20 New Songs Out Today

prince

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

THE FLAMING LIPS – “RACE FOR THE PRIZE” (LIVE)

The Flaming Lips’ fantastic 1999 album The Soft Bulletin turned 20 this year and to celebrate they’re releasing a live album of their 2016 performance of the album at Red Rocks with the Colorado Symphony that included a 68-piece orchestra and a 57-person choir. That’ll be out November 15 via Warner Brothers and here is the Red Rocks’ version of the album’s anthemic lead single, “Race for the Prize.”

PRINCE – “I FEEL FOR YOU” (ACOUSTIC DEMO)

In honor of the 40th anniversary of Prince’s second album, Prince — which was released on October 19, 1979 — the Prince Estate and Warner Records have released a previously unheard, solo acoustic demo recording of  “I Feel for You,” which would later become a 1984 hit for Chaka Khan. JADAKISS – “ME”

Jadakiss, who is a guest judge on the NYC episode of Rhythm + Flow, dropped a new single today called “Me,” which kinds Kiss asking questions like “who’s the most consistent?” and “who the girls love?” and the answer, of course, is “Me.” In other words, it’s a Jadakiss song.

DIDO – “WHITE FLAG” (NEW ACOUSTIC VERSION)

Earlier this year, Dido released a new album and went on her first tour in 15 years, and today she put out a deluxe edition of the album which includes a new acoustic version of her classic “White Flag.” She’s also got a live session video for that song, and it looks and sounds great.

JEFF ROSENSTOCK – “AMBIENT 7″

Jeff Rosenstock (whose great new live album Hello, Sorry! is out today) released this 7-minute ambient piece which is a strong departure from his usual rowdy shout-punk style, but echoes the synth-led section on his song “USA” from last year’s POST-.

WIKI – “FEE FI FO FUM” / “SMARTY JONES” (FEAT. CLEO REED)

Following the release of the Madlib-produced “Eggs” last month, and “Cheat Codes” earlier this year, Wiki is continuing to show off his creative production choices with these new singles. The first is the spacey “Fee Fi Fo Fum,” which shows Wiki rhyming over a hard-hitting, disorienting trap beat from Tony Seltzer. He then enlists fellow NYC artist Cleo Reed for the glitchy, psychedelic “Smarty Jones,” whose off-kilter, vibrant instrumental sounds as if it was pulled from the Ninja Tune roster.

MIYA FOLICK – “I WILL FOLLOW YOU INTO THE DARK”

John Green YA novel Looking for Alaska has been made into a limited Hulu series, which premiered today. Its soundtrack is also out, and it’s heavy on the mid-2000’s nostalgia. Alongside tracks from Bloc Party, The Strokes, Rilo Kiley, Modest Mouse, and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah are covers over classic songs from the era, including this Miya Folick take on Death Cab’s beloved ballad.

GRISELDA – “DR. BIRD’S”

The Griselda Records crew (Benny the Butcher, Conway the Machine, Westside Gunn, and producer Daringer) have put their heads together for a new single, and it’s exactly the kind of psychedelic, throwback rap you expect from these guys.

CASS MCCOMBS – “CONFIDENCE MAN”

Cass McCombs released the solid Tip of the Sphere earlier this year, and he also dropped a deluxe edition of the LP, dubbed the “Tippy Top Edition” (available only on vinyl), which contains three new songs, including the smoky “Confidence Man.” The song, which hit streaming today, is accompanied by a black-and-white video featuring clips from filmmakers Bresson and Fuller, which adds to the song’s mysterious atmosphere.

ISOBEL CAMPBELL – “RUNNIN DOWN A DREAM” (TOM PETTY COVER)

Former Belle & Sebastian member Isobel Campbell is releasing There is No Other, her first solo album in 13 years, in January and she’s just shared another song from, which is a cover of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ “Runnin’ Down a Dream.” It’s a pretty faithful take on the song, but there’s a little krautrock drone running down this dream, too.

ROSE ELINOR DOUGALL – “NATURAL STATE”

Rose Elinor Dougall has shared a new song, “Natural State,” that originated with the sessions to her album from earlier this year, A New Illusion, but the song, with its themes of global chaos, didn’t quite fit. “I wanted to make something propulsive and rhythmically focused, with simple repeating melodic motifs which slowly expand and evolve,” says Rose. “I was lucky enough to meet Adam Curtis whilst i was working on my album, and he explained to me that throughout human history, chaos and destruction have always been the prevailing atmosphere of our existence, and that occasional periods of stability are actually the abnormal state for society to be in. But he also reminded me that somehow we always prevail and we shouldn’t be afraid of these major shifts as this is how change and growth happens. Although in someways this notion makes the idea of trying to fight against all of these negative forces seem futile, i think it is actually a heartening concept to help embolden a way through this particular moment, when everything feels like it’s falling apart. I guess this song is an attempt to fight against the idea that it’s pointless to harness ones anger and fear and attempt to make something out of it. This song feels more pertinent to me than ever, i could never have imagined the kind of crisis we find ourselves in now when i started writing.”

MAYHEM – “FALSIFIED AND HATED”

Norwegian black metal legends Mayhem, whose members (Necrobutcher included) were just in NYC this week for a listening party and signing (check out a couple of photos here), and who were just announced for the 2020 Philly edition of Decibel Metal & Beer Fest, have debuted another single off their upcoming album Daemon. It’s called “Falsified and Hated,” and it’s another helping of whiplash-inducing fury, but with a murky, slowed-down section that sounds like it was recorded somewhere in the swamps of the underworld.

SODOM – “DOWN ON YOUR KNEES”

German thrash legends Sodom are back with a new band lineup and a new EP. Longtime leader Tom Angelripper has welcomed ’80s-era guitarist Frank Blackfire (who played on Persecution Mania and Agent Orange) back into the band, and they now also have Stefan “Husky” Hüskens (Asphyx, Desaster) on drums and Yorck Segatz (Beyondition) on guitar. The new lineup will release Out of the Frontline Trench on November 22nd via eOne in North America and SPV/Steamhammer in Europe, and it features three new songs as well as a new re-recording of Agent Orange‘s title track and a 2018 live version of “Bombenhagel” from Persecution Mania. The first new song released is “Down On Your Knees,” a real ripper that isn’t just good for a veteran band but good in general.
