14 New Songs Out Today

BOSSE-DE-NAGE – “MY SHROUD”

San Francisco post-black-metal band Bosse-de-Nage are releasing their fifth album, Further Still, on September 14 via The Flenser, and today our metal sister site Invisible Oranges premiered second single “My Shroud,” alongside an in-depth interview. It’s got the perfect mix of atmosphere and aggression, and it’s keeping hopes high for Further Still. It follows lead single “Crux,” which you can stream here.

THRICE – “ONLY US”

In our recent Thrice feature, we mentioned that the opening track off their upcoming album Palms went into industrial-synth territory, and that track is now here. It’s called “Only Us,” and it’s pretty different for Thrice (in a good way), but still makes room for sludgy riffs and other more “classic” Thrice elements too.

GHOSTFACE KILLAH – “SAIGON VELOUR” (ft. SNOOP DOGG, E-40 & LA THE DARKMAN)

Wu-Tang Clan member and rap legend in his own right, Ghostface Killah will return with new album The Lost Tapes on October 5. He made the whole album with producer Big Ghost, and “the collective goal was to bring fans back to the Ironman/Supreme Clientele/Cuban Linx era sound.” You can get a taste of the album’s throwback vibes from lead single “Saigon Velour,” which features Snoop Dogg, E-40, and LA The Darkman. More album info here.

IRON & WINE – “WAVES OF GALVESTON”

Sam Beam has shared another song of the upcoming Iron & Wine EP, Weed Garden. Having first seen the light of day as part of the AV Club’s “State Songs” series, “Waves of Galveston” evokes the relaxed vibe of the Texas coastal town where Beam lived for a while. The song feels like late summer when shadows are long and nights are cool.

MOUNT EERIE – “SORIA MORIA (live)”

Mount Eerie announced a new live album, (after), recorded at Le Guess Who? festival in November of 2017. Writing about touring the powerful, painful material of A Crow Looked At Me, which deals with the loss of his first wife, Geneviève Elverum, to cancer, Phil Elverum called the shows “the most powerful” of his life, “no question,” with Le Guess Who? being “the best one.” He’s shared this haunting version of Crow track “Soria Moria” from that show.

IDLES – “GREAT”

Shouty, excitable UK punks IDLES’ new album, Joy As an Act of Resistance, is out at the end of the month and here’s the new single, “Great.” It’s a pro-immigration, anti-Brexit/Trump protest anthem with such lines as “Islam didn’t eat your hamster/change isn’t a crime.” Check out the video:

STEFFLON DON – “LIL BITCH”

British rapper/singer Stefflon Don continues to rise up in the world (she was named an XXL Freshman this year), and following a contribution to Drake’s new album, she’s set to release her own new full-length project, Secure, which is her first release since signing to Quality Control. Secure features appearances by Future, DJ Khaled, Sean Paul, Popcaan, and others, and it opens with Don’s ferocious new song “Lil Bitch.” That follows recent singles “Senseless” and “Pretty Girl.”

HATE ETERNAL – “WHAT LIES BEYOND”

After announcing a tour with Cannibal Corpse and Harms Way, Florida death metal vets Hate Eternal have announced a new album, Upon Desolate Sands, due October 26 via Season of Mist. The album was produced by the band’s own Erik Rutan, and its lead single is “What Lies Beyond,” which nails a fine balance of intricate guitar work and body-slamming death metal brutality.

THE FIELD – “WHO GOES THERE?”

Axel Willner is back with Infinite Moment, his new album as The Field, which is out September 21 via Kompakt. “Stepping outside of the studio opened up fresh perspectives on the creation of new music,” says Willner of the two-year break between albums, “Who Goes There?” is slinky and more than a little disquieting, with a bassline that sounds like a rubber ball bouncing endlessly inside an infinite steel tube.

SAVAK – “DEAD DICK”

SAVAK’s upcoming third album, Beg Your Pardon, has some of their most immediate songs to date, including slash-n-burn album opener “Dead Dick” which we wrote about HERE.

YOUNG JESUS – “DETERRITORY”

LA-via-Chicago indie rockers Young Jesus announced their first album since signing to Saddle Creek and released the lead single, which we wrote more about HERE.

IAN SWEET – “HIDING”

Hardly Art-signed indie rockers Ian Sweet announced a new album and shared lead single “Hiding.” More info HERE.

RINA SAWAYAMA – “CHERRY”

London via Japan pop artist Rina Sawayama released her debut mini album in 2017, and she’s been following it up with a couple of new singles. The latest one of those, “Cherry,” came out today. It’s full of sugary vibes straight out of ’90s R&B or a Mariah Carey song, but modernized, and with a twist. “I’ve always written songs about girls. I don’t think I’ve ever mentioned a guy in my songs, and that’s why I wanted to talk about it,” Rina said about “Cherry.” “For me there’s still a lack of representation. I just think the reason why I wasn’t so comfortable with my sexuality was because there was no one on TV or anywhere that I could point at and go,”Look mum! This person is what I was talking about!”

PETROL GIRLS – “SISTER”
Feminist post-hardcore Londoners Petrol Girls follow up their 2016 album Talk of Violence with a new EP, The Future Is Dark, out on September 14. “Sister” is the second song on the new EP, and it’s an alternately melodic and brutal take on the power of sisterhood. “I’ve been wanting for us to write a song about sisterhood for a long time,” singer Ren Aldridge explains, “because it’s these relationships that have had the biggest impact on my life and that form the heart of my feminism.”
