16 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

BILLIE EILISH – “EVERYTHING I WANTED”

Since releasing her debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? earlier this year, Billie Eilish has pretty much seen the fastest rise any vaguely “alternative” artist has seen in a very long time. She has now kept the momentum going with new single “Everything I Wanted,” which — like much of her album — finds her in surprisingly dark, atmospheric territory for an artist this instantly popular.

OBONGJAYAR – “STILL SUN”

Fresh off appearing on the new Danny Brown album, Nigerian artist Obongjayar has announced his own new EP, Which Way Is Forward?, due February 7 via via September Recordings. Along with the announcement comes the groovy new single “Still Sun.”

NNAMDI – “PRICE WENT UP”

Nnamdi Ogbonnaya, who just goes by NNAMDI now, has released his first new song in two years, and it’s a cosmic, psychedelic rap song that comes with an equally trippy video. NNAMDI has a TBA new project due next year, and if the rest of it is anything like this song, it should be pretty great.

HAAI – SYSTEMS UP, WINDOWS DOWN (EP STREAM)

London-based, Australian-born DJ/producer HAAi has been making a name for herself with a slew of singles and her Coconut Beats parties/label, and now she has signed to Mute and surprise-released this EP as her label debut.

NEON INDIAN – “TOYOTA MAN”

It’s been five years since Neon Indian’s last album — he’s been dabbling in film since then — but things are stirring in his world now. He’s on tour as we speak (Brooklyn tonight), and he’s just shared this new single that has that familiar, nostalgic chillwave vibe, as well as a pretty cool video that he directed that stars a paper mache Donald Trump.

BECK – “EVERLASTING NOTHING”

Beck’s back next week with new album Hyperspace and here’s one more single before you can dig into the whole thing. “Everlasting Nothing,” which closes the album, is a dusty, widescreen ballad co-written by Pharrell (who also plays drums on the song).

NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS – “BLUE MOON RISING”

Noel Gallagher has been in EP mode lately, having dropped This Must Be the Place back in September, and he’s got another, titled Blue Moon Rising, slated for March. You don’t have to wait that long to get a taste as first single “Blue Moon Rising” is out now. Noel’s been dabbling in dance rock lately too, but this is more in the Beatlesque realm he’s best known for.

ROYCE DA 5’9″ – “BLACK SAVAGE” (ft. T.I., CYHI THE PRYNCE, WHITE GOLD, SY ARI DA KID)

Royce Da 5’9″ has put together a rock solid crew for this posse cut that was recorded for Jay-Z and the NFL’s non-profit organization Inspire Change. Royce produced the head-nodding song himself, and it’s a lyrical onslaught throughout.

LEECHED – “EARTH AND ASH”

Manchester, UK metallic hardcore trio Leeched are releasing their sophomore album, To Dull The Blades Of Your Abuse, on January 31 via Prosthetic, and the intense, jackhammering “Earth and Ash” is the first single.

CASPIAN – “FLOWERS OF LIGHT”

Massachusetts post-rockers Caspian announced their first album in over four years, and you can read more about the gorgeous lead single here.

MOSES SUMNEY – “VIRILE”

Moses Sumney has announced a new double album, and the first single is the excellent “Virile,” which comes with a video that marks Moses’ directorial debut. Read more about it here.

BLACKQUEEN – “FEED THE WORM”

San Francisco’s blackQueen were formed in 1998 by Pete Jay, bassist of defunct grind legends Assück (and also of Wormwood), and they released some demos, a split, and a mini-LP before taking a long break and returning for their first-ever full-length album in 2012. Now they’re set to release their third album, and you can read more about its new single “Feed The Worm” here.

…AND YOU WILL KNOW US BY THE TRAIL OF DEAD – “DON’T LOOK DOWN”

Trail of Dead are back after six years and will release their 10th album in January. “I feel like I’m writing pop music,” Keely says, “it’s just not Top 20 pop. It’s the pop music I wish was on the radio, the pop music I would’ve grown up with.” The first single, “Don’t Look Down,” is indeed pretty poppy and Keely directed, edited and produced its rotoscope-animation-style video.

OF MONTREAL – “PEACE TO ALL FREAKS”

Of Montreal will release new album UR FUN on January 17 via Polyvinyl. First single is “Peace to All the Freaks,” a bouncy, ’80s-style synthpop jam that Kevin Barnes calls a “protest song against totalitarianism, familial terrorism and wastefulness in all its forms.”

PET SHOP BOYS – “BURNING THE HEATHER”

Iconic synthpop duo Pet Shop Boys release their new album Hotspot in January. This new single features some nice acoustic guitar from formere Suede guitarist Bernard Butler.

THE REAGANOMICS – “GROWN ASS MAN”

“Hold onto your White Claws, Millennials, our new album is Ramones meets Dio meets middle age. We’re back and ready to rage, just have to be done by 9pm,” say The Reaganomics of their new album The Aging Punk. Read more about it here.
