So many artists, so little time. Each week we review five new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…

RUFUS WAINWRIGHT – “SWORD OF DAMOCLES”

“’Sword of Damocles’ is my artistic response to what I see currently transpiring within the American government and how its collapse is affecting every aspect of existence for us all,” says Rufus Wainwright of his new single. “With the Midterm Elections around the corner, it’s important for everyone to take a stand and contribute in some way – whether it’s bringing awareness to issues in your community, protesting/demonstrating, watching the news to formulate your own opinions, creating, yelling – it’s all hands on deck.” The video for “Sword of Damocles” opens with these titles: “Dear Mr. President, this ancient story, from the 4th century, reminds me of you.”

YOUNG FATHERS – “COCOA SUGAR”

Young Fathers released Cocoa Sugar earlier this year, and now they’ve shared a new song from the 2017 recording sessions that produced the album, which also shares the album’s name. Kayus Bankole describes “Cocoa Sugar” as “a sweet lullaby for my cocoa sugar – my love. Stay warm, stay safe and goodbye.”

ACTION BRONSON – “SWERVE ON EM” (ft. A$AP ROCKY)

Action Bronson is releasing his new album White Bronco at midnight and one more song has surfaced ahead of its release, “Swerve On Em” ft. A$AP Rocky. The two New York rappers are at the top of their games as they go back and forth with each other over the song’s kinetic production. It’s a fun song, and it’s nice to hear these two old friends on a track together again.

THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART – “FREE FALLIN'” (TOM PETTY COVER)

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart released their full-album cover of Petty’s Full Moon Fever last week, which is currently only on vinyl via Sounds Delicious series. They have, however, just shared their take on the iconic “Free Fallin'” which is pretty faithful to the original.

THEOPHILUS LONDON – “ONLY YOU’ FT. TAME IMPALA

When Smokey Bear told kids “Only you can prevent forest fires,” he was talking to all of us. When Theophilus London sings “Only you can put out this fire,” it’s clear he’s got a specific person in mind. That person is not Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker, but he did work on this song and is in the video.

TOUCHE AMORE – “NEW HALLOWEEN” (live)

Touche Amore have shared another song/video from their upcoming live album, and given the day of the year, they went with “New Halloween.” As the previous songs/videos have done, it does a perfect job of showing how powerful Touche’s live show is.

GUIDED BY VOICES – “COHESIVE SCOOP”

You may recall that Guided by Voices will release double album Zeppelin Over China in February, but they’ve got another record, titled Warp and Woof, that’s out in April. Sort of. As Magnet relays, the record will first be released as four vinyl-only EPs: Winecork Stonehenge and 100 Dougs are out December 7; while Umlaut Over The Özoneand 1901 Acid Rock are out in March. L.A. WITCH – “HAUNTING”

If your band’s name is L.A. Witch, you’re pretty much obligated to release something on Halloween, and here we have “Haunting” which is from the Los Angeles garage rockers’ new EP titled Octubre, which will be out…November 2. Missed it by that much.

FLATBUSH ZOMBIES – “NEW WORLD ORDER”

The Flatbush Zombies are the kind of group that always work well with Halloween, so it’s a very good thing that they decided to put out a new song today. It’s even better that “New World Order” has the kind of creepy production that you could picture soundtracking a horror flick.

PLAGUE VENDOR – “LOCOMOTIVE”

“Locomotive” follows Plague Vendor’s recent single “I Only Speak In Friction,” both of which were recorded by Epitaph founder and Bad Religion guitarist Brett Gurewitz. Plague Vendor have also been in the studio with John Congleton working on their next album, which will come out at some point via Epitaph (most details TBA). Meanwhile, “Locomotive” starts out as dark, moody garage punk with hints of X or The Cramps, and then explodes into a chorus that early 2000s era Jack White probably would’ve liked to have written.

CURREN$Y & FREDDIE GIBBS – FETTI MIXTAPE (PROD. THE ALCHEMIST)

Curren$y and Freddie Gibbs are two contemporary rappers who make music you could imagine coming out of 1996, and The Alchemist tends to make beats that recall that era too, so needless to say, the three of them sound perfect together on this new collaborative mixtape.

ANAL TRUMP – THE FIRST 100 SONGS (PART 1)

Rob Crow (Pinback, etc) and Travis Ryan (Cattle Decapitation) make up the anti-Trump grindcore duo Anal Trump, who have been releasing albums/EPs of parody/protest songs that tend to clock in at just a few seconds each. Now they’re compiling their first five EPs and three new ones for the 100-track, 11-minute The First 100 Songs, that’s out on Election Day (11/6) via Joyful Noise. A 2:57-segment of the album is streaming now. Rob Crow told Decibel, “Protest music is boring and usually created by folks that actually want people to pay attention to them instead of the problem. Even when it works, history has shown that as soon as an asshole understands a playbook, it gets twisted into the asshole’s bank account. From love beads at Sears to Crass patches at Hot Topic. That’s why I created this thing from the point of view of the asshole, gave the downloads away for free initially, and then to various charities. It’s funny how many “extreme” people find that offensive. So many jerk-offs act so fucking tough, but an act of kindness makes them get all bent out of shape. Pretty soon, just looking out for one another will seem revolutionary.”

CONOR OBERST – “LAX” (ft. PHOEBE BRIDGERS, prod. SIMONE FELICE)

Conor Oberst released a finished version of “LAX” (which came out previously as a demo) and this version features vocals by Phoebe Bridgers and production by Simone Felice. Read more here.

INTEGRITY – “BARK AT THE MOON” (OZZY OSBOURNE COVER)

Metallic hardcore greats Integrity are celebrating Halloween with a cover of an Ozzy classic, which we wrote more about here.

SAVAK – “DOOR DEALS AND DEBT”

Brooklyn’s SAVAK demystify all the indie rock glamor in their new video which has them hauling their gear from their practice space to the gig. “Door Deals and Debt” is from the forthcoming Beg Your Pardon. Your back may hurt after watching.

POPPY – “PLAY DESTROY” (ft. GRIMES)

Grimes appears on a new song by YouTube sensation turned Mad Decent-signed pop singer Poppy, which we wrote more about here.

IMOGEN HEAP – “GODRIC’S HOLLOW”

Imogen Heap’s score for the stage production of Harry Potter & The Cursed Child is being released as an album on Friday, with four suites made up of music from each of the play’s four acts. Following the first two tracks, she’s shared a third, “Godric’s Hollow,” another whimsical look into the world of the play.
