15 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

THOM YORKE – “HANDS OFF THE ANTARCTIC”

While his Suspiria score will be out next week, Thom Yorke has offered up a new, unrelated instrumental, “Hands Off the Antarctic,’ which is being released in partnership with Greenpeace. “There are some places on this planet that are meant to stay raw and wild and not destroyed by humanity’s footprint,” said Yorke in a statement. “This track is about stopping the relentless march of those heavy footsteps. The Antarctic is a true wilderness and what happens there affects us all. That’s why we should protect it.” Watch the song’s video which is made with footage shot from the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise.

J MASCIS – “WEB SO DENSE”

Dinosaur Jr frontman J Mascis has shared another single off his upcoming solo album Elastic Days (due 11/9 via Sub Pop). Compared to the two folky singles he previously released, “Web So Dense” is more of a rock ballad (but in that scrappy, trademark J Mascis way). It’s cool stuff.

JULIANA HATFIELD – “IT’S SO WEIRD”

“I often feel cut-off from other people, from my feelings, from technology, from popular culture,” says the former Blake Babies leader whose new LP is out in January. “I feel weird, I feel like I’m dreaming my life and that I am going to wake up some day.”

ANTARCTIGO VESPUCCI (JEFF ROSENSTOCK + CHRIS FARREN) – “FREAKIN’ U OUT”

Jeff Rosenstock and Chris Farren’s collaborative project Antarctigo Vespucci have shared another single from their upcoming Love In The Time of E-Mail (due 10/26 via Polyvinyl), and it’s exactly the kind of instantly-loveable, punky power pop rager you’d expect from these two.

JAMILA WOODS – “GIOVANNI”

Chicago neo-soul singer Jamila Woods follows her great 2016 debut HEAVN with a new song “Giovanni.” It’s great stuff, and proves Jamila is only getting better. It also comes as part of a nine-minute short film directed by Jamila. “‘Giovanni’ is a song about owning & celebrating all the parts of myself. It’s about legacy and lineage, and how the love & strength of the people who made me makes me feel invincible,” Jamila says.

SAVES THE DAY – “SIDE BY SIDE”

Saves the Day dropped another single off their upcoming ninth album 9 (due 10/26 via Equal Vision), and this one’s more of a gritty alt-rocker than the previous two.

MR. TWIN SISTER – “ALIEN FM”

Opening with a sultry sax line, Mr. Twin Sister’s “Alien FM” instantly pulls you into a lush, jazzy world with shades of Sade where love is a transmission and signals get crossed. Their new album, Salt, is out October 25.

ANGELO DE AUGUSTINE – “TIME”

Angelo De Augustine announced a new album, Tomb, due out January 18 via Sufjan Stevens’ Asthmatic Kitty records. Sufjan appears in the live video for first single “Time,” too, playing piano while incense burns. Thomas Bartlett aka Doveman produced Tomb, which Angelo says was born from his first true heartbreak; the album, he says, “is at its core a prayer for hope and clarity, and a prayer for love.”

KELLY MORAN – “IN PARALLEL”

Composer, producer and keyboardist Kelly Moran will release Ultraviolet on November 2. It will be her first album for Warp. Get a taste with the beautiful, ambient-leaning “In Parallel” which comes with this hypnotic video:

LISA/LIZA – “THE MATADOR PT. 2”

Maine-based musician Lisa/Liza is releasing her sophomore album, Momentary Glance, on November 30 via Orindal Records, and she’s shared the first single, the quiet, melancholy “The Matador Pt. 2.” Listen via Stereogum.

ESPERANZA SPALDING – “READYING TO RISE”

Esperanza Spalding has shared the tenth song off her twelve-song 12 Little Spells project, which we wrote more about here.

NENEH CHERRY – “SYNCHRONISED DEVOTION”

“Synchronised Devotion” is the latest single off Neneh Cherry’s new Four Tet-produced album, which comes out this week. We wrote more about it here.

TY SEGALL – “CLASS WAR” (THE DILS COVER)

Ty Segall slows down this L.A. punk classic which gets the approval of The Dils’ Chip Kinman: “Ty Segall answers questions that Tony and I never even thought to ask with his version of ‘Class War.’ I LOVE it!” Ty’s all-covers album is out soon — read more HERE.

THIS WILL DESTROY YOU – NEW OTHERS PART TWO

This Will Destroy You surprise-released their second album of 2018.

YANN TIERSEN – “TEMPELHOF”

The first single off Yann Tiersen’s upcoming album All, “Tempelhof” features field recordings from a Berlin airport. Read more HERE.
