20 New Rap Songs Out This Week

Cousin Stizz

It’s been a pretty huge week for hip hop, with a new Drake compilation; singles and album announcements from Rapsody, Brockhampton, and Cousin Stizz; and other tracks from Rico Nasty, Teyana Taylor, Little Simz, Channel Tres/JPEGMAFIA, Ghostface Killah, Denzel Curry, Alchemist/Schoolboy Q, and more. Read on for all the hip hop we posted on BV this week…

DRAKE – “CARE PACKAGE” COMPILATION
For years, die-hard Drake fans have streamed many of his lesser-known, non-album tracks on Soundcloud, YouTube, or other inconvenient places, but today the rapper dropped Care Package, a compilation of many standalone tracks he’s released over the years, dating back to his Thank Me Later days. Awful album art aside, there’s tons of gems to be found on here.

RAPSODY – “IBTIHAJ”

Rapsody is following 2017’s great Laila’s Wisdom with her third album, Eve, on August 23 via Jamla. Rapsody tells Essence that the album is “my ode to the women in my life who have made me who I am, but at the same time I realize it’s bigger than me,” and it features songs named after Nina Simone, Oprah Winfrey, Aaliyah, Whoopi Goldberg, and Ibtihaj Muhammad. Ibtihaj Muhammad — who became the first Muslim American woman to wear a hijab while competing for the United States in the Olympics — is the inspiration behind the new single “Ibtihaj,” which samples GZA’s “Liquid Swords” and also features GZA, along with D’Angelo who sings lyrics from “Liquid Swords” on this track. It comes with a video directed by Jay Scorsese that pays homage to New York and Muslim women of color and features Roxanne Shanté and Mary J. Blige. You can read more here.

BROCKHAMPTON – “I BEEN BORN AGAIN”

Brockhampton are staying prolific, and planning to release a new album called GINGER this year. The first single is “I Been Born Again,” which has the group’s forward-thinking art rap in excellent form.

RICO NASTY – “WELCOME TO THE PARTY” (remix of POP SMOKE)

Brooklyn rapper Pop Smoke has been going viral thanks to his recent breakout song “Welcome To The Party,” and now Rico Nasty is joining the, uh, party, with her own remix of the song. Rico showed off a more melodic side on her recent single “Time Flies,” but she goes hard on this one.

COUSIN STIZZ – “STP”

Boston rapper Cousin Stizz recently released the City Girls collab “Perfect,” and today he shared the new single “STP” and revealed that both will appear on his new album, Trying to Find My Next Thrill, due August 14 via RCA. (Other guests include Freddie Gibbs, Smino, and more.) Like “Perfect,” “STP” should have no trouble getting your head nodding.

TEYANA TAYLOR – “HWYI?” (ft. KING COMBS)

Teyana Taylor is back with her first single since last year’s K.T.S.E., “HWYI??” (aka “How You Want It?”), and it features King Combs, who is Diddy’s son. It sees her putting a modern update on ’90s R&B/soul, and it’s pretty cool stuff.

LITTLE SIMZ – “FEEL GOOD INC” (GORILLAZ COVER)

UK rapper Little Simz, whose GREY Area is still one of the year’s best rap albums, collaborated with Gorillaz on 2017’s “Garage Palace,” and now she and her band have covered their classic “Feel Good Inc” for triple j’s Like A Version. Like she sometimes does live, Simz played bass in addition to rapping and singing, and she nailed the song’s iconic groove, while also adding in some new lyrics of her own.

CHANNEL TRES – “BLACK MOSES” (ft. JPEGMAFIA)

Channel Tres, who is touring with Toro y Moi this year, is releasing his Black Moses EP on August 16 via GODMODE. He has now shared the dark, bass-heavy title track which effectively pairs Channel Tres with avant-rapper JPEGMAFIA.

GHOSTFACE KILLAH – “PARTY OVER HERE”

Here’s another highly cinematic video from Ghostface, though unlike “Conditioning” which played out like a heist thriller, “Party Over Here” is just a good time. His new solo album, Ghostface Killahs, is out in August.

ALCHEMIST & SCHOOLOBY Q – “W.Y.G.D.T.N.S”

Schoolboy Q is back with a new Alchemist collab, “W.Y.G.D.T.N.S.” (aka “When You Goin Drop That New Shit”), and Alchemist provides a blunted, jazzy beat that Q sounds perfect over.

DAVE EAST – “EVERYDAY (ft. GUNNA) & “WANNA BE A G” (ft. MAX B)

Harlem rapper Dave East is releasing his new album Survival this fall, and he’s previewing the album with two new songs today. The first one finds East as menacing as ever, mixing throwback New York rap with modern-day production, and the second one is more of an R&B slow jam.

MIGOS, LIL YACHTY & GUCCI MANE – “INTRO”

Two more songs are out from the upcoming Quality Control compilation, Quality Control: Control The Streets Volume 2, due August 16 via QC. This one’s got the label’s flagship group, Migos, joined by Lil Yachty and Gucci Mane, and it offers just what you’d expect from a collaboration like that.

24HEAVY & YOUNG THUG – “LONGTIME”

The other new song out from the new Quality Control comp is 24Heavy and Young Thug’s “Longtime.” Both find the middle ground between singing and rapping (in their own ways), and it makes for a more R&B-tinged foil to “Intro.”

CHYNNA – “ASMR”

ASMR continues to be a huge trend and it’s the inspiration for Philly rapper Chynna’s hazy new song. “The asmr shit is just so funny to me. I’ve heard that I had an asmr voice and I’m trying to entertain my fans that are into asmr,” she says.

CASSIE – “ROLLERCOASTER” (ft. RO JAMES)

The great, elusive R&B singer Cassie is back with another Soundcloud drop, “Rollercoaster,” which finds her in fine, atmospheric form.

CESCHI – “YONI’S ELECTROCARDIOGRAPHS” (ft. YONI WOLF of WHY?)

New Haven indie rapper Ceschi has tapped likeminded artist Yoni Wolf of WHY? for a new version of “Electrocardiographs.” You can read more about it here.

VIC MENSA & JESSE – “LET U KNOW”

Chicago rapper Vic Mensa has dabbled in alt-pop before, and he does that again with this new collaboration with Jesse (of The Neighbourhood), which comes a few weeks ahead of their tour together.

DENZEL CURRY – “CLOUT COBAIN” (w/ FUCKED UP) & “I AGAINST I” (w/ BAD BRAINS)

Denzel Curry went above and beyond for his new Spotify Session, tapping Toronto hardcore band Fucked Up to back him on a version of his own “Clout Cobain” and the actual Bad Brains to back him on a cover of Bad Brains’ classic “I Against I.” The whole thing is awesome, and you can read more and hear Denzel and Bad Brains’ Darryl Jenifer in conversation here.
