Pizzorno, the guitarist for UK dancerockers Kasabian, has a new solo project, The S.L.P. His first single, “Favourites,” features a guest appearance from Little Simz, who released one of the best rap albums this year so far, GREY Area, in February.

FRENCH VANILLA – “SUDDENLY”

L.A. band French Vanilla release their new album Why Am I Not Myself? in a couple weeks and here’s another danceable, skronky cut from it. Despite the groove, “Suddenly” is all about not going out, perfect for cranking up at home while no one is watching.

MEGA BOG – “FOR THE OLD WORLD”

Mega Bog’s new single from her upcoming Dolphine is an interesting creature: spectral, at times suave and smooth, and baroque. “When I was writing ‘For the Old World,'” says Erin Birgy (who is Mega Bog), “the song was kind of oozing out, sneering and murky, sort of like the feeling I sometimes get when I’ve spent so much time (sometimes years) on the quality/integrity/authenticity of a project, whether it’s a social/romantic/friendship or music/meaning/impressions-and then something really hits you in a devastating way, and you’re on this gnarly bender where you become deliberately evil to reflect the absurdity of the whole story. Like walking out of the shower, shaved and sudsed, the light is glowing, the thunderstorm is over, and you trip in a patch of poison ivy and watch your skin boil, torturing that idyllic splinter of peace.” The video for the song, meanwhile, was inspired by Ingmar Bergman.

REMO DRIVE – “AROUND THE SUN”

Minnesota indie pop punks Remo Drive have shared another single off their upcoming album natural, Everyday Degradation (due 5/31 via Epitaph), and this one shows off a real sense of classic pop songwriting, complete with sunny harmonies and falsettos.

JASON ANDERSON – HIDDEN LIGHT

Jason Anderson continues his 2019 series of releasing a “lost” project each month while he gears up for his next proper album. His latest one is Hidden Light, which was recorded in New York with his late 2000s band Jason Anderson & 57th Street, who used to regularly gig at places like Cake Shop, Death By Audio, The Rock Shop, and Union Hall. It’s on the heartland rock side, and it’s a very cool batch of songs. Read more here.

THE SOFT CAVALRY – “DIVE”

The Soft Cavalry, the duo of Slowdive’s Rachel Goswell and her husband Steven Clarke, will release their debut album in July, and here’s a second song from it. “Dive” is lush, and mellow and enveloping widescreen rock.

TORCHE – “SLIDE”

“Slide” is the first single off Torche’s anticipated new album Admission, which you can read more about here.

TYCHO – “PINK & BLUE” (FT. SAINT SINNER)

Tycho will release new album Weather on June 12 via Mom + Pop / Ninja Tune and new single “Pink & Blue” adds a new element to their ethereal, blissed-out sound: vocals. In this case that of Saint Sinner.
