19 New Songs Out Today
So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…
MARK MORTON (of LAMB OF GOD) – “CROSS OFF” (ft. CHESTER BENNINGTON)
Lamb of God guitarist Mark Morton is releasing his solo debut Anesthetic on March 1, and it features vocal contributions by Mark Lanegan, Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe, Testament frontman Chuck Billy, Prince Markie Dee, and others, and instrumental contributions by David Ellefson (Megadeth), Jean-Paul Gaster (Clutch), and more. It also features the late Chester Bennington, who Morton was fortunate enough to work with before the Linkin Park frontman’s tragic passing. “I was really impressed for a guy at his level, at the place in the career he was at, someone of his stature and celebrity, to have that level of humility and commitment to come in there and treat this like it would be a Linkin Park song, or his own song or whatever,” Morton said. GIRLPOOL – “WHAT CHAOS IS IMAGINARY”
Girlpool have shared the title track from their new album, What Chaos is Imaginary, which is out February 1 via ANTI-. Moody, ethereal and drenched in strings and gorgeous harmonies, it’s unlike anything they’ve done before.

THE COATHANGERS – “BIMBO”
The Coathangers are known for raucous punk, which might have you checking to see if “Bimbo” is in fact by them. With it’s pretty singing and harmonies, it’s a gentle curveball…at least until the chorus hits and The Coathangers we know reemerge. The song’s from their new album The Devil You Know which is out March 8 via Suicide Squeeze.

OOZING WOUND – “TWEEN SHITBAG”
Chicago noise metal weirdos Oozing Wound are releasing their new album High Anxiety on March 15 via Thrill Jockey, and today they’re streaming lead single “Tween Shitbag.” It’s a chaotic, dissonant, and off-kilter blend of harsh sounds, larynx-shredding shouts, and just the right amount of melody. It’s cool, wild stuff.

AMINE – “HUNNYBEE” (UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA) & “HUNGRY HIPPO” (TIERRA WHACK) FREESTYLES/REMIXES
The super-fun Portland rapper Aminé has released two new freestyles, one over psych-pop band Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s “Hunnybee” and one over rising rap eccentric Tierra Whack’s “Hungry Hippo.” The former is bouncy and fun while the latter is more melancholic, and both are worth hearing.

IBIBIO SOUND MACHINE – “TELL ME (DOKO MIEN)”
UK based funk band Ibibio Sound Machine will release new album Doko Mien on March 22 via Merge Records. “Music is a universal language, but spoken language can help you think about what makes you emotional, what makes you feel certain feelings, what you want to see in the world,” says frontwoman Eno Williams who sings in both English and Ibibio on the album. You can get a taste with the title track of the album, an electro-jam worthy of the Paradise Garage.

ANGELO DE AUGUSTINE – “YOU NEEDED LOVE, I NEEDED YOU” (AND LIVE VIDEO FT. SUFJAN STEVENS)
Bare-bones singer/songwriter Angelo de Augustine is gearing up to release his second album for Sufjan Stevens’ Asthmatic Kitty label, the Thomas Bartlett-produced Tomb, and he has shared another song from it, the gentle and gorgeous “You Needed Love, I Needed You.” He also shared a live session video for the song, featuring Sufjan. The album is out digitally this week and will be out physically in stores the following week.

ABJECTS – “NEVER GIVE UP”
Though they’re based in London, Abjects members originally hail from Spain, Japan and Italy. Their sound is rooted in garage punk and C-86-style indie, their harmonies make them something special, as single “Never Give Up” proves. It’s the title track from their debut LP, due February 15 on Yippee Ki Yay.

ROSETTA – SOWER OF WIND (EP STREAM)
Rosetta have released an ambient EP to accompany last year’s Utopioid, and they explain the premise like this: “These sounds are organic outgrowths of latent ideas from each of the four parts of Utopioid. SHARON VAN ETTEN – “SEVENTEEN”
“Seventeen” is the third song (and second proper single) released from Sharon Van Etten’s highly anticipated new album, which we wrote more about here.

LEE FIELDS & THE EXPRESSIONS – “IT RAINS LOVE”
Storied soul singer Lee Fields will return with a new single in April, and we wrote more about its title track here.

HAND HABITS – “PLACEHOLDER”
Hand Habits announced their first single for Saddle Creek and shared the lead single (featuring Lomelda), which we wrote more about here.

STEVE GUNN – “VAGABOND” (FT. MEG BAIRD)
Steve Gunn channels Johnny Marr on “Vagabond,” the latest single from his new album The Unseen Inbetween, which is out next week. Those lovely harmonies are courtesy soon-to-be-tourmate Meg Baird.

DEVIL MASTER – “DESPERATE SHADOW”
Blackened Philly punks Devil Master announced their debut album on Relapse Records, and shared the ripping lead single “Desperate Shadow” which we wrote more about here.

THE END OF THE OCEAN – “HOMESICK”
“Homesick” is the latest single off Ohio post-rockers The End of the Ocean’s first album in eight years (and second ever), which we wrote more about here.

GUIDED BY VOICES – “THE RALLY BOYS”
After 100+ albums, how does Robert Pollard still crank out great songs like this? “The Rally Boys” is from GBV’s new double album Zeppelin Over China, one of at least two album from them this year. More here.

MILLENCOLIN – “NOTHING”
Swedish punk vets Millencolin have unleashed a second song off their upcoming album SOS (due 2/15 via Epitaph), and like the title track, this one’s a ripper cut from the same cloth as Millencolin’s classics.

RAT BOY – “DON’T HESITATE”
UK punk/rap artist Rat Boy hooked up with Rancid’s Tim Armstrong (who Rat Boy first discovered via Tim’s punk/rap band The Transplants), who produced his new album INTERNATIONALLY UNKNOWN and is releasing it on January 25 via his Epitaph imprint Hellcat Records (as a joint release with Parlophone). The latest single is “Don’t Hesitate,” and there’s a definite Transplants vibe to this, though Rat Boy gives it his own twist.
