16 New Songs Out Today

Bonnaroo 2018 - Saturday
Bon Iver at Bonnaroo 2018 (more by Kate Cauthen)

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

JUSTIN VERNON – “AGASTEEN”

Justin Vernon is about to release the debut Big Red Machine album (his collaborative project with Aaron Dessner) this week, but first, he released another one-off track for his and Dessner’s streaming platform PEOPLE. It’s a lengthy, ambient song and you can listen HERE.

TUNE-YARDS – “SWEET DREAMS (ARE MADE OF THIS)” (EURYTHMICS COVER)

Tune-Yards released one of the live “Spotify Singles,” and it includes the band taking on the classic Eurythmics track “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This).” The beginning of the cover sounds far bubblier than the original, but it begins to feel more familiar once the iconic synth melody kicks in. It’s a great cover that blends the best parts of the original with Tune-Yards’ more eccentric qualities.

PAUL SIMON – “RENE AND GEORGETTE MAGRITTE WITH THEIR DOG AFTER THE WAR”

Paul Simon is revisiting old songs for his new album, In The Blue Light. Following an orchestral take on “Can’t Run But”, he’s shared a second song he reworked with yMusic, “Rene and Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After the War,” originally from his 1983 album Hearts and Bones. The new version is delicate and airy, with the subtle instrumentation never overwhelming Paul’s voice.

RICHARD THOMPSON – “MY ROCK, MY ROPE”

“There are 13 songs on the record, and each one is like a river,” says folk and rock icon, Richard Thompson of his new LP, 13 Rivers. “Some flow faster than others. Some follow a slow and winding current. They all culminate on this one body of work.” On “My Rock, My Rope,” which finds a lovely midtempo current, Thompson sings about calling on someone in times of need. Thompson’s well-weathered voice does much of the heavy lifting.

ANEMONE – “DAFFODILS”

Having released her terrific Baby You & I EP earlier this year, Anemone (the musical nom de plume of Montreal artist Chloé Soldevila) is working on her debut LP which will be out via Luminelle Recordings and Royal Mountain Records. Details are scant, but Anemone has just shared the first single from the LP, “Daffodils,” which is another lovely, effervescent dose of dreampop.

BABYGIRL – “SOFT”

Toronto duo Babygirl will release their upcoming EP Lovers Fevers on Friday, and the band’s second offering from it is a subdued piece of guitar-laced dream pop, topped off with gentle drum machines and delicate vocals.

SINGLE MOTHERS – “SWITCH OFF”

After returning last year with the new album Our Pleasure (and after frontman Drew Thomson released a solo EP this year), Canadian punks Single Mothers are back with a standalone single, “Switch Off.” The track clocks in at less than a minute and a half, and it’s closer to breakneck-speed ’80s hardcore than Single Mothers have ever really come before. It rips.

PIG DESTROYER – “MT. SKULL”

Pig Destroyer’s anticipated new album Head Cage comes out next week (9/7) via Relapse, and they’ve now unleashed another track from it. Going by the singles, it’s been clear that this album (their first with a bassist), is a different, more dynamic LP for Pig Destroyer, and this new single is very strong, continued evidence of that.

NAO – “MAKE IT OUT ALIVE” (ft. SIR)

British alt-R&B artist Nao is planning to release a new album this year, and while most details on it are TBA, she just released a second new single. This one features TDE-signed singer SiR, and their voices sound excellent together over the song’s psychedelic, rhythmic production.

RED FANG – “LISTEN TO THE SIRENS” (TUBEWAY ARMY COVER)

Portland sludge band Red Fang have offered up a version of “Listen To The Sirens” by Gary Numan’s old band Tubeway Army. Some of their usual sludge attack is in the mix, but Red Fang tame their sound a bit for this one, keeping it a little more faithful to the original.

SHAD – “THE FOOL PT 3 (FRAME OF MIND”) (prod. KAYTRANDA)

Canadian indie rapper Shad is releasing his new album A Short Story About A War on October 26 via Secret City Records, and the second single is “The Fool Pt 3 (Frame Of Mind),” which sees Shad rapping over a trippy beat from fellow Canadian Kaytranada.

JADE BIRD – “WALK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN” (THE BANGLES COVER)

Rising UK-based, Americana inspired singer songwriter Jade Bird is working on her debut full length album, and she stopped by London’s Metropolis Studios to record a Spotify Single. Along with a new version of her single “Uh Huh,” she took on The Bangles’ “Walk Like An Egyptian,” giving it a raw, immediate feel with rougher edges than the original.

LAURA JANE GRACE & THE DEVOURING MOTHERS – “APOCALYPSE NOW (& LATER)”

Against Me! singer Laura Jane Grace released the first song off her debut solo album, which we wrote more about HERE.

LIARS – “MURDRUM”

Liars have shared the first single off Titles With The Word Fountain, a sequel of sorts to last year’s TFCF. Read more about that here.

MIRAH – “ORDINARY DAY”

We premiered the latest single off Mirah’s upcoming album, and wrote more about it HERE.

THE MOUNTAIN GOATS – “BLOOD BANK” (BON IVER COVER), “BRIDGE OF SIGHS” (ROBIN TROWER COVER), and “SAVE THE PEOPLE” (GODSPELL)

The Mountain Goats recorded an EP of covers, mostly in the style of their guitar-free most recent album, Goths, for Aquarium Drunkard’s The Lagniappe Sessions. Read more about them HERE.
