The Hold Steady

15 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

THE HOLD STEADY – “THE LAST TIME THAT SHE TALKED TO ME”

The Hold Steady haven’t released a new album in a while, and they’ve instead been dropping one-off singles every few months. They’re back now with their first new single of 2019, the sax-fueled boogie heartland rock of “The Last Time That She Talked To Me,” which they debuted live at Brooklyn Bowl this past November. Their London Weekender is this weekend, and they’ve got Northeast US shows in May.

KARI FAUX – CRY 4 HELP (EP STREAM)

Little Rock, Arkansas rapper/singer Kari Faux is releasing the five-song Cry 4 Help EP this Friday and the whole thing is streaming now. Her breakout song was a banger, but Cry 4 Help sees her going more for a laid-back, soulful vibe it and suits her well. The one feature comes from Curren$y, who’s the perfect fit for this kind of music. You can stream the whole thing on NPR and see the video for “Leave Me Alone” below.

KARL KUEHN (OF MUSEUM MOUTH) – “XO” (BEYONCE COVER)

Museum Mouth singer (and Say Anything contributor) Karl Kuehn has uploaded a lo-fi, indie rock cover of Beyonce’s “XO” to his SoundCloud. It’s Beyonce like you’ve never heard before, and it’s pretty awesome.

TROPICAL FUCK STORM – “THE PLANET OF STRAW MEN”

Australian band Tropical Fuck Storm, which includes members of The Drones, will release “Planet of the Straw Me” on May 3 via Joyful Noise, and will be their first new material since their 2018 debut, A Laughing Death in Meatspace. (In Australia, it’s out via King Gizzard’s Flightless and will be their first release for the label.) It’s limited to 500 copies on orange vinyl and the b-side is a cover of Missy Elliott’s “Can’t Stop.” Like most of their material, there’s a seething anger burning through this one and you can watch the video below.

IBIBIO SOUND MACHINE – “GUESS I FOUND A WAY”

Genre-defying UK funk collective Ibibio Sound Machine have shared “Guess I Found a Way” from their upcoming Doko Mien, which is out March 22 via Merge. “It’s a song about trying to speak to people in words that no-one understands, conveying your feeling with just the music which is what we try to do in many of our songs,” says the group’s Eno Williams. It’s a lush, slow jam that wants you to float away with it.

SALAAM REMI – “ROLL THE DICE” (ft. GALLANT)

Veteran hip hop producer Salaam Remi has shared another single from his upcoming Do It For the Culture 2 compilation. This one features gorgeously crooned lead vocals from R&B singer Gallant, and it’s yet another promising taste of this comp.

RAZORBUMPS – “FREAK BABY” & “TEACH ME SOMETHING NEW”

Denton, TX’s Razorbumps make post-punk with the emphasis on “punk,” and they’re one of the only bands of their kind on the Coachella lineup this year. If you’re headed out to the desert this year, don’t miss these guys, and even if you aren’t, checkout these two new ripping songs.

OCTAVIAN – “BET” (ft. SKEPTA, MICHAEL PHANTOM)

UK rapper Octavian has been on the rise and he’s been dropping new songs left and right lately. This one features fellow UK hip hop great Skepta, and it’s a moody banger that kinda finds the middle ground between UK grime and Atlanta trap.

CHRIS FORSYTH – “TOMORROW MIGHT AS WELL BE TODAY” AND “MYSTIC MOUNTAIN”

Guitarist Chris Forsyth will release new double album, All Time Present, on April 12 and he’s shared the opening two tracks off the record: jangly instrumental “Tomorrow Might as Well Be Today” and the jamming “Mystic Mountain,” which is the only song on the album Chris sings on.

DEHD – “LUCKY”

Chicago trio Dehd, which includes members of NE-HI and Lala Lala will release their second album, Water, via Fire Talk on May 10. The First single is a twangy/surfy number titled “Lucky” that comes with a low-key wigged-out video.

SOUNDWALK COLLECTIVE W/PATTI SMITH – “THE NEW REVELATIONS OF BEING”

The Soundwalk Collective and Patti Smith shared a new single off The Peyote Dance, due out May 31 via Bella Union. It’s the first part of The Perfect Vision, an upcoming three-album project inspired by three French poets.

STRAY CATS – “CAT FIGHT (OVER A DOG LIKE ME)”

Eighties rockabilly hitmakers Stray Cats are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year and are gonna release their first album since the early ’90s as part of of it. Learn more here.

THE MOUNTAIN GOATS – “CADAVER SNIFFING DOG’

The Mountain Goats‘ new album In League with Dragons is out April 26 and they’ve just shared a new song from it, an upbeat, jazzy, string-filled number called “Cadaver Sniffing Dog.” Owen Pallett did the string arrangements and John Darnielle says he wrote the song on Christmas Day, 2017, “which probably tells you more about me than the song itself could ever hope to,” says John Darnielle.
