20 New Songs Out Today
So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…
ROC MARCIANO – “RICHARD GEAR”
New York rapper Roc Marciano remains incredibly prolific, and his music remains throwback yet timeless. He recently dropped his new album Marcielago (featuring Ka, Westside Gunn, Willie The Kid, Knowledge The Pirate, and Cook$) as a $30 download on his website, and he gave the video treatment to “Richard Gear.”

THE PROFESSIONALS (OH NO & MADLIB) – “SUPERHUMANS” (ft. ELZHI & CHINO XL)
Madlib and his brother Oh No have released music as The Professionals as far back as 2008, but they’re just now gearing up to release their first full-length album under the name on January 17 via Madlib Invazion. It’s self-titled and the first single is “Superhumans,” which features Elzhi and Chino XL and is a very fine dose of underground rap.

LIDO PIMIENTA – “NO PUDE”
Toronto-based artist Lido Pimienta has just released her first single since her 2016 Polaris Prize-winning album La Papessa. “No pude means: I could not. In the context of the song it means something to the effect of, ‘I am tired of trying’,” Pimienta says. “The words speak directly to the sense of dread and constant anxiety my home country gives me. ‘No Pude’ sums up the love / hate relationship I have with Colombia. I hold Colombia close to my heart and my soul, but that loves turns into rage and shame as fast as a match takes to burn.” Check it out via the striking video directed by Fitto Segura.

DUSTER – “LETTING GO”
Duster’s first album in 20 years is out next week and here’s a second sneak peak before the whole thing drops. “Letting Go” is dreamy bummer pop, with guitar chords that fall slowly like sighs.

REGINA SPEKTOR – “ONE LITTLE SOLDIER”
Regina Spektor’s last album was 2016’s Remember Us To Life, but she’s released a few songs since then, the latest of which is “One Little Soldier” from the soundtrack to Bombshell, which stars Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, and Margot Robbie and begins screening on December 13.

RICHARD ASHCROFT – “HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS”
Former The Verve frontman Richard Ashcroft offers up his take on this holiday standard, taking it into cocktail jazz territory.

HAIM – “SHOW ME LOVE” (ROBYN COVER)
Along with their new ballad “Hallelujah,” Haim performed this piano-based cover of Robyn’s nineties hit “Show Me Love” on a recent appearance on Phil Taggart’s Chillest Show on BBC Radio 1. Este takes lead vocals but the high points come when her sisters chime in for three-part harmonies.

ROSE ELINOR DOUGALL – “HOW LONG”
Here’s another song from Rose Elinor Dougall’s New Illusion sessions that didn’t make the album. “How Long” swirls with ethereal guitar figures as her voice soars atop. Rose says it’s “about the struggle between searching for renewal whilst being pulled back into tired cyclical patterns. About longing for the new whilst the old still has a hold over you. About trying to find courage to begin again.”

ALICE BAG BAND – “NO GIFTS FOR NAZIS”
Punk pioneer Alice Bag takes on fascism and gets in the holiday spirit with this politically-charged instant classic.

MICA LEVI – “HOSTING” / DUVAL TIMOTHY – “DYE”
Mica Levi is an in-demand composer these days, spending more time working on film scores than indie rock. Here’s a track from a split EP with fellow composer Duval Timothy. Both songs have pizzicato strings, but where Mica’s “Hosting” is a baroque composition, Timonthy’s “DYE” mixes in track has a baroque feel with pizzicato strings, while Duvall’s track also works in guitar squall and R&B flavors.

RACHEL FANNAN – “WISH I WAS”
Former Sleepy Sun member (and current Black Mountain member) Rachel Fannan is gearing up to release new album Marigold Experiment. That record doesn’t have a release date yet but here’s woozy R&B ballad “Wish I Was,” produced by Alec Justice, to tide you over.

SCOUR (PHIL ANSELMO) – “MASSACRE” (BATHORY COVER)
Phil Anselmo’s black metal band Scour (also featuring members of Pig Destroyer, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Misery Index, and more) are planning to release their third EP, Black in 2020, and in the meantime they shared this absolutely filthy cover of Bathory’s “Massacre.”

OZUNA – “PATEK” (ft. ANUEL AA & SNOOP DOGG)
On Black Friday, fast-rising reggaeton star Ozuna followed a string of 2019 singles with his new album Nibiru. One of its tracks, “Patek,” sees Ozuna teaming up with fellow crossover urbano artist Anuel AA, plus Snoop Dogg, making for a melting pot of modern-day Latin hip hop and Snoop’s classic West Coast vibe. Other guests on the album include Swae Lee, Nicky Jam, Diddy, DJ Snake, Sech, and more.

CROSS CONTROL – OUTRAGE CULTURE (EP STREAM)
Cross Control is a new LA hardcore band fronted by Vince Averill (who ran the short-lived Michigan label Abiology Records in the ’90s that released the legendary Ottawa/Jihad split, and now hosts a wrestling podcast — you can read more about him in a recent No Echo interview), and who also count No Bragging Rights drummer Martin Alcedo as a member. They recently signed to New Age Records and put out their first EP for the label, Outrage Culture, yesterday. It’s six tracks of no-frills, pissed-off hardcore, and it rips from start to finish.

FIRM STANDING LAW (mem COLD WORLD) – UNASHAMED (EP STREAM)
Cold World have been relatively quiet lately, but frontman Dan Mills is now also busy with his new band Firm Standing Law, and their new EP Unashamed dropped over the long weekend. It’s a little more straightforward than Cold World, but it’s no less killer.

MACH-HOMMY – “CLOUT DRACULA” (ft. NAVY BLUE, YOUNGQUEENZ & TVOY)
Mach-Hommy has been one of the most talked-about names in abstract rap this year (thanks in part to collaborations with Earl Sweatshirt), and he returned over the weekend with this dizzying new single.

SAY HI – “OBSIDIAN OBLIVION”
Another week, another new single from Say Hi’s upcoming album Diamonds & Donuts. This one’s a dose of driving synth-rock, and it’s the most immediately catchy single from this album yet.

MONO & A.A. WILLIAMS – “EXIT IN DARKNESS”
Japanese post-rock greats MONO and the very promising dream-folk singer A.A. Williams have teamed for a collaborative single, which you can read more about here.

GRIMES – “MY NAME IS DARK”
In case you missed it over the long weekend, Grimes released another song from her upcoming album Miss_Anthropocene.

KACEY MUSGRAVES – “I’LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS” (ft. LANA DEL REY)
In case you missed it over the long weekend, Kacey Musgraves released her Christmas special and accompanying soundtrack album, and one of the best parts is her cover of the classic “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” with help from Lana Del Rey.
