19 New Songs Out Today
So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…
AUTOMATIC – “TOO MUCH MONEY”
LA trio Automatic, which includes Izzy Glaudini (synths, vocals), Lola Dompé (drums, vocals) and Halle Saxon (bass, vocals), make catchy rock an informed by post-punk, reggae, krautrock and more. (Dompé’s father is Kevin Haskins of Bauhaus/Love & Rockets, by the way.) The group have just signed with Stones Throw who will put out their debut album in September and you can listen to “Too Much Money,” propelled by a motoroik beat and heaps of attitude, now. The’ve also got a residency in L.A. in August.

REDD KROSS – THE PARTY UNDERGROUND (FT. BUZZ OSBORNE)
“I wanted to hear three of my favorite guitarists and collaborators (Buzz Osborne, Jason Shapiro and Jeff McDonald) trade off solos whilst we celebrated the finer things deep in the bowels of the underground, expressing gratitude for a life lived in the cultural petri-dish of the world, the world of underground culture,” says Redd Kross’ Steve McDonald of “The Party Underground” from their forthcoming album Beyond the Door. “I’ve been playing nightclubs since 1979 and I was 12, and it was time for me to talk up the wonders down here. The best stuff will always come up from the bottom. It’s the Party Underground.”

EZRA FURMAN – “EVENING PRAYER” & “I WANNA BE YOUR GIRLFRIEND”
With his new album Twelve Nudes on the way next month, Ezra Furman has just shared two songs from it. Of “I Wanna be Your Girlfriend,” Ezra says it’s “a romantic song of transgender longing. It’s another entry in my series of ‘I Wanna’ songs (in the tradition of the Ramones). I thought it was time we had an ‘Earth Angel’ for the queers. Of course because it’s an Ezra Furman tune, there’s a little bit of desperation, religion and body-talk.” The other song, “Evening Prayer,” is “our rallying cry. We music fans go to shows for transcendence; it’s like being called to prayer. But as Abraham Heschel said, ‘Prayer is meaningless unless it is subversive, unless it seeks to overthrow and to ruin the pyramids of callousness, hatred, opportunism and falsehood.’ I want all our fans to become activists. We punk fans have so much energy to give to the fight against injustice, i.e. the abuse of the poor by the rich, i.e. climate change. So this is one to get you in the mood.”

WORKING MEN’S CLUB – “TEETH”
New UK group Working Men’s Club make dark, heavy dance music. “Basically we just want to confuse the fuck out of people, in a good way,” says frontman Sydney Minsky-Sargeant. They’ve just signed to Heavenly who will release their new single “Teeth” in August with a Gabe Gurnsey remix on the flip. You can watch its video now.

EYES OF THE LORD – “MISERY FEELS LIKE HOME,” “THREE PARTS SAD,” & “SEVENTEEN”
Eyes of the Lord (former 100 Demons vocalist Bruce LePage plus members of Twitching Tongues, God’s Hate and The Midnight Sons) are following their 2017 EP Call It War with the full-length album Misery Feels Like Home on August 30 via Closed Casket Activities, and three songs are streaming now. All three are metallic hardcore crushers, and they sound even rawer and filthier than the EP, and LePage’s voice sounds extra gravelly on these. Check ’em out.

SQUID – “THE CLEANER”
Squid are a buzzed-about British post-punk band signed to Dan Carey’s Speedy Wunderground label, and they’ve now announced a new EP called Town Centre, due September 6 via that label. New single “The Cleaner” is a seven-and-a-half-minute dose of funk-punk that should bring to mind ESG or early Talking Heads, and Squid do justice to that sound, thanks in part to the nervous energy of singer/drummer Ollie Judge, who sounds like he’s just about to go off the rails. The band have tons of upcoming UK/EU dates, including Green Man, End of the Road, Pitchfork Paris, the Primavera 20th Anniversary Weekender, and more. Hopefully they’ll come to the US soon too. All dates here.

NERVUS – “FLIES”
UK punks Nervus are releasing their new album Tough Crowd on September 27 via Big Scary Monsters, and the catchy, anthemic new single “Flies” is out now. Of the new album, singer Em Foster says, “I want people to feel joyful but I also want people to feel angry. I want people to stop underestimating their ability to effect change. Tough Crowd is very much focused on the here and now and the situations we find ourselves in with austerity, the rise of fascism in Europe and the increasing divisions and tensions in society that those cause.”

NIGHTFELL – “THE SWALLOWING OF FLIES”
Nightfell — the brainchild of Todd Burdette (Tragedy, His Hero Is Gone, Warcry) and Tim Call (Mournful Congregation, Sempiternal Dusk, Weregoat) — are releasing their third album, A Sanity Deranged, on September 13 via 20 Buck Spin. The first single is “The Swallowing of Flies,” which is seven and a half minutes of raw, evil, reverb-heavy death-doom.

NASTIE BAND – “CIRCLE OF KNIVES”
Nastie Band, a project led by visual artist Frank Haines (under the name Sandy Smiles), and also featuring Faith No More/Imperial Teen member Roddy Bottum and songs with vocals by the 81-year-old Chris Kachulis, are, as mentioned, releasing their self-titled debut on July 26. Latest single “Circle of Knives” sounds positively evil.

SHOCK NARCOTIC – “ERRATIC SMEARING VITALS”

Second single “Erratic Smearing Vitals” is out now, and it’s 58 seconds of grindy madness. Listen at Decibel.

BRIGHTNESS – DALLAS
Australian musician Alex Knight released his first album as Brightness, Teething, in 2017, and he’s preparing to follow it with a new one that he recorded with Sam Evian. “I wrote ‘Dallas’ when I was living alone in my brothers garage,” Alex says. “It’s probably hard to tell, but I was listening to a lot of Springsteen at the time. I was inspired especially by his ‘Darkness On The Edge Of Town’ record…the themes etc. I’d pretty much razed my life to the ground, and was intent on looking upwards…looking outwards.”

SINEAD O’BRIEN – “TAKING ON TIME”
London based poet and performer Sinead O’Brien, originally from Limerick, Ireland, released a new single, the post punk-infused, stream of consciousness “Taking On Time.” It’s out on limited vinyl via Speedy Wunderground along with its digital release, and about it track, Sinead says, “this track is something quite ambitious for me, there is no genre, no setting. It’s got to stand on its own. Fragments of city walls open a lyrical examination into order and chaos against the music which pulls and tears ahead like a runaway train. Everything and nothing happens. It’s a still life film. It feels both ambitious and impossible.”

A$AP FERG – “WAM” (ft. MADEINTYO)
A$AP Ferg has been dropping new singles lately, and he’s back with yet another instantly-satisfying banger, “Wam.” He debuted it in Revolin’s new Step Out of Line campaign, and said, “I love any opportunity to celebrate women which is exactly what I get to do with Revlon’s Step Out of Line campaign. We share a vision, I’m not afraid to live boldly and Revlon encourages women to do the same.”
