20 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

WEEZER – “CAN’T KNOCK THE HUSTLE”

Weezer’s next color album The Black Album is due out in 2019 via Crush Music/Atlantic, and lead single “Can’t Knock The Hustle” is out now. Usually their color albums are meant as a “return to form,” but the only thing “Can’t Knock The Hustle” is a return to is the awkward hip hop appropriation of Raditude. (It might be worth noting that both “Can’t Knock The Hustle” and The Black Album are names Jay-Z thought of first.) The song was produced by Dave Sitek, the video was produced by Jerry Media (which was founded by the person behind the @fuckjerry meme account), and the video stars Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz. Sure, the whole thing seems pretty ambitious, but in this case, maybe you can knock the hustle.

PHONY PPL – MOZAIK (ALBUM STREAM)

NYC band Phony Ppl say their genre is “noGENRE,” and it’s easy to see why from listening to their new album mō’zā-ik, which is part neo-soul, part rock, part hip hop, part funk, part jazz, and more, without ever sounding like an awkward mix of styles. It’s really good, and you can now stream it on NPR ahead of its October 19 release. Also, catch them on tour with Pusha T soon.

WILLIE NELSON – “VOTE ‘EM OUT”

Outlaw country legend and activist Willie Nelson debuted his political new song “Vote ‘Em Out” at a rally for Beto O’Rourke in Austin last month, and now he released a recording of the song. “If you don’t like who’s in there, vote ’em out,” goes the refrain.

THOM YORKE – “VOLK” (FROM SUSPIRIA)

Can hearing the soundtrack to a film before seeing it be a spoiler? Maybe. Listening to “Volk,” there’s little doubt that Thom Yorke’s eerie score to the upcoming Suspiria remake sets an unsettling tone for the film. The soundtrack and film are out October 26.

LAURA JANE GRACE & THE DEVOURING MOTHERS – “THE AIRPLANE SONG”

Against Me! singer Laura Jane Grace shared a second single off her upcoming solo album Brought To Rot, and like the lead single, “The Airplane Song” is folky but not the way AM!’s early folk punk stuff was. It’s like a toned down version of the recent AM! material, and it’s keeping our anticipation for this album high.

BAD BUNNY FEAT. DRAKE – “MIA”

Puerto Rican trap star Bad Bunny has had an impressive 2018, thanks in part to his guest spot on Cardi B’s “I Like It.” Now, he’s just dropped a collaborative track with another rap megastar, Drake, who raps the song’s intro and chorus entirely in Spanish. It’s catchy, infectious stuff.

INTERPOL – “THE ROVER” (DJDS REMIX)

Interpol has teamed with electronic production duo DJDS for a remix of the band’s lead single from Marauder, “The Rover.” The song features Paul Banks’ vocals over a club-ready beat, and if you felt the original version wasn’t groovy enough, this remix might be for you.

KLAUS JOHANN GROBE – “OUT OF REACH”

After two very different first tastes of their forthcoming Du bist so Symmetrisch, Swiss duo Klaus Johann Grobe let loose the best song on the album, “Out of Reach,” a krautrock disco jammer with popping bass, weird synths and even some English lyrics. It’s the hit. The video, meanwhile, features unicycles, dudes in luchador masks, Mummenschanz-looking figures and other cool, weird stuff.

SOCCER MOMMY – “WIDE OPEN SPACES” (DIXIE CHICKS COVER)

Soccer Mommy has put her spin on the Dixie Chicks’ “Wide Open Spaces.” According to NPR, she says the track’s themes of relocation resonated with her growing up, saying, “It’s relatable to any girl who’s moved away from home and had to start a new life somewhere.” Soccer Mommy’s version is slightly slower and more reflective, blending her lo-fi sound with the emotional impact of the original.

SPEEDY ORTIZ – “DTMFA”

In the wake of Trump’s election as president, Speedy Ortiz abandoned much of the material they’d written for Twerp Verse and re-recorded the album. Their new Adult Swim single, “DTMFA,” is one of the songs they jettisoned, and its title is a Dan Savage-coined acronym, “dump the motherfucker already.”

FLESH EATERS – “CINDERELLA” (SONICS COVER)

The Flesh Eaters, the L.A. supergroup featuring John Doe & DJ Bonebrake of X, plus Dave Alvin & Bill Bateman of The Blasters, Steve Berlin of Los Lobos, and frontman Chris D, are getting set to release new album I Used To Be Pretty, which will be their first in 35 years. Check out the first single, a revved-up take on The Sonics’ “Cinderella.”

AMY RIGBY – “TOM PETTY KARAOKE”

Like a lot of us, great New York singer-songwriter Amy Rigby is missing Tom Petty and, after watching a viral video of Dinosaur Jr’s J. Mascis doing “Don’t Do Me Like That” at karaoke, she was inspired to write this very good song.

COMO ASESINAR A FELIPES – “DISPARAN (FILL THE SKIES)” (ft. DEFTONES’ CHINO MORENO)

Como Asesinar a Felipes are a Chilean group who aim to mix jazz, rock, and rap, and the latest taste of their genre-defying sound is “Disparan (Fill The Skies),” which has guest vocals from Deftones frontman Chino Moreno. It’s wild and all over the place — in a good way.

AMERICAN PLEASURE CLUB – “ORANGES”

American Pleasure Club (fka Teen Suicide) are releasing a new 7″ single on Run For Cover Records on November, and they’ve shared its a-side, the pleasantly hazy “Oranges.” Songwriter Sam Ray says it’s a song he’s “loved for years & have been dying to share!”

FRIGS – “CROP CIRCLES”

Having released their debut album earlier this year, Toronto’s Frigs have just shared a new song, the creepy and creeping “Crop Circles.” Despite the dark moody vibe of the song, singer Bria Salmena says, “Crop Circles is a song about feeling good about yourself,” adding, “I wrote the lyrics when I was moving away from someone who only put me down and didn’t support my creative pursuits. The song lives solely in this recording. It was never intended to be performed.”

RUN THE JEWELS – “LET’S GO (THE ROYAL WE)”

There’s a new Run The Jewels song out in the world and we wrote more about it here.

BODEGA BAMZ – NC-17 (EP STREAM)

The consistently solid New York rapper Bodega Bamz just returned with four new tracks in the form of the NC-17 EP. The first three are the kinds of threatening New York rap throwbacks that Bamz always excels at, while EP closer “Arcadia” is a bit slower and more fit for modern-day rap radio. All four are worth hearing.

LIL SILVA & CAUTIOUS CLAY – “ALWAYS WONDER”

Two rising alt-pop crooners, Lil Silva and Cautious Clay, teamed up for the syrupy smooth downtempo pop of “Always Wonder.”

BRENDAN KELLY AND THE WANDERING BIRDS – “SHITTY MARGARITA”

“Shitty Margarita” is the lead single off Lawrence Arms co-frontman Brendan Kelly’s new Wandering Birds album, which we wrote more about here.

SZUN WAVES – “NEW HYMN TO FREEDOM”

Yesterday we posted a new Hookworms remix by Luke Abbott, which reminded us that the English electronic producer also released a new album with his newish experimental psych-jazz trio Szun Waves this year. New Hymn To Freedom is a worthwhile listen we have yet to mention on these pages (and which is sure to end up on a lot of end of year lists), so check out all six of its songs here now:
