19 New Songs Out Today

Sheck Wes Mudboy

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

LIL BABY & GUNNA – “NEVER RECOVER” (ft. DRAKE)

Lil Baby and Gunna released their anticipated and already buzzed-about collaborative album Drip Harder, and excitingly, it features Lil Baby’s “Yes Indeed” collaborator Drake on closing track “Never Recover.” This one’s got a dark, ominous beat and finds Drake in aggressive rap mode before Gunna and Lil Baby turn things into more of an auto-tune fest.

SHECK WES – “GMAIL”

Sheck Wes’ anticipated debut album MUDBOY is here (via Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music and Travis Scott’s Cactus Jack Records), and in addition to breakout single “Mo Bamba” and more recent single “Chippi Chippi,” it’s got a ton of other instantly appealing songs too. It’s hard to pick a favorite this soon, but one that’s quickly catching our ears is “Gmail,” where Sheck flaunts some of his catchiest hooks over a dizzying beat from fellow Harlem artist Yunglunchbox.

ROC MARCIANO & DJ MUGGS = “SHIT I’M ON”

Roc Marciano and DJ Muggs are both having a super prolific year. Roc already released two albums, Muggs released one, and now they’re releasing a collaborative album, KAOS, on October 19 via Soul Assassins. Lead single “Shit I’m On” is exactly the kind of throwback-yet-timeless rap you’d expect from these two.

ELVIS COSTELLO – “SUSPECT MY TEARS”

Elvis Costello’s new album, Look Now, is out next week and he’s just shared “Suspect My Tears” which is a gorgeous, string-laden soul number. “Not always having a reason to put music on the page, I’m always delighted when a recording session comes out as I’ve heard it in my head,” says Elvis. “I could not have asked more from our New York players, the string section sounding as rich and full as twice their number. When I was a kid listening to Tamla and Philly recordings, like those produced by Thom Bell, I always imagined they were played by massive symphony orchestras in a cathedral-like space. I realize now that is what reverb is for.”

MR TWIN SISTER – “TOPS AND BOTTOMS”

After a string of singles this year, Brooklyn’s Mr. Twin Sister have announced their new album, Salt, will be out October 25. With the news comes another new single, “Suspect My Tears,” which slides lithely into electro-funk territory.

AMOR – “GLIMPSES ACROSS THUNDER”

Glasgow-based four-piece AMOR formed around two years ago, and includes Franz Ferdinand drummer Paul Thomson and prolific experimental musician Richard Youngs who has credits going back to the mid-’90s. Amor make disco, but the odd-shaped and very human kind favored by the likes of Arthur Russell and legendary The Loft DJ, David Mancuso. It’s also a little like another Scottish band, The Blue Nile. Read more about it HERE.

HOLY GHOST! – “ANXIOUS”

NYC dance duo Holy Ghost! have a new single, “Anxious,” which will be out October 26. It’ll be their first release for West End Records after years on DFA, but otherwise its business as usual as you can hear:

ALUNAGEORGE – CHAMPAGNE EYES (EP STREAM)

AlunaGeorge returned today with their new Champagne Eyes EP, which features their recent single “Super Emotion” (ft. Cautious Clay), as well as songs featuring Baauer and Bryson Tiller.

DAVE EAST & STLYES P – “LOAD MY GUN” (ft. THE LOX)

Dave East and The LOX’s Styles P released their collaborative album Beloved today, which includes “Load My Gun,” a collaboration with the other two members of The LOX, Jadakiss and Sheek Louch. As you’d probably guess, it sounds like the kind of song that would’ve come out no later than 2002… but it sounds pretty great in 2018 too.

BOBBY SESSIONS – “THE HATE U GIVE”

“Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Now, facing pressures from all sides of the community, Starr must find her voice and stand up for what’s right,” is the premise for the upcoming drama The Hate U Give, and rising rapper Bobby Sessions wrote the powerful, thematically appropriate titular song for the film’s soundtrack.

MAXWELL – “SHAME”

“Shame” is the first single off NIGHT, which is due out in 2019 and will complete Maxwell’s trilogy that began with 2009’s BLACKsummers’night and continued with 2016’s blackSUMMERS’night. We wrote more about it HERE.

Tom Morello shared another song off his guest-filled solo album, The Atlas Underground, and this one features indie-psych lifers Portugal. The Man and EDM newcomer Whethan. (It was also co-written by Matt Shultz of Cage the Elephant). Tom says the song “is about how the dreams, and depression, and love and the lack of it on the emotional steps of the gallows are processed.”

HAIRBAND – “FLYING”

Hairband formed in 2016, their members all being part of the city’s DIY scene and include folks who are also in Spinning Coin, Breakfast Muff, Lush Purr and Kaputt. Like a lot of Scottish DIY — we can take it all the way back to Orange Juice in 1979 — there is an innocent quality to their melodies and vocals (which are lovely) while at the same time there is a complex nature to their music, using odd time signatures and rhythms.
