2017 Emmy Nominations: ‘Stranger Things,’ ‘Westworld,’ ‘Atlanta,’ Jack White, & more

westworld

The 2017 Emmy nominations were just announced and Westworld and Saturday Night Live leading the pack with 22 nods each.  HBO’s sci-fi hit was nominated for Outstanding Drama, alongside The Crown, The Handmaids Tale, Stranger Things, Better Call Saul, House of Cards, and This is Us. A lot of strong competition there. (The Leftovers was robbed, though.) On the Outstanding Comedy list there’s Master of None, Veep, Atlanta, Silicon Valley, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Black-ish, and Modern Family.

Atlanta scored six nominations, including three for Donald Glover (lead actor, writing, directing). Aziz Ansari scored actor and writing nominations for Master of None (which received eight noms total). Riz Ahmed (of Swet Shop Boys) was nominated lead actor in a limited series for The Night Of (which got 13 nominations total). Fargo‘s third season got nominated for 16 awards.

Netflix’s Stranger Things got a total of 18, including a nomination for S U R V I V E’s Michael Stein & Kyle Dixon‘s Main Title & Theme Music Also nominated in this catagory are Mac Quale (who also scores Mr. Robot) was nominated for Feud: Bette and Joan, Hans Zimmer & Lorne Balfe were nominated for Genius,  Ramin Djawadi (who scores Game of Thrones too) for Westworld; John David Buckley was nominated  for The Good Fight; and Martin Phipps for Victoria

In the Outstanding Music & Lyrics category it’s: Common, Robert Glasper, & Karriem Riggins for “Letter To The Free” From 13th; Chance The Rapper, Kenan Thompson, Eli Brueggemann, & Will Stephen’s “Last Christmas” from Saturday Night Live; Adam Schlesinger (of Fountains of Wayne), Rachel Bloom, & Jack Dolgen for “We Tapped That Ass” from My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend; Christopher Willis, Darrick Bachman, & Paul Rudish for “Jing-A-Ling-A-Ling” From Duck The Halls: A Mickey Mouse Christmas Special; Jonathan Kimmel & Gary Greenberg for “The Ballad Of Claus Jorstad (Devil Stool)” from Jimmy Kimmel Live; and Jeff Richmond, Tina Fey, & Sam Means for “Hell No” from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

This is the first year that the Emmys have an Award for Music Supervision, and Zach Cowie & Kerri Drootin were nominated for Master of None, along with music supervisors for Big Little Lies, Girls, Stranger Things, and Better Call Saul. We think Maggie Phillips should’ve been nominated for Legion.

Meanwhile, Jack White was nominated for Music Direction, along with T Bone Burnett, Duke Erickson (of Garbage), and Bernard MacMahon for American Epic.

We would also be remiss to not mention that Snoop Dogg, along with Martha Stewart, was nominated for Outstanding Host For A Reality Or Reality-Competition Program for their show Snoop & Martha’s Potluck Dinner Party.

Also: Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein‘s Portlandia is up for Variety Sketch Series, along with Documentary Now! (also with Fred), Billy on the Street, Drunk History, Tracey Ullman’s Shows, and (likely winner) Saturday Night Live.

The 69th Emmy Awards will be broadcast live on CBS on September 17 from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles with Stephen Colbert as host. Full list of 2017 nominations is below.
