20 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

LEE “SCRATCH” PERRY – RAINFORD (ALBUM STREAM)

Dub reggae icon is back with new album Rainford that has paired him with past collaborator and fellow dubmaster Adrian Sherwood. “It’s the most intimate album Lee has ever made, but at the same time the musical ideas are very fresh,” says Sherwood. “I’m extremely proud of what we’ve come up with as a piece of work.” Stream the whole thing via NPR and check out “House of Angels” here:

OPEN MIKE EAGLE & METHOD MAN – “EAT YOUR FEELINGS”

Each episode of Open Mike Eagle and Baron Vaughn’s Comedy Central show The New Negroes features a series of stand-up comedians and then ends with an original song/video by Open Mike Eagle and a new guest artist each week. This week’s episode features “Eat Your Feelings” with Method Man and a satiric video directed by Lance Bangs, where a dinner party serves up coveted luxury items rather than food.

MIYA FOLICK – “MALIBU BARBIE”

Like “Eat Your Feelings,” Miya Folick’s new single, her first since the release of her 2018 album Premonitions, also tackles materialism. “‘Malibu Barbie’ is about my exploration of what being a woman means to me—it’s a longing for an ideal,” Miya says. “It’s realizing that I can go to an extreme in pursuit of physical perfection, look around, and realize that I haven’t changed. I am still longing and seeking something more. Who I am is not a place at which I can arrive.”

OUTER SPACES – “ALBUM FOR GHOSTS”

Cara Beth Satalino’s project Outer Spaces release their album Gazing Globe on June 28 and here’s another song from it. “Album for Ghosts” starts off spare and just a little twangy, but then opens up wide with Satalino’s harmonies leading the charge. Lovely.

SERATONES – “GOTTA GET TO KNOW YA”

Shreveport, Louisiana’s Seratones — fueled by the powerful pipes of gospel-trained frontwoman A.J. Haynes — have announced their new album, Power, which is out August 23 on New West. The album was produced by Cage The Elephant’s Bradley Shultz and their brand of fuzzed out garage-soul sounds potent on first single “Gotta Get To Know Ya.”

GOMEZ – “THROWIN’ MYSELF AWAY” (DEMO)

UK band Gomez are releasing a 20th anniversary edition of their album Liquid Skin that comes with nine previously unreleased tracks. Here’s one of them, the demo of “Throwin’ Myself Away.”

CRUEL HAND – “NEVER BE WHOLE”

Maine hardcore band Cruel Hand have released their first new song in three years, “Never Be Whole.” It’s coming out as a 7″ on the band’s own Cheap Life Records, with a live version of “Under the Ice” from 2007’s Without A Pulse as the b-side.

MINI MANSIONS – “BAD THINGS (THAT MAKE YOU FEEL GOOD)”

“You’re invited to possibly the most awkward listening party to date,” says Mini Mansions’ singer Michael Shuman of the band’s new video. “Sit down, relax, and get uncomfortable with us guys while we listen to our new track. We’ll laugh, we’ll cry, we’ll turn it up loud.” The “Bad Things” video was directed by Liam Lynch (who created cult MTV series Sifl & Olly) and the song is from Mini Mansions’ forthcoming album, Guy Walks Into A Bar…

THE APPLESEED CAST – “TIME THE DESTROYER”

The first single from The Appleseed Cast’s new album is a surging, slow-build of a track powered by layers of keyboards, strings, and other instruments until the guitars come crashing in.

THE GOTOBEDS – DEBT BEGINS AT 30 (ALBUM STREAM)

Pittsburgh’s The Gotobeds’ envisioned their new album as a punk/indie rock equivalent of a trap mixtape, with guests on ever song. The album features appearances from members of Pavement, Protomartyr, Mission of Burma, Silkworm and more. Stream the whole thing here and read our Q&A with the band.

BILL CALLAHAN – SHEPHERD IN A SHEEPSKIN VEST SIDE 1

Bill Callahan will release Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest, his first album in six years, on June 14. It’s a 20 song double album and Bill has shared its whole first side, six songs: “Shepherd’s Welcome,” “Black Dog on the Beach”, “Angela,” “The Ballad of The Hulk,” Writing,” and “Morning is My Godmother.” It’s good to have that voice back!

GAAHLS WYRD – GASTIR – GHOSTS INVITED (ALBUM STREAM)

The infamous black metal veteran Gaahl (Gorgoroth, Wardruna) already streamed the first two songs off GastiR – Ghosts Invited, the new album from his Gaahls WYRD project. It’s due out May 31 via Season of Mist, but you can stream the whole thing now ahead of that.

YOUNG THUG – “THE LONDON” (FEAT. J. COLE & TRAVIS SCOTT)

T-Minus produced this new single, teased on flyers at Rolling Loud Miami, a joint effort from Young Thug, J. Cole and Travis Scott.

VELVET NEGRONI – “CONFETTI”

The first single off Velvet Negroni’s debut LP for 4AD, Neon Brown, is woozy R&B adorned with horns, and we wrote more about it here.

KIM PETRAS – “ALL I DO IS CRY”

Rising pop artist Kim Petras continues her ongoing series of singles with the more melancholy “All I Do Is Cry.” Kim told Huffington Post, “‘All I Do Is Cry’ is actually the first single I wrote on tour and felt really right for this moment. I’ve just become more comfortable talking about being sad. Being born and raised in Germany, we’re always taught to not show our emotions. But I discovered that sad songs can be really fun, too. Before I always wanted music to distract me from my real-life problems, but now I’m just confident enough to be whiny and really go through it on a song.”

KNOCKED LOOSE – “…AND STILL I WANDER SOUTH”

Kentucky hardcore crew Knocked Loose announced their new album A Different Shade of Blue and shared mosh-ready first single “…And Still I Wander South,” which we wrote more about here.

SONIC YOUTH – “BULL IN THE HEATHER” (LIVE AT BATTERY PARK)

Originally released as a bonus item for fans who preordered Sonic Youth’s 2009 album The Eternal, Battery Park, NYC: July 4, 2008, is coming out as a stand-alone album and will hit streaming services for the first time ever.
