16 New Songs Out Today
So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…
MODERN NATURE (ULTIMATE PAINTING / BEAK>) – “FOOTSTEPS”
Modern Nature, the new band from Jack Cooper (Ultimate Painting, Mazes) and Will Young (Beak>, Moon Gangs), will release their debut album later hits later this month, and they’ve just shared the video for the gently motoroik new single “Footsteps.” Directed by Jake McGowan, the video follows Jack as the camera flips over and over, changing scenes along the way. “One of the threads through the album is a journey from the chaos of the city to the sanctuary of the country, so we wanted to condense that idea down over the course of ‘Footsteps’ with the final scene being a baptism… washing everything away,” says Jack. “There were a few films that felt very present when writing the album, so there’s some references to Mike Leigh’s Naked, Withnail And I, Tales From A Hard City, Emily Lloyd in Wish You Were Here and The Rise And Fall Of Reginald Perrin.”

COLUMN (TWIN PEAKS / POST ANIMAL)- “II”
Chicago band Column is made up of Cadien James of Twin Peaks and all five current members of Post Animal (Dalton Allison, Jake Hirshland, Javi Reyes, Matt Williams, and Wes Toledo) who all live together in the same house. Their debut 7″ is out August 17 via Grand Jury and you can check out one side of the that, the very mellow, laid-back “II” right now.

RICK ROSS – “BIG TYME” (ft. SWIZZ BEATZ, prod. JUST BLAZE)
It should be no surprise that Rick Ross sounds like a million bucks over a triumphant Just Blaze beat.

AURA NOIR – “BELLIGERENT ‘TIL DEATH”
Photographer Peter Beste’s new photo book Defenders of the Faith: The Heavy Metal Photography of Peter Beste “documents the timeless and universal concept of fandom through the elevation of the battle vests, revering them beyond the sweaty bodies they adorn and the mosh pits they live in, to the status of religious artifact.” The book has a foreword by Biff Byford of Saxon and it comes out September 27 via Sacred Bones, along with a two-song 7″ with new music by Norwegian bands Black Magic and Aura Noir. The Aura Noir song is out now, and as you might expect from this band, it’s an awesome dose of thrashy black metal. You can read more about the book and pre-order it here.

JADEN SMITH – “AGAIN”
Jaden Smith’s new album ERYS comes out this Friday (7/5) via MSFTS Music/Roc Nation/Republic and it features Tyler the Creator, A$AP Rocky, Kid Cudi, and more. New single “Again” is out now.

ABBATH – OUTSTRIDER (ALBUM STREAM)
Abbath’s anticipated sophomore album comes out this Friday via Season of Mist, but the whole thing is streaming now. You can read more here.

MICK LEWIS & THE FINE PRINT – I THINK I HEAR YOUR VOICE (ALBUM STREAM)
NYC musician Mick Lewis makes guitar pop that pulls from a variety of style: breathlessly strummer guitars and hairpin turns of early dB’s to dreamier orch-pop influenced by Big Star and The Left Banke. He just released I Think I Hear Hour Voice which is well worth checking out.

CRIMSON MOON – “GODSPEED ANGEL OF DEATH” (ft. mems of ABSU & ARCHGOAT)
Scorpios Androctonus’ long-running black metal project Crimson Moon will release their fourth album Mors Vincit Omnia on August 30 via Debemur Morti Productions, and new single “Godspeed Angel of Death” features guest vocals by Lord Angelslayer of Archgoat and Proscriptor McGovern of Absu. “‘Godspeed – Angel Of Death’ is a hymn towards the Destroying Angel, with sword drawn and dripping with gall… The omnipresence of death in a sonic soundscape accompanied with the guest vocals of Lord Angelslayer (Archgoat) and Proscriptor McGovern (Absu) that grants the obolus to the listener to embark on the journey towards the underworld,” says Androctonus.

ALESSANDRO CORTINI – “AMORE AMARO”
Electronic musician and former Nine Inch Nails member Alessandro Cortini is releasing a new album, VOLUME MASSIMO, due out September 27 via Mute. It’s his first album for the label, and first single “AMORE AMARO” is heavy with creeping tension and menace.

“SAMURAI” (AKA REFUSED) – “CHIPPIN’ IN”
“Samurai” is a fake band from the upcoming video game Cyberpunk 2077 played in real life by Refused. The first song from the game is out now, and Refused also say, “As for new Refused… who knows, maybe that is coming sooner than you think!”

BROOKE CANDY – “XXXTC” (FEAT. CHARLI XCX & MALIIBU MIITCH)
Brooke Candy is releasing her debut album, SEXORCISM, later this year, and she’s shared another guest-filled, hypersexual single from it.

DREAMVILLE – “COSTA RICA” & “LAMBOTRUCK”
The Dreamville Records compilation comes out this Friday, and two more songs are streaming now. More details here.

MANEKA – “MY QUEEN” (ft. SPEEDY ORTIZ’S SADIE DUPUIS”
Maneka is Devin McKnight, who used to play guitar in Speedy Ortiz and Grass Is Green, and his new song features Speedy singer Sadie Dupuis on guest vocals. The song is also inspired by aliens, ancient Egypt, and dedicated to Tom Delonge. Read more here.

RIFFS FOR REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE
Riffs For Reproductive Justice is a new benefit compilation (with proceeds going to the National Network of Abortion Funds and the Yellowhammer Fund) featuring “new tracks, demos, covers, and other assorted goodies” by Thou, Emma Ruth Rundle, Racetraitor, Jucifer, Closet Witch, Dawn Ray’d, Hether Fortune, Elizabeth Colour Wheel, Planning for Burial, Svalbard, Stander, Redbait, False, Woe, Sunrot, Vile Creature, Ithaca, Immortal Bird, and more. THOU – “IN THE PINES” (LEADBELLY/NIRVANA COVER)
There’s a lot to dig into on Riffs For Reproductive Justice, but one we wanted to shine a little extra light on is Thou’s “In The Pines” (aka “Where Did You Sleep Last Night”) a cover of Nirvana’s version of Leadbelly’s version of the song. Thou have done a lot of great Nirvana covers, and this nine-minute, sludgy cover of what started as a traditional folk song is among their most interesting re-interpretations of that band’s music.
