19 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

WREKMEISTER HARMONIES – “MIDNIGHT TO SIX”

Wrekmeister Harmonies have unveiled another broody track off the upcoming We Love To Look At The Carnage, which was made with an expanded four-piece lineup featuring Thor Harris (Swans, Shearwater, etc) on percussion and Xiu Xiu’s Jamie Stewart on electronics, and which drops next week.

THE JACKA – “CAN’T GO HOME” (ft. FREDDIE GIBBS)

Bay Area rapper The Jacka was sadly killed in a 2015 shooting at 37 years old, and his first posthumous album Murder Weapon is coming out February 28 via The Artist Records/EMPIRE. It features this sentimental new song, featuring the great Freddie Gibbs.

HOT SNAKES – “I SHALL BE FREE”

Hot Snakes are releasing a series of four 7″ singles leading up to their next record (details TBA). Here’s the Spring installment, “I Shall Be Free,” which leads in with a little dubby melodica before bludgeoning you with a crushing riff. Rick Froberg and the rest of the band sound majorly energized here and the video was animated by Tiger Reis (the 13-year-old offspring of the band’s Swami John Reis).

ANNA BURCH – “PARTY’S OVER”

“It’s kind of strange but I already started envisioning the video as we were listening to the playback during recording,” says Anna Burch of her new single and its video which she directed. “I was originally picturing a runaway bride scenario, but I pivoted to runaway groom with the 60s sci fi angle. The song’s lyrics are a bit voyeuristic and, with the 60s sounding 12 string guitar, that probably helped inspire the scenario. A lot of my close friends and family have gotten engaged or married in the last year so weddings have been on the surface of my psyche as well.” Anna’s new album If You’re Dreaming is out April 3 via Polyvinyl.

BANOFFEE – “CONTAGIOUS”

Australian artists Banoffee releases her debut album, Look At Us Now Dad (which features SOPHIE, Empress Of, Cupcakke and more) on February 21`and here’s a catchy new single from it. Banoffee co-directed the winter-themed video. “The video is about loneliness and the feelings of ostracisation that arise when your issues seem too much for the world to handle,” Banoffee says. “It follows a woman roaming the landscape in a wedding dress, totally prepared to give herself up to something, yet completely alone and isolated by her sadness. The circles in the clip represent a safety zone, something I created for myself when I felt like I had to hide what I was going through in order to seem fit for love or friendship. I wanted the video to evoke a sense of longing and eeriness, like everyone has gone home, fed up with the things I still need and crave.”

I BREAK HORSES – “I’LL BE THE DEATH OF YOU”

Swedish artist I Break Horses has shared a second single from her long-awaited third album, Warnings. “I’ll Be the Death of You” is both icy and inviting, with mile-wide synths and an earworm chorus. The video was directed by Douglas Hart, the former Jesus & Mary Chain bassists who’s make promo clips for My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream and more. “With a song so beautifully arranged and musically textured, the video needed to mirror this by using extremes of color and light to underscore the sound,” says Hart. “Also musically the song has an epic quality… So the dramatic locations were chosen to match the scope of the arrangement.”

NICOLE ATKINS – “CAPTAIN” ft. BRITT DANIEL

Nicole Atkins is releasing a new album, Italian Ice, due out April 17 via Single Lock Records. She recorded it at Alabama’s Muscle Shoals Sound Studio with a band made up of members of the Bad Seeds, Dap-Kings, Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section and more. “Musically, it doesn’t make any sense,” Nicole says. “But I’m a superfan of all of them, and we ended up with the weirdest, craziest band ever. It just became this awesome misfit party.” Spoon’s Britt Daniel features on the first single, “Captain,” which is thick with nostalgia and pedal steel.

TOO FREE – “ELASTIC”

Too Free, the danceable group featuring Big Freedia associate Awad Bilal, Merchandise frontman Carson Cox, and drummer Don Godwin (of Callers), will drop their debut album next week and here’s one last early taste. “‘Elastic’ is an attempt to define those intangible spaces between seduction and letting go of your inhibitions,” says Awad Bilal. “Unlearning generations of conditioning to explore the different kinds of love that we are capable of feeling without stigma or fear.”

ADULT MOM – “BERLIN”

Adult Mom are about to head out on tour with Palehound, and ahead of that they’ve shared a new single, the catchy indie rock track “Berlin.” “‘Berlin’ is a song that took over a year to write,” bandleader Stevie Knipe says. “It’s about processing the loss of an important friendship without knowing the exact cause of the loss. Through loss, there are moments recalled, like meeting for the first time, the moment you got close with that person, singing ‘hole’ in dorm rooms, drinking beer in a bathroom, and of course, the complete paralyzation that comes with loss. It’s about being in between healed and not, and trying my best to calculate the reasons why she left.”

MOON DESTROYS (ex-TORCHE) – “BLUE GIANT” (ft. MASTODON’S TROY SANDERS)

Moon Destroys is the new band of Juan Montoya (MonstrO/Killer Be Killed, ex-Torche) and Evan Diprima (Brother Hawk, ex-Royal Thunder, and they’re releasing their debut EP Maiden Voyage on march 27 via Brutal Panda. The EP feaures two guest vocalists, Paul Masvidal (Cynic, Death, etc) and Mastodon’s Troy Sanders, the latter of whom also played in Killer Be Killed with Juan Montoya. Troy sings on the just-released single “Blue Giant.”

KING PRINCESS – “OHIO”

King Princess is releasing a deluxe version of her 2019 debut album, Cheap Queen, due out on Friday. Included it in it are five previously unreleased tracks, and the first of those is “Ohio,” a live favorite Mikaela Strauss has been performing since the release of her first EP.

MYRKUR – “LEAVES OF YGGDRASIL”

Myrkur has shared another song off her upcoming, traditional Nordic folk-inspired Folkesange, and “Leaves of Yggdrasil” is indeed in the trad-folk realm, with a little ethereal dream pop in the mix too.

JOHANNA WARREN – “BED OF NAILS”

Portland, OR folk singer Johanna Warren is back with her fifth LP, and follow-up to 2018’s Gemini II, Chaotic Good. It’s due out May 1 via Wax Nine/Carpark Records, and the first single is the beautifully melancholy “Bed of Nails.” “The chorus, ‘each day it’s a little harder to believe,’ has a sort of double meaning,” Johanna says. “Like, it can be hard to see the good in people and stay optimistic in a world that seems to be falling apart… but simultaneously we’re waking up and starting to question the lies, feeling the matrix of illusion loosening its grip, the old story losing its power.”

HEATHER WOODS BRODERICK – “HUMMINGBIRD SKYLIGHT”

Heather Woods Broderick has followed her very good 2019 album Invitation with a new single, the moody, minimal “Hummingbird Skylight.”

BACCHAE – “LIFE ONLINE”

DC post-punks Bacchae shared another song off their upcoming Pleasure Vision, the paranoid modernity of “Life Online.”

THE RENTALS – “ABOVE THIS BROKEN WORLD”

The Rentals keep on rolling out their anticipated space-themed album Q36, and this one finds Matt Sharp in more of an eerie, atmospheric mode at first, before erupting into blissful psych-pop.

THE STROKES – “AT THE DOOR”

The Strokes have officially announced their new album The New Abnormal and released the lead single. Not a bad first taste.

CORIKY (IAN MACKAYE) – “CLEAN KILL”

Coriky, the new band of Ian MacKaye, his Fugazi bandmate Joe Lally, and his Evens bandmate Amy Farina, will release their self-titled debut album on March 27 via Dischord, and the very cool lead single “Clean Kill” is out now. Read more about it here.

IAN CHANG – “AUDACIOUS” (ft. KAZU of BLONDE REDHEAD)

Drummer/composer Ian Chang, who plays in Son Lux and Landlady, is releasing his first-ever full-length solo album, 属 Belonging, on April 24 via City Slang. Read more about new single “Audacious” (featuring Kazu of Blonde Redhead) here.
