16 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

TRENTEMOLLER – “SLEEPER”

Danish producer Trentemøller is back with a new single, and “Sleeper” is an appropriate title. Ambient would be the wrong word for a track like this with throbbing, arpeggiated synth lines, but it’s also not one of his dancefloor bangers either.

CLAIRO – “BAGS”

Rising bedroom pop artist Clairo announced her debut LP Immunity, due out August 2 via FADER label. Rostam Batmanglij co-produced the album and his touch is evident on first single “Bags,” Clairo’s best sounding song yet.

$UICIDEBOY$ & TRAVIS BARKER – LIVE FAST DIE WHENEVER (EP STREAM)

New Orleans rap duo $uicideboy$ already toe the line between rock and hip hop (Trash Talk and Turnstile are among the acts on their upcoming tour), and now they’ve taken that a step further by releasing an entire collaborative EP with blink-182 drummer Travis Barker (who has his own history of rap/rock crossover including blink’s upcoming tour with Lil Wayne).

PROTO IDIOT – “FIND YOU FOR THEMSELVES”

Manchester trio Proto Idiot have been around for a decade or so, making garage punk that owes a little to first-gen British invasion, ’70s power pop and the artier side of British punk. This is the first single from their new album.

LETTUCE – “EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD”

Long-running funk band Lettuce release their sixth album, and first in three years, Elevate, on June 14. They’ve shared another new single, a very groovy take on the Tears for Fears classic.

IDK – “DIGITAL”

Rising Maryland rapper IDK (formerly Jay IDK) is preparing to release Is He Real later this year, and “Digital” is that album’s first single.

HALO MAUD – “FRED” (GREG SAUNIER REMIX)

Halo Maude’s “Fred,” one of the quieter songs from her 2018 debut, Je Suis Une île, has just been made a little louder by Deerhoof drummer Greg Saunier. He turns it into something more danceable but also weirder.

IMMORTAL BIRD – “VESTIGIAL WARNINGS”

Chicago’s Immortal Bird release their sophomore album (and first for 20 Buck Spin) on July 5. Following first single “Anger Breeds Contempt” they’ve shared “Vestigial Warnings.” Vocalist Rae Amitay says, “This was the first full song we wrote together as our current configuration, and we’ve been playing it together for almost two years. Finally having it recorded and released feels like a significant step. Lyrically, this one is more ‘political’ than the rest of the material on the album. I’m not trying to be indirect by using metaphor, but I also don’t want to limit people’s perspective by being overt. With the ‘eyeless, glowing grubs…sickly white, dying still…choir of weakened gasping…,’ I’m not saying that I was thinking about certain people who occupy positions of power in this country but… Actually, that is what I’m saying. ‘They’ll tell you this is how it has to be. Abandon hope and worship apathy.'”

YG – “STOP SNITCHIN” (REMIX FT. DABABY)

YG’s new album 4REAL 4REAL is out today, and, among other things, it includes a recording of YG’s tribute to Nipsey Hussle from Nipsey’s memorial service, and a new remix of one of its best songs (and lead single), “Stop Snitchin,” now featuring a new verse from rising rapper DaBaby. DaBaby continues to prove he’s a rapper to watch, and he makes a good song even better.

IONNALEE – “REMEMBER THE FUTURE”

Swedish art pop musician Jonna Lee is releasing a new album as ionnalee, REMEMBER THE FUTURE, on May 31, and ahead of that she’s shared its sleek, synthy title track.

HONEYBLOOD – IN PLAIN SIGHT (ALBUM STREAM)

Now basically a solo project for Stina Tweeddale, Glasgow’s Honeyblood release their third album, In Plain Sight, which takes a punky attitude and flair for ’60s Phil Spector, to pop with some help from producer John Congleton.

ECHO IN THE CANYON SOUNDTRACK (LP STREAM)

The soundtrack to Andrew Slater’s documentary Echo in the Canyon, which takes a look at the birth of the Laurel Canyon music scene with bands like The Byrds, The Beach Boys, Buffalo Springfield, and The Mamas & the Papas, came out today, and we wrote more about it here.

GINESSE – “THE INBETWEEN”

Los Angeles artist Cait Fairbanks has appeared on soap series The Young and The Reckless since 2017, but she also makes music as Ginesse, most recently this airy single that recalls Imogen Heap. “This song was kind of a turning point for me as an artist,” she says. “We finished the song in only a few hours and it just felt right…I let go of my expectations for how the song should go and how my life was going at the moment and I started to feel very present and happier in general.”

STEVE LACY – APOLLO XXI (ALBUM STREAM)

Steve Lacy of neo-soul group The Internet, and who also made notable contributions to the new Vampire Weekend album, tweeted in April that he had two solo albums finished; here’s one of them, his solo debut.

BRACKET – TOO OLD TO DIE YOUNG (ALBUM STREAM)

California punk vets Bracket are making their return to Fat Wreck Chords with Too Old To Die Young, which we wrote more about here, and you can stream a week ahead of its release.

BLOCBOY JB – “MERCEDES”

Memphis rapper Blocboy JB has shared a new single, “Mercedes.” It comes just days after his new “Ric Flair” video, which was directed by Zach Hurth.
