17 New Songs Out Today

The Streets Flohio
The Streets and Flohio

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

A$AP FERG – “FLOOR SEATS”

A$AP Ferg follows his three recent singles with “Floor Seats” and revealed that all four songs will appear on his new EP, also titled Floor Seats. Release date is still TBA, but going by how instantly enjoyable all of these songs have been, we recommend keeping your eyes peeled for it.

THE STREETS – “HOW LONG’S IT BEEN” (ft. FLOHIO)

Mike Skinner’s long-running UK hip hop project The Streets has tapped rising UK rapper Flohio for his new single, “How Long’s It Been.” The two sound great together, and Skinner says, “Flohio’s energy is insane. She adds colour to a quite serious trap energy and makes something just as unpredictable and homespun as anyone from Atlanta. She has the juice on stage.” The Streets are also planning to release a “collaborative mixtape” this year.

SAUL WILLIAMS – ENCRYPTED & VULNERABLE (ALBUM STREAM)

Saul Williams mixes hip hop, spoken word, experimental music, and more on his very appealing new album which dropped in full today.

MURS, 9TH WONDER & THE SOUL COUNCIL – “HIGH NOON” (ft. RAPSODY & REUBEN VINCENT)

Veteran underground rapper Murs and veteran producer 9th Wonder are teaming for a new album, The Iliad Is Dead and The Odyssey Is Over, due August 9 via EMPIRE. New single “High Noon” features one of today’s best rappers, frequent 9th Wonder collaborator Rapsody, as well as Reuben Vincent. Rapsody tells Complex, “Making ‘High Noon’ was one of the funniest times I’ve had working with another artist. It started as a Patagucci joke, and turned into a jam where Murs and I got to flex and have fun at the same time. I haven’t gone back and forth on verses in a while. It was dope to create in that way again– just spitting.” It’s as fun to listen to as it sounds like it was to make. Check it out:

THE COOL KIDS – LAYUPS (PROD. THE ALCHEMIST)

Long-running indie-rap duo The Cool Kids are back with a new three-song EP, and psychedelic production wizard The Alchemist produced the whole thing. It’s as daze-inducing as you’d hope.

Kate Tempest was in NYC this week, playing an intimate showcase at East Village club Berlin Under A but before stopping by Late Night With Seth Meyers to performing “Firesmoke” from the just-released The Book of Traps & Lessons. She’s an incredibly magnetic performer as this performances shows.

LOW – “FLY” (KING BRITT FHLOSTON PARADIGM REMIX)

Veteran Philadelphia producer/DJ King Britt has remixed Low’s “Fly” from last year’s great Double Negative. He takes the original into downtempo, jazzy territory. “As a longtime Low fan, a huge amount of respect went into the mix. I loved their new sonic direction, which spoke to my Fhloston Paradigm project,” says Britt. “My mix was a response and continuation in a way of a magical space they already created. Mimi Parker’s vocals were some of her best. A true honor.”

GONG GONG GONG – “Notes Underground 地下日記”

Beijing-based duo Gong Gong Gong will release their full-length debut, Phantom Rhythm 幽靈節奏, on October 4 via Wharf Cat. First single “Notes Underground” is minimalist, blues art-punk. “This was one of the first Gong Gong Gong songs we wrote, in 2015,” says the group’s Joshua Frank. “It kind of just emerged fully formed, before we even had a band name—things just clicked. One of the first times we played it live was in this underpass tunnel in Beijing.”

ANDREW COMBS – “SAVE SOMEBODY ELSE”

Andrew Combs has shared another single off his upcoming Sam Cohen-produced album Ideal Man, and compared to the fuzzed-out “Stars of Longing,” this one’s more of a breezy folk rocker.

VEX – “TIMEWORN”

Austin death metallers Vex are gearing up for a new album, and they’ve shared the new single “Timeworn.” Drummer Eoghan McCloskey says, “We chose ‘Timeworn’ as the first single because it’s emblematic of the direction we are taking on our new record. Proggy and atmospheric like our last album, but shorter songs with more streamlined, less indulgent arrangements.” That should give you a good idea of what to expect from this ass-kicking new song.

STEVE GUNN – MOTION PICTURES (FOR CARRIE) (NEIL YOUNG COVER)

Steve Gunn has covered Neil Young’s “Motion Pictures (For Carrie)” as part of the Amazon Originals Series. “‘Motion Pictures’ perfectly captures the wistful anxiety of ‘living in between’ the real world and being on the road,” says Steve. “Like Neil, I also find watching TV in hotel rooms inspiring.”
