17 New Metal & Hardcore Songs Out This Week

We’ve completed another week in our current hell/reality, and luckily we have plenty of new heavy music to help get us through. I wrote about the new Testament and WVRM LPs over in Notable Releases, and you can also head to Invisible Oranges’ Upcoming Metal Releases to read more on the Unreqvited / Asunojokei split EP, Errant (Immortal Bird vocalist Rae Amity) EP, Night, Gnaw Their Tongues, and more. And keep reading this post for this week’s new singles from J Bannon’s new band Umbra Vitae, Cro-Mags, Ulver, Calligram, Pyrrhon, Daughters (Cramps cover), and more…

UMBRA VITAE (mem CONVERGE, etc) – “RETURN TO ZERO”

Umbra Vitae is a new death metal-inspired band fronted by Converge’s J Bannon that also features current and former members of Bannon’s other band Wear Your Wounds, Hatebreed, The Red Chord, Twitching Tongues, Job for a Cowboy, Uncle Acid, and more. Read more about their debut single here.

CRO-MAGS – “THE FINAL TEST”

Cro-Mags have announced their first new album in 20 years and released the lead single, which you can download and read more about here.

ULVER – “LITTLE BOY”

Black metal turned trip hop turn synthpop band Ulver have shared their second single off their upcoming TBA album, and this one’s very much on their synthpop side, with maybe a hint of Bowie in the mix too.

CALLIGRAM – “KENOSIS”

Here’s another song off UK black metallers Calligram’s upcoming album The Eye is the First Circle, which drops next week (4/10) via Prosthetic. Read more about the song, along with an interview with the band, at Invisible Oranges.

PYRRHON – “ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE”

NYC death metal oddballs Pyrrhon are releasing their new album Abscess Time on June 26 via Willowtip Records, and the first single is the chaotic “Another Day In Paradise.”

DAUGHTERS – “WHAT’S INSIDE A GIRL” (CRAMPS COVER)

Three One G’s upcoming Cramps tribute album includes this take on “What’s Inside A Girl” by Daughters. They stay pretty faithful to the original, but add in an extra jolt of energy, and it’s pretty great to hear Daughters taking on this song.

JESSE DRAXLER & DYLAN WALKER (FULL OF HELL) – “TIME REIGN CEMENT”

Visual artist Jesse Draxler (who’s designed art for Nine Inch Nails, Chelsea Wolfe, Zola Jesus, Daughters, and more) is releasing a new audiovisual album, Reigning Cement, featuring over 20 musicians, including Chelsea Wolfe, The Dillinger Escape Plan’s Greg Puciato, Ghostemane, Trentemøller, and Full of Hell’s Dylan Walker, who made this crackling noise track with Jesse.

NIGHT DEMON – “EMPIRES FALL” (ft. 1/2 of RANCID)

Night Demon have unleashed this new dose of old school heavy metal worship, and it features backing vocals by Rancid’s Lars Frederiksen & Matt Freeman, a pairing that kind of makes sense when you consider how ’90s punk the “whoa-ohs” in this song sound.

CHARGER (mem RANCID) – “STAY DOWN”

Speaking of Rancid and metal, Matt Freeman’s Motorhead-ish band Charger have a new 12″ single out with their November 2019 song “Watch Your Back” and the just-released “Stay Down.” Along with the usual Motorhead comparisons, you can hear a little sped-up Black Sabbath on “Stay Down” too.

KOOL KEITH & THETAN – “LET’S TAKE A TRIP”

Abstract rap legend Kool Keith and metal duo Thetan’s collaborative album Space Goretex comes out next week (4/10) and here’s another dark, mind-bending song from it.

SUGAR HIGH – “UGLY”

Sugar High is the new duo of Kris Esfandiari (of King Woman, Miserable, and NGHTCRWLR) and producer Darcy Baylis (who’s worked with Wicca Phase, Georgia Maq, and others), and heir debut album Love Addict is due April 28 via Dero Arcade. New single “Ugly” almost counts as a rap song, and Kris — who’s normally known for metal and shoegaze — pulls it off.

THE WAY BACK WITHIN (JESSE LEACH OF KILLSWITCH ENGAGE) – “THE PATH”

Killswitch Engage frontman Jesse Leach released this new eight and a half minute ambient song. He says he’s “been creating this type of music for the better part of 2 decades but very rarely share any of it,” but released this now to put out something calming during these crazy times. It is indeed very calming.

GREY DAZE (CHESTER BENNINGTON) – “SOMETIMES”

The late Chester Bennington’s pre-Linkin Park band Grey Daze pushed back the release of their album Amends — which is made up of newly-finished versions of songs the band wrote and recorded with Chester in the ’90s — to June 26 via Loma Vista, and its latest single is “Sometimes.” Like the previous singles, it’s kind of a trip to hear this, and this one comes with an especially heartbreaking video.

ZOUS (mem TWITCHING TONGUES, NAIL) – PANDEMICON EP

ZOUS is the new old school death metal-style project from Taylor Young of Twitching Tongues and Nails. Pandemicon is his fist EP, and it comes with an Autopsy cover and four originals that are right up that same alley.

FUSE – “THIS SEGREGATION WILL END”

Singapore hardcore newcomers Fuse are releasing their debut 12″ EP on Quality Control HQ this year, and here’s the scorching new track “This Segregation Will End.”

ON SIGHT – “CAUSE OF PAIN”

Here’s the title track off NJ metallic hardcore up and comers On Sight’s upcoming album, which you can read more about here.

BUGGY – DEMO

NJ hardcore band Buggy (who share members with Gel) dropped this new demo, which WAR Records will be releasing on cassette. It’s got four short, fast, raw originals and a Negative Approach cover. The whole thing’s over and done with in about five minutes and it rips.

BLACK CURSE – ENDLESS WOUND

Denver black/death metallers Black Curse — whose lineup includes members of Blood Incantation, Spectral Voice, Primitive Man, Khemmis, and more, all four of whom also play/played in Maliblis — dropped this Arthur Rizk-helmed LP, and it’s a beast.
