18 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

PAUL SIMON – “CAN’T RUN BUT”

Paul Simon’s new album, In the Blue Light, features songs from his career that he says, in a press release, “I thought were almost right, or were odd enough to be overlooked the first time around. Re-doing arrangements, harmonic structures, and lyrics that didn’t make their meaning clear, gave me time to clarify in my own head what I wanted to say, or realize what I was thinking and make it more easily understood.” He’s shared his new version of “Cant Run But,” which was originally on 1990’s Rhythm of the Saints. Working with string ensemble yMusic and arranger Bryce Dessner of The National, Simon transforms the song into a chamber piece while maintaining the original‘s featherlight skittering pace.

MAC DEMARCO – “HONEY MOON” (HARUOMI HONOSO COVER)

Mac DeMarco, who just started his own label, is a noted fan of Yellow Magic Orchestra’s Haruomi Hosono who has released many great solo records in addition to his work with YMO. Light in the Attic, who just reissued five of those Hosono LPs, asked Mac to cover a song, and he offered up this lovely rendition of “Honey Moon ” which is off Hosono’s 1975 LP, Tropical Dandy (not one of the Light in the Attic reissues, by the way).

KAMI – “REBOOT” (ft. CHANCE THE RAPPER, JOEY PURP, SMOKO ONO)

Chicago rapper KAMI is releasing his sophomore album Very Slight on September 14, which includes the new single “Reboot,” which features his Chicago pals Chance the Rapper, Joey Purp, and Smoko Ono. If you’re into Chance or Chicago’s thriving rap scene in general, this should be right up your alley.

LIL DURK & FUTURE – “SPIN THE BLOCK”

Chicago meets Atlanta as Lil Durk and Future team up for this new banger, which sees both rappers in melodic sing-rap mode over ominous, trap-ish production.

MR TWIN SISTER – “POWER OF TWO”

Having launched their own radio station earlier this summer, Mr. Twin Sister have been dropping new singles since. “Power of Two” is a real too-slow-to-disco sexytime jam that calls for lava lamps and deep shag rugs.

CHRISTINE & THE QUEENS – “LA MARCHEUSE”

Alt-pop great Christine & the Queens is releasing both English and French versions of her upcoming album Chris, and a new single from the French version, “La Marcheuse,” is here. (The English version, “The Walker,” is still unreleased.) Whether you understand the lyrics or not, it’s clear that this is yet another very promising taste of this LP.

E-40 – “AIN’T TALKIN BOUT NOTHING” (ft. G PERICO, VINCE STAPLES)

Fast-rapping, highly influential West Coast rap/hyphy vet E-40 is back with a new album The Gift of Gab, and one of the songs sees him teaming with two of the brightest new voices in West Coast rap, G Perico and Vince Staples. The song sounds like classic E-40, and it’s awesome to hear these three multi-generational greats on a track together.

MIRRORS FOR PSYCHIC WARFARE – “CROOKED TEETH”

Neurosis co-frontman Scott Kelly and Chicago heavy-music staple Sanford Parker are releasing a new Mirrors for Psychic Warfare album, I See What I Became, on September 28 via Neurosis’ Neurot Recordings. A new song from that is out, “Crooked Teeth,” which is kind of like part folk, part industrial, and full creepy. The duo is also currently touring with Godflesh, including a NYC show this Saturday (8/25).

COLTER WALL – “SASKATCHEWAN 1881”

Canadian country singer Colter Wall is set to release anticipated sophomore LP Songs of the Plains on October 12, and he shared another song from it, “Saskatchewan 1881,” which is more evidence of the 23-year-old’s ability to channel the greats of ’70s outlaw country so genuinely that he sounds like he could’ve been one of their peers.

KIM PETRAS – “ALL THE TIME”

Rising pop star and Charli XCX collaborator Kim Petras shared her newest single, the bouncy, bubblegum “All The Time.” It’s one of eight tracks the Cologne, Germany-born singer has released over the last year – still no word on a debut album, though. Kim worked again with her controversial collaborator and producer Dr. Luke, who was accused of rape by Kesha, on the song. Before embarking on tour with Tove Styrke this fall, she performs at the US Open Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day in Flushing Meadows, Queens on Saturday (tickets).

BABY DAYLINER – “WHEN I LOOK INTO YOUR EYES,” “KEY LARGO,” and “OUT HERE UNDER THE FALLING RAIN”

NYC native Baby Dayliner returned last summer with his first new record in over ten years, and now he’s returned again with another new EP, Key Largo, which he described as “some new songs to soundtrack your end of summer.” True to his form of making music that, as we previously described, is “part Scott Walker and part ’80s synthpop,” the songs on Key Largo make for a catchy, synthy listen.

TUNS – “WHEN YOU’RE READY” B/W “KISS YOURSELF GOODBYE”

TUNS, the Canadian indie supergroup of ’90s vets Chris Murphy (Sloan) and old friends Matt Murphy (Super Friendz) and Mike O’Neil (The Inbreds), just dropped a new single which you can read more about HERE.

NICOLE YUN – “TOMMIE”

While Eternal Summers are still going strong, singer-guitarist Nicole Yun is looking to explore other sunny sonic territory on her first solo album. You can listen to the Manchester beat-eque first single “Tommie” and read more about the LP HERE.

SMOKING POPES – “AMANDA MY LOVE”

Alt-rock vets Smoking Popes are releasing their first album with their original lineup since 1998, featuring new single “Amanda My Love,” which we wrote more about HERE.

KEVIN MORBY – “24TH AMENDMENT”

Kevin Morby continued a new song to a compilation of songs based on each of the 27 amendments to the U.S. Constitution, which we wrote more about HERE.
