19 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

JEFF TWEEDY – “FAMILY GHOST”

Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy is releasing a sister album to last year’s WARM called WARMER this Saturday (4/13) for Record Store Day. “At some point I separated the songs from the WARM/WARMER session into two records with individual character, but still tried to keep the overall tone and texture of the combined session consistent,” says Jeff. “In a lot of ways these two records could have been released as a double LP. WARMER means as much to me as WARM and might just as easily have been released as the first record of the pair.” The lead single from WARMER is “Family Ghost,” which does indeed sound as essential as anything on WARM, and not just like a leftover outtake.

CLINIC – “LAUGHING CAVALIER”

UK band Clinic release their first album in seven years, Wheeltappers and Shunters, on May 10 and they’ve just shared a second song from the album. “Laughing Cavalier” sets itself at a “fun fair” (we call them carnivals in the U.S.) where they posit maybe it’s not all that fun. “One of my favourite things is those contradictions,” Clinic frontman Ade Blackburn says. “Having the rug pulled from under you. I think that’s exciting – where you think you’ve got the measure of something but then that shifts. It’s not just about the double meaning with a line, it’s also about the way it’s sung. You can interpret something in the opposite way just from the delivery.”

PJ HARVEY – “THE MOTH” FEAT. LILY JAMES, “DESCENDING”

PJ Harvey wrote the mostly-instrumental score for the theater adaptation of classic 1950 film All About Eve, which debuted in London early in February, starring Gillian Anderson and Lily James. About the score, she told Pitchfork, “I have always loved stories, and so to compose music to support and enhance a story being told is a challenge I enjoy. I also love the freedom that working instrumentally can give me without the constraints of song form. For All About Eve I chose to work with my long-time collaborator James Johnston as he has a soulfulness and sensitivity to his playing that inspires me. I also worked with Kenrick Rowe who has a versatility to his drumming I knew I could experiment with until I found what was right.”

LAS NUBES – “QSW”

Miami’s Las Nubes began in 2014 as the solo project of Ale Campos of Wastelands, but they since evolved into a trio with bassist/backing vocalist Nina Carolina and drummer Emile Milgrim. They sing in both English and Spanish and their bio refers to them as “Miami’s answer to the Breeders and Best Coast,” which is pretty accurate. They’re also clearly on the rise, having played shows with Shonen Knife, Torche, Sheer Mag, and more. Their full-length debut album Smvt comes out this year via Sweat Records, and catchy new single “QSW” is out, along with a video directed by Gabriel Duque (of Zeta) and Ronny Roman.

BODY TYPE – “FREE TO AIR”

Australian band Body Type have just shared “Free to Air” from their forthcoming EP that’s due out next month via Partisan. Singer Annabel Blackman says it’s “about an old neighbor whose life seemed to play out entirely in his lounge room in front of the TV, which he blasted day and night. My bedroom faced looking into his lounge room, so it was almost like we were waking up and watching the morning news together or having a TV dinner after work…it was definitely not that romantic in reality though.” The song comes with a striking music video, directed by Matt Griffin, which superimposes faces and bodies in a variety of clever ways. “He is a master manipulator of screens and could slice us into an assortment of scenes and onto bodies without needing us to be physically present, which is the perfect disembodied embodiment to accompany the song.”

THE KING KHAN EXPERIENCE – “TURKEY RIDE”

King Khan is gearing up to release an album called Turkey Ride which is attributed to The King Khan Experience and is made up of recordings from when he lived in Bordeaux and Berlin, all dating from around 18 years ago, many of which have never been released on vinyl. Here’s the funky, soulful title track.

THE SOUNDWALK COLLECTIVE W/ PATTI SMITH – “IVRY”

UK duo The Soundwalk Collective are undertaking a trilogy of albums which “take their inspiration from the writings of three emblematic French poets: Antonin Artaud, Arthur Rimbaud and René Daumal, and their necessity to travel to different lands to acquire a new vision and perspective on themselves and artworks.” The first of these is The Peyote Dance which is based on Antonin Artaud’s book of the same name, and the album is a collaboration with Patti Smith. (They worked together previously on 2016’s Killer Road. “The poets enter the bloodstream, they enter the cells. For a moment, one is Artaud,” Smith says of her work on the album. “You can’t ask for it, you can’t buy it, you can’t take drugs for it to be authentic. STEVE LACY – “N SIDE”

The Internet guitarist Steve Lacy has shared his first new music since 2017’s Steve Lacy’s Demo. The Internet tweeted, “2 solo albums finished 🙃 1 this month. 1 next month.” Perhaps this is from one of them.

DREADNOUGHT – “TEMPERED”

Dreadnought have released the second single off their anticipated fourth album (and Profound Lore debut), Emergence. The ten-and-a-half minute “Tempered” covers a lot of ground its lengthy running time, from Kylesa-style metallic dream pop, to ’60s psych organ solos, to blasty black metal, to calming post-rock, and more. The band says, “‘Tempered’ is a turning point in the Emergence storyline, wherein the perspective of a once enraged and resentful self shifts focus upon ownership and growth.” Dreadnought also recently announced a tour with BIG|BRAVE.

DAMIEN JURADO – IN THE SHAPE OF A STORM (ALBUM STREAM)

Following a trilogy of ambitious, heavily arranged albums, Damien Jurado stripped things back to little more than his voice and acoustic guitar for his new album In The Shape of A Storm, and the gorgeous album is now here to stream in its entirety.

PINOCCHIO – s/t EP (EP STREAM)

Pinocchio is a new band fronted by Mary Jane Dunphe (of Olympia punks Vexx and her synthpop project CC Dust) and also featuring members of NYC punk bands Crazy Spirit, Dawn of Humans, and Anasazi. Their s/t EP is out now on Toxic State, and it sees these members going in a bit more of a garagey indie rock direction than their other bands, but still with a punk attitude. And Mary Jane Dunphe’s voice is truly powerful.

PIP BLOM – “RUBY”

Here’s another terrific early taste of the debut album from Amsterdam’s Pip Blom. “Ruby” chugs along in a Velvet Underground way, before exploding into a joyous chorus. Their album, Boat, is out May 31 via Heavenly/[PIAS].

BLOOD COMMAND – RETURN OF THE ARSONIST (EP STREAM)

Genre-defying Norwegian band Blood Command are releasing their new EP Return of the Arsonist on April 19 via Loyal Blood Records, and the whole thing is streaming now. The super ambitious EP covers everything from piercing hardcore punk to Paramore style pop punk to metal riffage to atmospheric synths and more. TRONOS – “PREMONITION” (ft. VOIVOD’S SNAKE & FAITH NO MORE’S BILLY GOULD)

Tronos, the new band from Napalm Death bassist Shane Embury, producer Russ Russell (who’s worked with Napalm Death and tons of other bands) and drummer Dirk Verbeuren (ex-Soilwork, currently in Megadeth), have shared another song off their upcoming debut album Celestial Mechanics (due 4/12 via Century Media). This one features Voivod frontman Snake and Faith No More bassist Billy Gould, and it’s a dose of psychedelic post-metal that should appeal to fans of all artists involved. “Having the chance to have Snake from Voivod singing on this track with me and Billy playing bass was an honor and I couldn’t have thought of any other people more perfect for this track,” says Shane Embury.

COURNTEY BARNETT – “EVERYBODY HERE HATES YOU”

Courtney Barnett is releasing the new song “Everybody Here Hates You” as a 12″ single on Record Store Day, backed by Tell Me How You Really Feel outtake “Small Talk,” and the new song is streaming now. Read more here.

MORRISSEY – “WEDDING BELL BLUES” FT. BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG

Morrissey‘s new all-covers album, California Sun, is out on May 10 and he’s just shared his version of Laura Nyro’s song “Wedding Bell Blues” (aka “Marry Me Bill”) that was a #1 hit for The 5th Dimension in 1969. The cover features Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and The Regrettes’ Lydia Night on backing vocals and you can read more about it here.

CAVE IN – “ALL ILLUSION”

Cave In have officially announced their new album, which features the last-ever recordings by the late Caleb Scofield. Caleb’s one lyrical contribution is on lead single “All Illusion.” Read more about the new album here.
