14 New Songs Out Today

The Dears
The Dears

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

AVEY TARE – “WAKE MY DOOR”

Animal Collective’s Avey Tare has released a new seven-and-a-half minute song, and all proceeds from the pay-what-you-want sales on Bandcamp will go towards Sweet Relief, “supporting musicians during this crisis.” It’s a bouncy, synthy psych-pop song that sounds a little like the Merriweather Post Pavilion era, and it’s always nice to hear Avey do this kinda thing.

BEST EX – “GAP TOOTH (ON MY MIND)” & “BAD LOVE”

Indie-pop punks Candy Hearts changed their name to Best Ex in 2017, and they’ve been changing their sound to something a little more synthpoppy too. You can very much hear that on these two songs off their upcoming EP Good At Feeling Bad, due May 22 via No Sleep.

OWEN – “ME” (THE 1975 COVER)

Polyvinyl has released a new compilation, Stay Home, with previously unreleased music, demos, covers, and more from 16 artists on their roster and all proceeds going directly to the artists. There’s a lot of good stuff on there, but a major highlight is this Owen cover of The 1975’s “Me.” He sings it like he wrote it and really makes it sound like an Owen song.

YARD ACT (EX MENACE BEACH) – “THE TRAPPER’S PELTS”

For those who remember UK indie rock band Menace Beach, frontman Ryan Needham has a new band, Yard Act, who just released their first single. “The Trapper’s Pelts” will instantly make you think of The Fall with a bit of Happy Mondays shuffle in there as well.

EZRA FURMAN – TO THEM WE’LL ALWAYS BE FREAKS

If there’s a positive takeaway from COVID-19, one might be the amount of unreleased material artists have now been sharing with fans. Here are 26 tracks from Ezra Furman: “Welcome to a collection of malformed reject recordings, the unpolished refuse of the process of making our 2018 LP, Transangelic Exodus. I’m proud of the final version of the record, but I always yearned to let people glimpse some of the strange process of making it.”

FOXES IN FICTION – “DO WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO” (SARAH MCLACHLAN COVER)

Foxes in Fiction reworks Sarah McLachlan’s 1997 Surfacing ballad “Do What You Have to Do” into a dreamy electro-ballad dripping with distortion.

BATHS – “MIKAELA CORRIDOR”

Baths are releasing a second volume of Pop Music/False B-Sides on May 29 via the band’s own Basement Basement label. They’ve shared a track from it, the effervescent “Mikela Corridor.”

GREG FOX – “SOTAVIÑÑĀṆA”

This track from the ever-busy Greg Fox (Liturgy/Uniform/etc) comes from the same sessions as his forthcoming Contact (due May 29 via RVNG INTL) but this is a standalone for Adult Swim’s Singles series. As you might expect from a man known for drumming, “Sotaviññāṇa” is highly percussive, but it’s also highly electronic, eerie, and dark.

THE DEARS – “HEART OF AN ANIMAL”

“I’ve been trying to get ‘Heart Of An Animal’ on a Dears album for a very long time, but for whatever reason it just never fit,” says Dears frontman Murray Lightburn. “Now it kicks off and sets the overall tone of Lovers Rock. It was by far the most difficult song to sing for me, as it hits the very top of my range.” If you are a fan of the No Cities Left era of The Dears, this might be for you.

MICK HARVEY – “TURKISH THEME”

Former Bad Seeds member Mick Harvey will release a new album featuring two of his recent scores on April 17 via Mute. Specifically Sam Neil’s Waves of ANZAC and The Journey and “Turkish Theme” is from the former.

PUP’S STEFAN BABCOCK – “WAITING FOR SOMETHING TO HAPPEN”

PUP singer/guitarist Stefan Babcock released this new solo acoustic song in a quarantine performance video, joined remotely by PUP drummer Zack Mykula adding some electronic percussion from his sampler pad and Rachel O’Connor adding some french horn. Read more here.

CINDY LEE – “I DON’T WANT TO FALL IN LOVE AGAIN”

Cindy Lee‘s What’s Tonight To Eternity? is one of our favorite albums of the year so far, and Patrick Flegel is already back with a second Cindy Lee album of 2020.

THE BETHS – “DYING TO BELIEVE”

New Zealand’s The Beths have announced their sophomore album, Jump Rope Gazers, which will be out July 10 on Carpark. Here’s the terrific first single.

APHEX TWIN – “PERMEMORY100N PT 2”

One of six chilled-out tracks Aphex Twin just dropped.
