15 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

THE FRONT BOTTOMS – “JUST STAY” (KEVIN DEVINE COVER)

The final edition of the second volume of Kevin Devine’s Devinyl Split series will feature Kevin’s pals/collaborators The Front Bottoms, and it’s due out March 29 via Bad Timing Records. For it, TFB are covering Kevin’s 2006 classic “Just Stay” (from Put Your Ghost To Rest) and Kevin are covering TFB’s “Rhode Island” (from their 2011 self-titled album), and both perform on each other’s covers. TFB’s cover of “Just Stay” is out now, and it sounds pretty great. It’s also cool to hear Kevin taking the backup vocalist role for a song he wrote. Check it out below and catch Kevin’s Celtic alter-ego Kenny O’Brien and the O’Douls at their BrooklynVegan-presented St. Patrick’s Day shows this weekend.

FRANKIE COSMOS – “DANCING” / “TUNNEL”

Frankie Cosmos (aka Greta Kline) has announced the release of Haunted Items, a digital-only series of new songs featuring stripped-down, piano-based arrangements. “I had some of these songs stuck inside me, mostly because I wrote a lot of them for piano and didn’t know how to record them, even as demos,” Greta says. “This winter felt like the perfect opportunity to get these out of my system.” New songs from the collection will be released weekly, and this week’s songs “Dancing” and “Tunnel” are very brief, yet the sparse arrangements place a spotlight on the dark, emotional lyrics.

LYDIA AINSWORTH – “TELL ME I EXIST”

Toronto-based songwriter/composer Lydia Ainsworth’s new LP Phantom Forest isn’t out until May, but for now she’s shared the album’s second single, which continues the synthetic direction of “Can You Find Her Place,” here featuring a trap beat and pulsating rhythm, complete with strings.

CLINT MANSELL – “OUT OF THE BLUE”

Acclaimed composer (and former Pop Will Eat Itself frontman) Clint Mansell has scored Carol Morley’s new drama Out of the Blue which stars Patricia Clarkson (Sharp Objects) and is out next week in theaters and VOD. The score is out this week but you can get an early taste via the track “Astral Blues” — Clint says the title was inspired by Everything But the Girl’s Ben Watt.

DEAD TO A DYING WORLD – “EMPTY HANDS, HOLLOW HYMNS”

Dallas blackened doomers Dead To A Dying World are releasing their new album Elegy on April 19 via Profound Lore. Their new single “Empty Hands, Hollow Hymns” premiered at Invisible Oranges, along with an interview. Read more over at IO.

GAAHLS WYRD – “GHOSTS INVITED” & “FROM THE SPEAR”

The infamous black metal veteran Gaahl (Gorgoroth, Wardruna) is releasing the album GastiR – Ghosts Invited with his Gaahls WYRD project on May 31 via Season of Mist, and two songs are out from it now. The title track shows off his gothy, epic howl, while “From the Spear” is faster, heavier, and growlier.

YBN ALMIGHTY JAY – “LET ME BREATHE”

As you may have heard, YBN Almighty Jay is in recovery after getting stabbed and jumped in NYC this past Friday. It’s scary stuff, but Jay is moving forward and has responded with this song, which is also the lead single from his debut project Legend, “coming soon” via ART@WAR / Atlantic.

NEGATIVE GEMINI – “DIFFERENT COLOR HAIR”

Negative Gemini, aka singer, songwriter, and producer Lindsey French, is back with this hazy new track via the Adult Swim Singles series. She’s drawn comparisons to everyone from Hope Sandoval to Gwen Stefani, and you can probably glean a little of both from “Different Color Hair.”

TWIN SHADOW – “TRULY”

George Lewis will release his next Twin Shadow album on August 28 via his own Cheree Cheree label. While further details haven’t been shared, he has offered up this new reggaeton-inspired single. “In Love, so many of us are nostalgists, longing for the feelings of the first experiences the first touch, the first site of joyful tears,” says George. “Marked by our history, we sometimes fall into the trap of wanting to recreate these feelings, wanting to be the first ‘everything’ for someone else.”

CJ RAMONE – “BLUE SKIES”

CJ Ramone (Ramones bassist from 1989 to 1996) is releasing his new album The Holy Spell… on May 10 via Fat Wreck Chords, and the first single is “Blue Skies,” which sees CJ staying true to the style of his former band. You pretty much know what to expect, and it’s as catchy and punchy as you’d hope.

GIRL IN RED – “I NEED TO BE ALONE”

“I need to be alone or I’m gonna lose my shit” is a sentiment most of us can relate with and Norwegian artist Girl in Red (real name: Marie Ulven) puts that at the center of this catchy, winsome indiepop single.

JADE BIRD – “MY MOTTO”

Jade Bird will release her debut album in April and she’s just shared another track from it, the anthemic ballad “My Motto.”

MARTYRDOD – “CASHLESS SOCIETY”

Martyrdod have finally revealed details on their new album Haxhammaren and released the first single, “Cashless Society,” which is a little thicker and sludgier than Martyrdod have sounded in a while. The band says, “This track came about from riffs that spoke ‘käng.’ The result is way more metal than expected which made us really excited. Play it loud!” Indeed. Read more here.
