18 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

CAGE THE ELEPHANT – “BROKEN BOY” (ft. IGGY POP)

Cage the Elephant have released a new version of “Broken Boy” from last year’s Social Cues, and this new version features the legendary Iggy Pop singing one of the verses. “Cage is a super high energy outfit, living the Rock dream, so for a couple of fun minutes I was one of the boys. Sounds pretty wicked to me,” Iggy says.

ROSALÍA – “JURO QUE”

Rosalía is back with another new single, “Juro Que” (which translates to “I Swear That”), and after going in an increasingly pop direction on other recent singles, this one sees her returning to her flamenco-inspired roots.

ABYSMAL DAWN – “HEDONISTIC”

LA death metallers Abysmal Dawn are releasing their first album in six years, Phylogenesis, on April 17 via Season of Mist. The first single is the intense, chaotic “Hedonistic.”

DOJA CAT – “BOSS B*TCH”

LA rapper Doja Cat has released a new song from the Birds of Prey soundtrack (which also includes that recent Megan Thee Stallion/Normani song), and this one finds her going in a more clubby direction than usual.

ASH – “DARKEST HOUR OF THE NIGHT”

Long-running Irish band Ash release Teenage Wildlife: 25 Years Of Ash, on February 14 and along with hits like “Candy,” “Oh Yeah,” “Girl from Mars” and “Kung Fu,” and a few rarities, the compilation also features poppy new single “Darkest Hour of the Night.”

LAS KELLIES – “CLOSER”

Argentinian band Las Kellies have shared a second single from upcoming album Suck This Tangerine. Fans of danceable post-punk like Delta 5 and The Slits will definitely dig “Closer” which bounces along with a rubbery bassline, tight drumming and slashing guitars.

ELLIS – “FALL APART”

Hamilton, Ontario songwriter Linnea Siggelkow is releasing her debut LP as Ellis, Born Again, on April 3 via Fat Possum Records. She’s shared the first single, “Fall Apart,” a mellow slice of dream pop. Ellis is touring through May in support of the album; she plays the 2020 edition of SXSW, then heads out for some dates with Ratboys. After that, she has a run of headlining shows, including an NYC stop at Elsewhere Zone One. See all of her upcoming dates here.

TINDERSTICKS – SEE MY GIRLS EP

Tindersticks have a new EP, See My Girls, that’s out now. The title track is from last year’s No Treasure but Hope and appears here in a new edit as well as an instrumental dub version, plus the David Boulter penned instrumental “A Street Walker’s Carol” and “Blood And Bone,” which features frontman Stuart Staples’ daughter, Sidonie, on lead vocals. Stuart and Sidonie have also collaborated on video for “See My Girls” which you can watch below. Tindersticks play NYC and Knoxville’s Big Ears this spring.

BC CAMPLIGHT – “BACK TO WORK”

BC Camplight will be release new album Shortly After Takeoff on April 24 via Bella Union. The first single is “Back to Work” which vacillates between a weird, heavy electronic chorus and a more folk-rock-y verses, while lyrically dealing with getting on with it: “I’ve gotta block out most of the pain just / like John McClane does / I wanna look myself in the eye / be a normal guy / and say some clever shit whenever I’m about to die.”

TONY ALLEN AND HUGH MASEKELA – “WE’VE LANDED”

Legendary South African jazz trumpeter Hugh Masekela died in 2018 but sessions he did in 2010 with equally legendary Nigerian drummer Tony Allen have now been turned into a new album, Rejoice, which will be out March 20 via World Circuit Records. The first single is “We’ve Landed” which showcases both performers’ distinctive styles, but also sone spoken lyrics from Allen. “The song is dedicated to today’s youth,” explains Tony, “the lyric addresses people at seventeen, eighteen, nineteen years old, who are slowly becoming more mature, finding out who they are and realizing that it’s their generation’s turn to wake up!”

JANE HERSHIPS (SPIDER) – “BEST FRIENDS”

Jane Herships has played in many Brooklyn bands (TEEN, Amazing Baby, Drawing Boards) and also made records as Spider, but will release an album under her own name, The Home Record, on February 28. The first single, “Best Friends,” is a gorgeous, sweeping piece of dreampop with an especially lovely vocal from Jane.

EYE FLYS – “TUBBA LARD”

Eye Flys — the band of Full of Hell guitarist Spencer Hazard, Backslider bassist Jake Smith (on guitar and vocals), former Backslider drummer Patrick Forrest, and Triac’s Kevin Bernsten on bass — debuted last year with the ripping Context EP, and now they have announced their debut album. It’s called Tub of Lard, and it’s due March 20 via Thrill Jockey. The first single is the sorta-title track “Tubba Lard,” and it’s a killer mix of sludge and hardcore that picks up where the EP left off and continues to push Eye Flys’ sound forward.

KAREN O & DANGER MOUSE – “PERFECT DAY” (LOU REED COVER)

Unlike Lour Reed’s sweeping original, Karen O & Dangermouse take an understated approach, with gently strummed guitar, light synthy strings and Karen’s fragile vocal delivery.

While there is a certain stream-of-consciousness, diary-entry quality most of Mark’s recent work, “My Brother Loves Seagulls” is a much more songlike and lyrical, even if it doesn’t follow pop structures. Mark tells a tale of a health scare his brother faced against gorgeous, cascading acoustic guitars.
