14 New Songs Out Today

Say Hi
Say Hi

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

THE FRONT BOTTOMS – “CAMOUFLAGE”

One day before their annual Champagne Jam holiday show, The Front Bottoms have released a new single. It’s kinda cut from a similar cloth as Talon of the Hawk, which you might say is one of the 100 best punk/emo albums of the decade. TFB also say a new album is expected next year.

WILLIE NELSON, MICAH AND LUKAS NELSON, DHANI HARRISON, JAKOB DYLAN, AND AMOS LEE – “FOR REAL” (TOM PETTY COVER)

Willie Nelson, his sons Micah and Lukas, as well as Dhani Harrison, Jakob Dylan and Amos Lee have collaborated on a cover of Tom Petty’s “For Rea.” Lukas Nelson, who fronts Promise of the Real, tells Rolling Stone, it’s “an anthem to the integrity of an artist’s journey summarized perfectly by the artist himself. It’s a reminder of why we live the art life, something needed more than ever as we enter a new decade of unknown misty twisty paths and crooked highways.” Proceeds from the track go to Midnight Mission homeless shelter.

MYKKI BLANCO – “LUCKY”

Mykki Blanco has shared a new live recording of “Lucky,” performed with a three-piece string section in London with producer FaltyDL on keyboards. It’s her first new original track since her debut LP, Mykki, came out in 2016, and about it, she says, “I was 26 when I started writing raps and making music. For a long time, I approached it like I would theatre or performance art – in this really cut and paste interdisciplinary way. And before diving into this new chapter of music I’ve been working on with FaltyDL, I had only ever worked with session players in the studio once. But now, my process has really grown and evolved to where live instrumentation is so central to the sounds I am creating. I am working with music director Nick Rosen on building out the band of musicians and vocalists for my new live stage show – he has helped enormously in taking electronic elements and translating them into live musical components performed by musicians. ‘Lucky’ is light-hearted with funny, tight punchlines and a heavy beat. I think the live string section for the intro and outro is just this very dramatic but delicate juxtaposition to what I’m saying in the song.”

HAUNT – “LIGHT THE BEACON”

Prolific NWOBHM revivalists Haunt are releasing another new album, Mind Freeze, on January 10 via Shadow Kingdom, and new single “Light the Beacon” is a real shredder.

FOO FIGHTERS – 00979725 EP (including a KILLING JOKE cover)

Foo Fighters have released another edition of their series of EPs that focus on a previous year of their career. This one’s 1997, and it includes The Colour and the Shape outtakes/rarities and a live 1997 cover of a song by Killing Joke (who Dave Grohl’s former band Nirvana famously, uh, borrowed a riff from once).

CALBOY – “PURPOSE” (ft. G HERBO)

Chicago sing-rapper Calboy has a new project coming in 2020, and he tapped G Herbo for its first single, “Purpose.”

MERCY UNION – “TOTEM” & “INFRARED”

Scandals/Gaslight Anthem offshoot Mercy Union have followed their 2018 debut album The Quarry with two more doses of raggedy heartland punk, “Totem” and “Infrared.”
