20 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

PEARL JAM – “DANCE OF THE CLAIRVOYANTS”

Pearl Jam have shared the first single off their upcoming album Gigaton, “Dance of the Clairvoyants,” and it’s… a dancey, ’80s-sounding song with a lot of Talking Heads influence?

RICO NASTY – “IDGAF”

You might think a Rico Nasty song called “IDGAF” would be on her beastly aggressive side, but actually she channels her sugary, auto-tuned pop side on this one, and she’s great at that kind of thing too.

LEYA – “WAVE”

One day after announcing a tour with Liturgy, harp/violin duo LEYA have shared the second single off their upcoming album Flood Dream (due 3/6 via NNA Tapes), the eerie, dramatic “Wave.”

CINDY LEE – “I WANT YOU TO SUFFER”

Cindy Lee, aka Patrick Flegel formerly of Canadian group Women, will release anticipated new album, What’s Tonight To Eternity, on Valentine’s Day and here’s a new single from it that juxtaposes baroque psych beauty with horror-level noise. You’ll go there and back again across its seven minutes.

TOPS – “I FEEL ALIVE”

Montreal’s TOPS are back with I Feel Alive, their first album in three years, which will be out April 3 via their own Musique TOPS label. “We’d spent a lot of time apart, not working on new stuff or touring, just living life, all in different cities,” says frontwoman Jane Penny. “When we went to make I Feel Alive we all had a good sense of what we were trying to do and a renewed energy towards playing together. The goal was to get in a room together and play, not holding anything back.” The first single is also the title track and continues in the TOPS’ signature breezy, soft rock style.

ALEX THE ASTRONAUT – “I THINK YOU’RE GREAT”

Australian musician and songwriter Alex the Astronaut signed to Nettwerk with the release of this earnest new single, which follows her 2019 track “I Like To Dance.”

DUNGEN – “B1”

As good as Swedish band Dungen’s records are, they don’t come close to capturing the sweeping, jazzy psych-rock magic that the band brings to their live shows. But here’s Live, which the band recorded in 2015 at a pair of November shows at at Stora Teatern in Gothenburg and Victoriateatern in Malmö. (They were quite good that year.) Here’s the crashing, soaring first track on side two. The album’s out March 13 via Mexican Summer.

WORRIERS – “TERRIBLE BOYFRIEND”

Worriers have shared the second single off their upcoming album You or Someone You Know (due 3/6 via 6131), and it’s an introspective yet anthemic song that singer Lauren Denitzio calls “my sad song about realizing I don’t really do well at all in traditional romantic relationship.”

CHOICE TO MAKE – “JUNE”

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre hardcore band Choice To Make (mem One Step Closer, Worn, Strength for a Reason) have offered up a second taste of their upcoming Vicious Existence EP (due 2/14 via Flatspot Records), and it starts out as a high-speed ripper before ending up as something slower and more metallic.

BRANT BJORK – “JUNGLE IN THE SOUND”

Brant Bjork (Kyuss, Fu Manchu, etc) is releasing a new self-titled solo album on April 10 May 8 via Heavy Psych Sounds, and new single “Jungle in the Sound” is exactly the kind of riffy stoner rock that Brant has reliably delivered for decades.

M WARD – “UNREAL CITY”

M Ward’s new album, Migration Stories, was made in Montreal with Arcade Fire’s Tim Kingsbury and Richard Reed Perry, and will be out April 3. “Unreal City” does have a bit of an unreal (or surreal) vibe, thanks to otherworldly synths, but M Ward’s voice keeps things nicely grounded.

MARY LATTIMORE – “POLLY OF THE CIRCUS”

“The song was made after I saw a doc called Dawson City Frozen Time, scored by my friend Alex Somers,” says harpist and composer Mary Lattimore of this wonderful, woozy track that’s the latest entry in the Adult Swim Singles series. “Polly of the Circus was the name of one of the old silent films discovered in permafrost in the Yukon, featured in the movie, the only copy that survived and it kind of warped in the aging process. I created a little song based on the film in the film.”

STEPHEN MALKMUS – “XIAN MAN”

Stephen Malkmus is releasing his “folkie” and “stoner feel” new album Traditional Techniques, on March 6 via Matador. He made the record with his old pal/former Matador labelmate Matt Sweeney (of Chavez, Zwan, etc) and The Decemberists’ Chris Funk. Get a taste for that folkie feel with this first released track.

ENDLESS BOOGIE – “JEROME” (FT. STEPHEN MALKMUS & MATT SWEENEY)

If you need more Malkmus and Sweeney, they both trade licks on Endless Boogie’s new single.

HAYLEY WILLIAMS – “SIMMER”

BONNY LIGHT HORSEMAN – “BRIGHT MORNING STARS” (FT. JUSTIN VERNON)

WAXAHATCHEE – “FIRE”

ACTIVITY – “CALLS YOUR NAME”

Activity are a new Brooklyn band featuring members of Grooms, Russian Baths and Field Mouse. Here’s the eerie first single from their upcoming debut album.

YUMI ZOUMA – “COOL FOR A SECOND”
