16 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

FIELD MUSIC – “MONEY IS A MEMORY”

Field Music return with Making a New World in January — a concept album about the unintentional after-effects of the first World War. They’ve just shared “Money is a Memory,” a funky, proggy song with a lot on its mind. “The whole album is really about consequences, and how the consequences of that war are still with us,” says David Brewis. “‘Money Is A Memory’ is probably the most explicit example of that – decisions that were made a hundred years ago still casting a shadow. The initial premise is a bit comical – the admin assistant going through their bureaucratic duties – but buried away inside those papers you can imagine the echoes of millions of lives being turned upside down.”

BONNY LIGHT HORSEMAN – “JANE JANE”

Bonny Light Horseman — the new supergroup of Anais Mitchell, Eric D Johnson (Fruit Bats), and The National/Craig Finn/Hiss Golden Messenger collaborator Josh Kaufman — have shared another song off their upcoming debut album, and it’s an arrangement of the traditional “Jane Jane.” Anais says, “I grew up with ‘Children Go Where I Send Thee,’ we used to sing it at Christmastime. I’d never heard ‘Jane Jane’ ‘til Eric shared the Tia Blake version of it with us during (I think) our first band hang in Dumbo. I know ‘Jane Jane’ is also sometimes performed as a standalone song and I don’t know who the first person was to mash up the two tunes, but definitely Tia Blake and Peter, Paul & Mary performed it that way. That major/minor shift just never gets old to me, it gives me chills and makes me feel like laughing at the same time.”

PEGGY SUE – “VALIDATE ME”

UK group Peggy Sue have shared a second single from their upcoming album Vices which is out in February. “We were listening to a lot of Ramones, and female bands that borrow from them – like Colleen Green and Vivian Girls – and ‘Validate Me takes inspiration from the way they can combine sweet and vulnerable and seething and heavy all in one track.” Inspiration may have come from Joey, Johnny, and Dee Dee but the lightly twangy “Validate Me” is all Peggy Sue.

COLDPLAY – “DADDY” & “CHAMPION OF THE WORLD”

Coldplay’s new “more experimental” double album Everyday Life comes out this Friday (11/22), and today they put out two more songs from it: the tender piano ballad “Daddy” and the jangly, mid-tempo “Champion of the World,” which was co-written by the late Scott Hutchison of Frightened Rabbit.

Chris Martin says, “Scott had a song called ‘Los Angeles Be Kind,’ which I love. When I first heard it, I thought it was going to go one way; but it went another. Anyway ‘Champion Of The World’ is the song that came from following the other path, and that’s why Scott is a co-writer on this song. Today is also his birthday. So happy birthday Scott and thank you for your beautiful music, wherever you are.”

NATHAN GRAY OF BOYSETSFIRE – “WORKING TITLE” (ft. CHUCK RAGAN OF HOT WATER MUSIC)

Boystetsfire frontman Nathan Gray is releasing his sophomore solo album, Working Title, on January 31 via End Hits Records, and its just-released title track features backing vocals by another punk-frontmnan-turned-Americana-solo artist, Chuck Ragan. If you dig Chuck’s stuff (or Tim Barry’s solo stuff, or anything else in this realm), you probably will dig “Working Title” too.

BLOODLET – “ViPER IN HAND”

’90s-era metallic hardcore greats Bloodlet are releasing their first new music since 2002 in the form of the two-song “Viper In Hand” / “Choking on the Peat” single on December 20 via Translation Loss. You can hear the ass-kicking “Viper In Hand” over at Decibel.

NECROWRETCH – “LUCIFERIAN SOVRANTY”

French blackened death metallers Necrowretch will release their new album, The Ones From Hell, on February 14 via Season of Mist (very Valentine’s Day appropriate, obviously). The first single is “Luciferian Sovranty,” which is an adrenaline rush of pure filth.

EVE OWEN – “SHE SAYS”

Eve Owen sang on two songs on the new National album, and now she has released her own new single, produced by The National’s Aaron Dessner and released on Dessner and Justin Vernon’s 37d03d Records. It’s a gorgeous piano ballad, and it’s the first taste of Eve’s upcoming debut album.

BIG FREEDIA – “LOUDER” (FT. ICONA POP)

New Orleans bounce superstar and queen diva Big Freedia turns it up on her new single, which features electropop duo Icona Pop. “Louder is just that: I’m coming louder and stronger on all fronts this next year,” Freedia says.

MARIJANNAH – “1966”

Marijannah, the Singapore stoner metal band with members of Wormrot, The Caulfield Cult, and Abolition A.D., are releasing a new album called Istanah on December 6 via Cursed Tongue Records. The first single is called “1966,” and it includes the lyric “the year is one and god is done,” though with its thick, fuzzed-out riffs, it sounds more like the year is 1971.

WEAVES – “INTERNET TEARS”

Toronto band Weaves have returned with their first new music since their 2017 sophomore album Wide Open. They’ve shared “Internet Tears,” about which vocalist Jasmyn Burke says, “I was watching something on the Internet that made me cry and started thinking about how ridiculous and funny and peculiar it is that we can sit alone staring at a screen and feel such strong feelings of happiness or sadness or anger while just browsing. It’s like imposed feelings or something. Maybe you can relate.”

DRIVE-BY TRUCKERS – “ARMAGEDDON’S BACK IN TOWN”

Drive-By Truckers have announced their twelfth album The Unraveling and shared lead single “Armageddon’s Back In Town,” which you can read more about here.

RULE THEM ALL – “TEACHER”

Long Island hardcore up and comers Rule Them All are releasing their new Dreams About… EP on December 6 via Flatspot Records, and you can read more about new song “Teacher” here.

BEN WATT – “BALANCED ON A WIRE”

“My kids were teenagers leaving home for the first time when I wrote it,’ says Ben Watt of his new single from the upcoming Storm Damage. “I was moved by their mixture of anxiety and determination. It reminded me of being nineteen myself, standing on the edge of something new, how you cope, how you need to open up when the other half of you is screaming ‘no’. And I realised I still felt like that now sometimes. Perhaps that feeling never really leaves you.”

SQUAREPUSHER – “VORTRACK” (AND FRACTURE REMIX)

Tom Jenkinson will be back in 2020 with his first Squarepusher album in five years — this is the first single (the Fracture remix might be better if we’re being honest).
