20 New Songs Out Today
So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…
TIERRA WHACK – “CLONES”
Following last week’s “Only Child,” Philly rapper Tierra Whack returns with her second single since releasing her 2018 breakthrough Whack World. This one goes a little harder than “Only Child” and takes shots at all the people trying to cop Tierra Whack’s flow.

STEALING SHEEP – “SHOW LOVE”
Stealing Sheep have shared a second single from their upcoming third album, Big Wows. “Show Love” is the opening cut to the album and rides along a percolating wave of steel drum, while the video, made by animator Gyuri Lee, takes the Liverpool trio into very psychedelic territory. “We heard about Gyuri through our friend Ewan Jones Morris, who recently worked with her on a video for John Grant’s ‘He’s Got His Mother’s Hips’ and we loved her acid color schemes and her surreal stream of consciousness style,” the band say. “We’ve been collaborating with lots of women on this new album and we want a strong female energy in the music and visuals, so finding a female director for this was really important.” They also add, “check us out riding a pink fluffy sheep into space.”

WAND – “THIN AIR”
LA band Wand, who haven’t fit the garage-psych pigeonhole for a few years now, will release new double album Laughing Matter on April 19. This is the second single from the record, digging into proggy repetition and ethereal melodies before Cory Hanson rips open some serious guitar pyrotechnics.

ROLLING BLACKOUTS COASTAL FEVER – “IN THE CAPITAL”
Australia’s Rolling Blackout Coastal Fever will follow up last year’s terrific Hope Downs with new single “In the Capital” on April 27. They continue to make a great case for jangly indie rock, with a soaring chorus and some nice VU/Television-style guitar interplay.

DEVIL MASTER – “HER THIRSTY WHIP”
Devil Master’s anticipated Relapse debut Satan Spits on Children of Light is out this week, and they’ve got one more single ahead of its release. Like the other pre-release singles, “Her Thirsty Whip” is a raw, lo-fi mix of black metal and punk, but with a bright melodic side fighting its way through. It’s filthy, but it’s also fun.

EMILY REO – “GHOSTING”
Brooklyn’s Emily Reo releases a new album, Only You Can See It, on April 12 via Carpark Records. She follows first single “Strawberry” with “Ghosting,” which she says is her “personal favorite song” from the album. “‘Ghosting’ was written during a time when I felt completely incapacitated by my own mind,” Emily writes. “My struggles with mental illness had reached an all time high, which resulted in me being too afraid to do anything. I more or less trapped myself inside the fabricated safety of my bedroom and stopped living my life. To me, ‘Ghosting’ represents the purgatorial space between being alive and living. If you’re not deriving pleasure from anything, participating in experiences or able to break out of the cycle of going through the motions it can feel like there’s a disconnection between your mind and body. ‘Ghosting’ explores what beyond a beating heart is necessary for living.”

BIG EYES – “LUCKY YOU”
Brooklyn punks Big Eyes are releasing their new album Streets of the Lost on April 5 via Greenway Records, and lead single “Lucky You” is out now. Big Eyes have always had a classic rock side to their melodic punk, but this one injects an even stronger dose of Thin Lizzy than usual. It’s catchy stuff.

HATCHIE – “WITHOUT A BLUSH”
Australian dream pop artist Harriette Pilbeam has announced her debut LP as Hatchie, Keepsake, due out June 21 via Double Double Whammy. About first single “Without a Blush,” Harriette says, “I’m excited to start the next chapter of Hatchie with Without A Blush…it’s the perfect introduction to the feelings & sounds on the rest of the record.”

CONTROL TOP – “CHAIN REACTION”
Buzzy post-punk newcomers Control Top, who are touring with Laura Jane Grace soon, are releasing their debut album Covert Contracts on April 5 via Get Better Records. It includes 2018 single “Type A” as well as the just-released “Chain Reaction.” This one sees them adding a little classic ’70s-style punk into their jittery post-punk, and it’s a nice mix of melody, danceability, and aggression.

EX HEX – “RAINBOW SHINER”
Ex Hex have unleashed another track from their upcoming sophomore album It’s Real (due 3/22 via Merge). As you’d expect from Ex Hex, it’s a strutting, swaggering dose of glammed-up punk, and it rips.

MOUNTAIN MAN – “TAKE ME HOME, COUNTRY ROADS,” “AROUND & AROUND” (JOHN DENVER COVERS)
Folk trio Mountain Man released their first album in eight years, Magic Ship, last year, and ahead of their upcoming tour they’ve announced a new single, Mountain Man sings John Denver, due out on 7″ vinyl on June 7 via Nonesuch. “”We love John Denver so much we gave Alex his haircut, and recorded a few of his legendary tunes too,” the band says. “Have a listen! They are so sooooothing, we promise.”

DEATH AND VANILLA – “A FLAW IN THE IRIS”
Swedish band Death and Vanilla, whose brand of baroque psych is not unlike that of Broadcast, are back with new album Are You A Dreamer? that’s out May 10 via Fire Records. They’ve shared the album’s woozy album opener that is both beautiful and unsettling.

THE DRUMS – “626 BEDFORD AVENUE”
“626 Bedford Avenue / I think I regret that night of kissing you,’ begins the new Drums single that drops in pin in South Williamsburg, and is another of their very catchy indiepop melodies, detailing bad decisions and repeat offences, with just a little bit of old Smiths flair. It’s from The Drums new album, Brutalism, that’s out April 5.

JUSTUS PROFFIT – “SHADOW OF THE CROSS”
LA singer/songwriter Justus Proffit is set to release his debut full length album, L.A.’s Got Me Down, on March 8 via Bar/None. “Shadow of the Cross,” its most recent single, is about moving past grief. “This song is about dealing with the death of my past girlfriend,” Justus says. “It’s weird because it’s been about 3 and a half years…all those feelings were strong at the time but as things move on, it’s such a strange sensation of emptiness. It’s not as tangible as it once was and it never will be.”

BIG THIEF – “UFOF”
Big Thief signed to 4AD and they’re releasing their first album for the label, U.F.O.F., on May 3. We wrote more about the title track here.

MORRISSEY – “IT’S OVER” (ROY ORBISON COVER ft LP)
Morrissey’s new album isn’t just a covers record, it also features a bunch of duets, with the likes of Billie Joe Armstrong, Ed Droste and Petra Haden. This cover of the Roy Orbison classic features singer-songwriter LP, who is the first voice you hear and then provides otherworldly backing vocals. Read more here.

FURY – “ANGELS OVER BERLIN”
Orange County hardcore crew Fury signed to Run For Cover last year, and now they’ve announced their first album for the label. It’s called Failed Entertainment and it comes out May 3. The first single is “Angels Over Berlin,” which doesn’t sacrifice the hardcore attack of 2016’s Paramount one bit, but adds in just a bit more of a melodic side. Read more here.

BAD RELIGION – “CHAOS FROM WITHIN”
Bad Religion have announced their 17th album, Age of Unreason (due 5/3 via Epitaph), and released the new single “Chaos From Within.” “Throughout history, walls have been used to keep the barbarians out, but it seems to me the truly barbaric aspect of a civilization is the chaos that comes from within,” singer Greg Graffin says.

MOON KING – “NEON LIGHTS”
Moon King used to be a shoegazey indie rock band but have transformed into a ’80s/’90s dancepop sound, as heard on the first single from their new LP.
