2016 records overlooked by Pitchfork (according to Pitchfork)

Pinegrove at BV-SXSW 2016 (more by Amanda Hatfield)

Like they do every year, Pitchfork uses the mid-year period to put out a list of Overlooked Albums of the year. Here’s the criteria:

Some of these are interesting records that didn’t end up on the review schedule for one reason or another, some are from more niche genres that fly under the radar, and some are staff favorites that we think deserve another listen. None of these releases received a Best New Music designation and not all were rated above an 8.0, but all are records worth revisiting.

There’s plenty of cool stuff on there, like Pinegrove, YG, KING, Steve Gunn, Stereolab offshoot Cavern of Anti-Matter, Kaytranada, XXL Freshman Lil Uzi Vert, and more.

There’s also some stuff from way outside the indie/pop/etc spectrum like the Gqom Oh! The Sound of Durban Vol.1 compilation. “‘Gqom’—the name of a hard-charging style of electronic music from Durban, South Africa–is an onomatopoeic Zulu term for ‘drum,’ and said to mimic the sound of a rock hitting the floor,” P4k’s Philip Sherburne writes.
