15 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

TIERRA WHACK – “WASTELAND”

Tierra Whack, who is one of the artists we’re excited to see at SXSW, has continued her trend of dropping a new single a week. “Wasteland” sees her honing her melodic, sing-rapping side, and it’s catchy stuff.

CYKADA – “OPHELIA’S MESSAGE”

London jazz group Cykada share members with Ezra Collective, Maisha, Myriad Forest, and more, and they’re releasing their self-titled debut album on March 22 via Astigmatic Records. The latest single is “Ophelia’s Message,” which should definitely appeal to fans of Ezra Collective and their ilk but which also has a strong psychedelic rock vibe, with lots of distorted guitar freakouts. It’s cool, trippy stuff.

VANISHING TWIN – “KRK (AT HOME IN STRANGE PLACES)”

Arty, abstract UK act Vanishing Twin — who mix jazz, pop, soundtrack music, psych, prog and more into a unique, organic sound — will release The Age Of Immunology on June 7 via Fire. They’ve just shared the album’s opening cut, “KRK (At Home In Strange Places),” which might have some thinking of Talk Talk’s final two albums.

DRAHLA – “STIMULUS FOR LIVING”

UK post-punk inspired group Drahla will release their debut album, Useless Coordinates, on May 3 via Captured Tracks. Based out of Leeds, the group seem like sonic and theoretical descendents of that city’s Gang of Four, with slashing guitars and sociopolitical lyrics. You can check out the video for single “Stimulus,” which is as much a short film as it is a promotional clip for the band.

JOAN AS POLICE WOMAN – “WHAT A WORLD”

Singer, songwriter and in-demand violinist, Joan Wasser is releasing a career-spanning compilation, Joanthology, out May 24 via Play it Again Sam, including a deluxe three-disc version that includes a Live At the BBC concert. There are also two new recordings: a cover of Prince’s “Kiss” and original song, “What a World,” which Joan says she wrote a while back but only played live a few times. “Over the years, I continued to get asked about ‘What A World’, so I rewrote and recorded it this year,” Joan says. “I combined the initial wild spark with the clarity of years of waves crashing on the shore. Pain and joy. Longing and equanimity. Infinite questions surrounded by endless movement. I’m looking forward to finally sharing it with the world.”

DYLAN LEBLANC – “RENEGADE”

Shreveport, Louisiana singer/songwriter Dylan LeBlanc is releasing a new Dave Cobb-produced album, Renegade, on June 7 via ATO, and the title track is streaming now. “I wanted to write the same type of songs that matched the atmosphere the band and I were bringing live. So, I started with ‘Renegade,’ which was fitting since I felt myself going in a new, more intense direction with this record. In the studio, I let go almost absolutely and let Dave Cobb do his work. It was a different experience for me—how focused Cobb was and how quickly we would get live takes down. Mostly in one or two takes. Never more than three. It left me spinning at how quickly it all came together. Over the course of ten days Renegade was complete and ready for mastering. And I couldn’t be more excited to share it with you,” Dylan says.

CHARLIE CUNNINGHAM – “SINK IN”

UK indie folk singer Charlie Cunningham teamed with three members of the now-defunct UK band The Maccabees for his new single “Sink In,” which we wrote more about here.

MARISSA NADLER & STEPHEN BRODSKY – “FOR THE SUN”

Marissa Nadler and Stephen Brodsky (Cave In, Mutoid Man) met in 2014 when Brodsky attended one of Nadler’s shows at Brooklyn’s Saint Vitus, hit it off immediately and began talking about making a record that didn’t exactly fit in either of their respective wheelhouses. Flash forward five years and we have Droneflower, their collaborative album which will be out April 26 via Sacred Bones. Learn more here.

NOVARUPTA – “MARE TRANQUILITATIS”

Swedish sludge band Novarupta are releasing their new album Disillusioned Fire in April, and we wrote more about new single “Mare Tranquillitatis” here.

BARS OF GOLD – “$20”

“$20” is the second single off Bear vs Shark offshoot Bars of Gold’s upcoming album SHELTERS, and we wrote more about it here.

YOUNGHUSBAND – “TRANSLATION”

It’s been four years, but UK band Younghusband are finally set to release the follow-up to 2015’s great Dissolver. The new album’s called Swimmers and this is the lovely first single.

BRAINSTORY – “DEAD END”

Rialto, CA psychedelic soul trio Brainstory are gearing up to release their Leon Michels-produced debut album on Big Crown Records, and we wrote more about new single “Dead End” here.

DEAD BARS – “I’M A REGULAR”

Seattle punks Dead Bars’ new song “I’m A Regular” was produced by grunge legend Jack Endino, and it mixes sludgy guitars and power pop melodies in a way that Weezer or Dinosaur Jr fans will probably dig. They’re opening for The Bouncing Souls in NJ this weekend, and you can read more and see all tour dates here.

DANIEL NORGREN – “LET LOVE RUN THE GAME”

Swedish indie folk singer Daniel Norgren is releasing his new album Wooh Dang in April, and we wrote more about new single “Let Love Run The Game” here.

KIRIN J CALLINAN – “THE WHOLE OF THE MOON” (WATERBOYS COVER)

Kirin J Callinan is back with his first music in two years, a cover of The Waterboys’ classic “The Whole of the Moon.” He doesn’t stray to far from the anthemic ’80s-ness of the original, but there’s also no question who’s doing this version.
