18 New Metal Songs Out This Week

Cloak

It’s a pretty big week in the world of popular alt-metal, with a new Slipknot album (read my review) and the first single off the first Tool album in 13 years (listen below). This week also gave us new metal albums from Zombie Apocalypse, Destruction, Phobia, The Contortionist, and more. We also got new singles from Gatecreeper, Cloak, .gif from god, GosT, Life Of Agony, Profanatica, Cloud Rat, and more. Read on for all the metal (and metal adjacent) songs we posted on BV this week…

TOOL – “FEAR INOCULUM”

The first taste of Tool’s long-awaited album is finally here. What do you think?

CLOAK – “TEMPTER’S CALL”

Atlanta’s Cloak just wrapped up a tour with Khemmis and they’re gearing up for shows with 1349 and Black Tusk, and now they have finally announced a followup to their great debut album To Venomous Depths. It’s called The Burning Dawn and due October 25 via Season of Mist, and the first single is “Tempter’s Call.” Going by this song, it sounds like the band’s mix of arena rock and black metal has only sharpened since they released their debut — it’s seriously catchy, fist-pumping stuff, and it makes a few unexpected left turns. If you’re not familiar with Cloak but you like Tribulation, be sure not to sleep on this.

.GIF FROM GOD – “POSSIBLE FUTURES IN THE MINDS OF CHILDREN”

Rising hardcore/screamo/etc band .gif from god are releasing their anticipated sophomore album approximation_of_a_human on September 27 via Prosthetic, and the ripping new single “possible futures in the minds of children” is out now. The band penned a screed about the powerful message behind the song that you can read at Revolver. And as Revolver (and BrooklynVegan) contributor Fred Pessaro points out, some major pg.99 vibes on this one.

GOST – “WRAPPED IN WAX”

Synthwaver GosT is releasing his new album Valediction on October 4 via Century Media, and the latest single is “Wrapped In Wax,” which puts horror film scores, goth rock, industrial, and even a little black metal in a blender.

Brooklyn alt-metal vets Life Of Agony’s new album is a sequel to their classic 1993 debut River Runs Red, and the first single “Scars.” Read more about the album here.

PROFANATICA – “ROTTING INCARNATION OF GOD”

New York black metal vets Profanatica are releasing Rotting Incarnation of God on October 11 via Season of Mist, and the absolutely filthy title track is here now.

CLOUD RAT – “WEBSPINNER”

Michigan grinders Cloud Rat are releasing their new album Pollinator on September 13, and lead single “Webspinner” is here now. While grindcore bands can often start to blur, Cloud Rat have a genuinely unique take on the genre and that’s very clear on this song.

EYE FLYS – “CRUSHING OF THE HUMAN SPIRIT”

Eye Flys (whose lineup includes members of Full of Hell, Backslider, and Triac) have shared the jagged sludge-punk ripper “Crushing of the Human Spirit” off their upcoming debut EP Context (due 9/13 via Thrill Jockey). It’s slower, more accessible music than these musicians are usually known for, but still punishing and abrasive, and they pull it off very well.

HESITATION WOUNDS – “AT OUR BEST WHEN WE’RE ASLEEP”

Hesitation Wounds — the heavy hardcore band fronted by Touche Amore vocalist Jeremy Bolm that also features current and former members of The Hope Conspiracy, Trap Them, and Gouge Away — have shared a second single off their upcoming album Chicanery, and it’s a pained, passionate, hardcore ripper.

UNIFORM & THE BODY – “NOT GOOD ENOUGH”

Uniform and The Body have shared the second single off their second collaborative album, Everything That Dies Someday Comes Back (due 8/16 via Sacred Bones). Like the previous single, it’s another dose of pure filth.

RENOUNCED – “IN A YEARS TURNING”

Metalcore continues to make a big comeback, and one of the more buzzed-about new acts is UK band Renounced (who share member Sammy Urwin with Employed to Serve). They’re releasing their new album Beauty Is a Destructive Angel on September 27 via Deathwish/Holy Roar, and you can hear the promising new single “In A Years Turning” now.

IN COLD BLOOD – “SLIPPING INTO SENILITY”

In Cold Blood originally hailed from the same Cleveland metallic hardcore scene as Integrity and Ringworm (and frontman Blaze Tishko has played in both of those bands), and they’re now gearing up to release their first album of new music in 21 years. Read more about new single “Slipping Into Senility” here.

HOLY SERPENT – “LORD DECEPTOR”

Melbourne psych-doomers Holy Serpent are releasing their third album Endless in October, and you can read more about lead single “Lord Deceptor” here.

KNAAVES – “WEIGHT OF THE CROWN”

Milwaukee metallic hardcore band Knaaves (whose lineup includes former members of Enabler, Die Alone, and Amora Savant) are releasing their debut full-length, The Serpent’s Root, on September 3 via Confluence Records, and you can read more about new single “Weight of the Crown” here.

JAYE JAYLE – “SOLINE”

Jaye Jayle, the goth-Americana project of Young Widows’ Evan Patterson, is touring with Wovehand this year and he just shared a non-album cut from the sessions for last year’s No Trail and Other Unholy Paths, which features Cheyenne Mize on strings, Emma Ruth Rundle on guest vocals, and a choir. “It was a difficult choice to not include ‘Soline’ on our album,” Evan says. “Alas, the uplifting and almost gospel nature of the song just didn’t meld with the dark foliage of the record.” It’s still a lot darker than Evan makes it sound on paper, but we understand why it was difficult not to include it; this song is great.

PHARMAKON – “SPIT IT OUT”

Pharmakon has shared the second single off her upcoming album Devour, which is due 8/30 via Scared Bones. “Spit It Out” sees Margaret Chardiet pairing harsh, stream-of-consciousness screams with static-y white noise and not a sign of a rhythm section. She’s also touring.

DOMINANT FORCE – COSMIC DENIAL (EP STREAM)

Florida hardcore rippers Dominant Force returned today with a new 6-song EP on Triple B Records. They’ve gotten a lot of Cro-Mags comparisons, and you can hear that on Cosmic Denial, but they’re also turning into a force of their own. They’re melodic yet aggressive, and they manage to work in flashy ’80s metal leads without ever overstaying their welcome.
