18 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

DJANGO DJANGO – “SWIMMING AT NIGHT”

Eccentric UK popsters Django Django returned earlier this year with the very solid Marble Skies, and now they’re following it with the Winter’s Beach EP, which was recorded after Marble Skies was finished but before it was released. It’s due October 12 via Ribbon Music, and the first single is the bouncy “Swimming At Night.”

THE TALLEST MAN ON EARTH – “THEN I WILL SING NO MORE”

Swedish indie-folk great The Tallest Man On Earth is continuing his trend of dropping one-off singles, and the latest is “Then I Will Sing No More.” This one’s got an old, crackling soul and hearkens back to his earliest material. It’s good stuff.

THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART & LAURA CARBONE – “THE FLOWERS BENEATH YOUR FEET”

While Kip Berman has put The Pains of Being Pure at Heart on ice to focus on his solo project The Natural, here’s a neat duet billed to TPOBPAH and Berlin-based singer Laura Carbone. It’s a smokey track, pretty far from anything the Pains have ever done, but if you wanted to compare it to “Sometimes Always,” the duet between Jesus and Mary Chain and Hope Sandoval, it’s a little like that, though it soars just a bit higher.

THE 1975 – “SINCERITY IS SCARY”

The 1975’s new album A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships drops November 30 and they’ve dropped its fourth single, “Sincerity Is Scary.” So far every single from this album has sounded drastically different from the last; this one sees The 1975 going into into jazz/soul territory, but without losing that modern alt-pop shine they usually have. You gotta expect the unexpected with The 1975, but I never saw this coming… and they pull it off pretty damn well.

MOZZY – “THUGZ MANSION” (ft. TY DOLLA $IGN & YG)

Sacramento rapper Mozzy’s anticipated new album Gangland Landlord comes out October 5 and he just shared another single from it. This one’s a tender, sentimental song with fellow West Coast rappers Ty Dolla $ign and YG, and it pays tribute to a fallen West Coast legend, Tupac. “Watching Tupac struggle and then overcome the struggle was one of the main reasons I idolized him growing up,” Mozzy told Billboard.

TOY – “THE WILLO” & “ENERGY”

UK motorik psych band TOY are back with their first new music in two years. They’ll release a new 12″ single via Tough Love this week featuring two new songs: “The Willo” is pretty different for the group, mellow and flower-powered with keyboards and vintage drum machines; while “Energy” is a more typical revved up, krautrockin’ pile-driver. Both tracks will be on TOY’s fourth album which is due out in January 2019.

BLOODBATH – “BLOODICIDE” (ft. mems of CARCASS, BOLT THROWER, more

Bloodbath (members of Paradise Lost, Katatonia, Opeth and Craft) are releasing a new album, The Arrow Of Satan Is Drawn, on October 26 via Peaceville Records, and lead single “Bloodicide” features Carcass’ Jeff Walker, Bolt Thrower/Memoriam’s Karl Willetts and Cancer’s John Walker. As you’d expect, it sounds like an evil, bloody mess.

MARIAH CAREY – “GTFO”

Mariah Carey is preparing to announce her fifteenth studio album, and first since 2014’s Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse. The title and release date have yet to be revealed, but she did share a new song, “GTFO,” produced by Drake collaborator (and dvsn member) Nineteen85. With its repeated lyrics of “how about you get the fuck out” and its tropical, slinky vibes, it’s the ultimate kiss-off with a smile.

AL GREEN – “BEFORE THE NEXT TEARDROP FALLS” (FREDDY FENDER COVER)

Soul legend Al Green released his first new recording in a decade, and we wrote more about it here.

SPAIN – “LAUREL, CLEMENTINE”

Josh Haden with release his seventh album as Spain next month. New single “laurel, clementine” shows the tempos have climbed since the days of slowcore classic The Blue Moods of Spain,  but the brooding atmosphere remains.

CHE LINGO & MICK JENKINS – “NO SIDEKICKS”

UK rapper Che Lingo teams with US rapper Mick Jenkins for his new single, which we wrote more about here.

GEORGIA ANNE MULDROW – “AEROSOL”

SET AND SETTING – “WANDERING TRIBULATION”

Heavy post-rockers Set and Setting’s new album drops in October, and we wrote more about second single “Wandering Tribulation” here.

SMASHING PUMPKINS – “SILVERY SOMETIME (GHOSTS)”
