13 New Songs Out Today
So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…
MOUNT KIMBIE – “SOUTHGATE”
Shapeshifting electronic duo Mount Kimbie released the very good Love What Survives last year, and this year they’ll release a DJ-Kicks mix (due 9/28). Among its 23 tracks is a Nina Kraviz remix of Mount Kimbie’s own “Blue Train Lines” and the new Mount Kimbie song “Southgate.” It’s a minimal song, powered by a deceptively simple synth and some shuffling percussion, and a Rinse FM radio rip of the song is out now.

YOWLER – “WTFK”
Yowler is the solo project of Maryn Jones (who sings in All Dogs and has collaborated with Saintseneca and Radiator Hospital), and she’s releasing her new album Black Dog In My Path on October 12 via Double Double Whammy. The album was produced by Kyle Gilbride (of the back-in-action Swearin’), and lead single “WTFK” has a more rickety lo-fi pop vibe than Yowler’s singer/songwriter-ish debut had. If you’re in NYC, catch her opening the Tomberlin show at Union Pool on Tuesday, 8/14 (good pairing).

COLLEEN GREEN – “LET GO”
Colleen Green released a six-song cassette on Infinity Cat back in 2016 and it’s now getting a vinyl version, with rerecorded versions of the tape’s songs on Side A, and four new songs on Side B. You can check out one of those new ones, “Let Go,” right now. Colleen really has a way with punky pop and the “oh oh oh” chorus here is just great.

REASON – “THE SOUL”
We first heard Reason with his show-stopping verse on “Seasons” off Kendrick Lamar & TDE’s Black Panter album, and then he was announced to open longtime TDE artist Jay Rock’s tour, so it may not surprise you to learn the news that TDE signed him too. His first release for the label is the new single, “The Soul,” which, like his “Seasons” verse, proves Reason is a ferocious MC that deserves your attention. The song doesn’t even have a chorus; just Reason non-stop rapping and dropping memorable punchline after memorable punchline.
LSD (SIA, DIPLO, LABRINTH) – “THUNDERCLOUDS”
Sia, Diplo, and Labrinth recently formed a supergroup called LSD, and they’re planning to release an album on Columbia. They’ve just released their third single, “Thunderclouds” (following “Genius” and “Audio”), and it’s the kind of bright, bombastic pop you may expect from a group with this resume.

NOTHING – “THE CARPENTER’S SON”
Nothing will release their third studio album Dance on the Blacktop on August 24, and this newest single from the record is a heavily atmospheric, 8-minute epic. It’s yet another shoegaze-inspired, dreamy offering from the band, and it’s a slow burner that’s certain to please many fans of the band’s past work.

RESTORATIONS – “NONBELIEVER”
Philly band Restorations are putting out their upcoming fourth LP LP5000 next month, and their latest single from the album is somewhat more nuanced than their previous single, the pounding rocker “The Red Door,” with noticeably personal lyrics.

MITSKI – “TWO SLOW DANCERS”
Mitski’s new album is out next week, and today she released a third single from it, which we wrote more about HERE.

FRED THOMAS – “HOUSE SHOW, LATE DECEMBER”
The eight-minute “House Show, Late December” is the second single off Fred Thomas’ new album, and we wrote more about it HERE.

JASON ANDERSON – “TOLL BOOTH” (DEMO)
Jason Anderson is working on a new album, but first he’s got a demo of the heartland rockin’ new song “Toll Booth,” which we wrote more about HERE.

OMB PEEZY – “MY DAWG”
Alabama rapper OMB Peezy made a mark last year with his very solid debut EP Humble Beginnings, and now he’s set to release his first full-length project, Loyalty Over Love, this Friday (8/10). Ahead of its release, he dropped a new song from it, the melancholic, auto-tune-heavy, sing-songy “My Dawg.” Talking about the new song, Peezy told XXL, “A lot of people in my life have died in 2018. I know that everyone loves somebody and they will feel this song.” Listen here.
