19 New Songs Out Today

Joey Purp
Joey Purp

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

JOEY PURP – “ELASTIC”

Chicago rapper Joey Purp recently released the song “Bag Talk” and announced the title (QUARTHERTHING) and release date (9/7) of his next full-length project, and he since revealed the tracklist and guests (including RZA, GZA, and Ravyn Lenae). Now, a few days before its release, he put out a second single, “Elastic,” which is a different look for Joey. It’s got him rapping over a house beat, and the new direction suits him very well.

FATHER JOHN MISTY – “FALLIN’ RAIN” (LINK WRAY COVER)

This cover of Link Wray’s 1971 single “Fallin’ Rain” was produced by The Haxan Cloak and recorded for Hulu’s creepy, mystery-filled Stephen King series Castle Rock. It plays across a two-minute promo film for the series, which doesn’t contain spoilers if you haven’t watched it but does mirror the show’s ominous vibe.

MEG BAIRD & MARY LATTIMORE – “PAINTER OF TYGERS”

Meg Baird (of Heron Oblivion, the reunited Espers, and more) has teamed with harpist Mary Lattimore for a collaborative album, Ghost Forests, due November 9 via Three Lobed Recordings. The first single is “Painter of Tygers,” which similar to the haunting psych-folk of Meg Baird’s solo career, but with Mary Lattimore’s brilliant harp playing in the mix, it’s even more gorgeous. They’re making their live debut at Hopscotch this weekend and then touring Europe with Kurt Vile.

SYLVAINE – “MORKLAGT”

Oslo’s Sylvaine (aka Katherine Shepard) is releasing her new album Atoms Aligned, Coming Undone on November 2 via Season of Mist and after recently sharing lead single “Abeyance,” she’s now back with a second new track, “Mørklagt.” Musically, the new song carries the weight and depth of post-metal and atmospheric black metal, but her clean, soaring voice has more of a goth/dream pop quality (and she works in some harsh shrieks too). It’s very cool stuff.

ARABROT – WHO DO YOU LOVE (ALBUM STREAM)

Norway’s unpigeonholeable Arabrot is returning this Friday with new album Who Do You Love via Pelagic, and the whole thing is streaming now. The album’s got plenty of the strangely catchy dark pop that Arabrot has become known for, plus a nice dose of harsher, more metallic moments, some pounding industrial rock, and more. It’s one hell of an album.

FRONTPERSON – “YOUNG LOVE”

Long-running solo artist and New Pornographers/Immaculate Machine member Kathryn Calder has a new project, Frontperson, which is a collaboration with Woodpigeon’s Mark Andrew Hamilton. Their debut album Frontrunner comes out September 21 via Kathryn’s own Oscar St. Records, and new single “Young Love” is a tender dose of folk-pop.

IRON REAGAN – “PATRONIZER”

Crossover thrash revivalists Iron Reagan released a split with Gatecreeper on Relapse earlier this year, and now they’re set to release a new EP, Dark Days Ahead, on October 12 via Trapped Under Ice’s Pop Wig Records. Frontman Tony Foresta told Revolver that some of these songs were written during the sessions for 2017’s Crossover Ministry (also on Relapse), and the first single is “Patronizer,” which adds a poppy twist to Iron Reagan’s thrashy sound. Fans of late ’80s Anthrax will probably dig.

THOM YORKE – “SUSPIRIUM”

This is the first single from Thom Yorke’s soundtrack for the upcoming remake of Dario Argento’s Suspiria, and the song incorporates melodic elements of his instrumental score. Read more HERE.

KELE OKEREKE – “NOT THE DRUGS TALKING”

Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke announced he’s been working on a musical titled Leave To Remain, and he’s just shared a song from the upcoming show. According to NME, the musical entails a story of “a young gay couple suddenly faced with an uncertain future, told through a mixture of music, drama and movement.”

METRIC – “NOW OR NEVER NOW”

Canadian trio Metric are gearing up to release their seventh LP Art Of Doubt later this month, and this newest offering from the record is a polished, massive-sounding song that combines synthpop with driving guitars.

POM POKO – “FOLLOW THE LIGHT”

Norwegian four-piece Pom Poko have signed to Bella Union and will release their debut album for the label in early 2019. The announcement comes with their first single for the label, “Follow the Light,” which is riotous, skronky, anthemic and features some lovely harmonies.

BARRIE – “MICHIGAN”

Brooklyn quintet Barrie have released two singles so far this year, and now they’ve shared a third. The dreamy, synthy “Michigan” slots in neatly next to “Canyons” and “Tal Uno”, and the three songs, along with a couple of remixes from FaltyDL and Shura and Brother Michae, will come out as a 12″ vinyl via Winspear on October 12.

MOTHERS – “BEAUTY ROUTINE”

Mothers release their sophomore LP, Render Another Ugly Method, on Friday (9/7) via ANTI-. They’ve shared its opening track, “Beauty Routine,” along with a video directed by Jake Lazovick and Richard Phillip Smith.

YOUNG M.A – “WAHLINN” (ft. KORLEONE)

We’re still patiently awaiting the proper debut album from Young M.A, who’s been on the rise since breaking out two years ago with “OOOUUU.” Still no word on that, but she’s continued to release new singles, like the recent “PettyWap” and now “Wahlinn.” This one’s a little different for her, favoring melodic auto-tune in place of the tough, blunt sound we’ve come to expect from Young M.A.

TYLER, THE CREATOR – “PUFF” and “BUCKET”

Tyler, The Creator has been dropping many standalone singles as of late, and his two newest are actually instrumentals from his 2015 album Cherry Bomb. “PUFF” was taken from “Blow My Load” and “BUCKET” was taken from “2SEATER.”

LANDO CHILL – “DAH VAPOR”

We premiered a new song off LA-via-Chicago rapper Lando Chill’s upcoming LP for Mello Music Group, and wrote more about it HERE.

SAY HI – CATERPILLAR CENTIPEDE (ALBUM STREAM)

Say Hi returns with a new album this Friday. We premiered a stream and wrote more about it HERE.

EZTV – “DAYTIME”

Brooklyn’s jangly EZTV haven’t released a new record in two years, and while they still haven’t announced their third LP, here’s a new single that finds them in fine form. Read more HERE.
