2018 Tony noms: Flaming Lips & more for 'Spongebob,' Bruce Springsteen, 'Harry Potter,' more

The 2018 Tony Award nominations were just announced, with Spongebob Squarepants: The Musical and Mean Girls leading the way with 12 nominations each. With Spongebob that means The Flaming Lips, John Legend, Steven Tyler & Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alex Ebert (Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros), Panic! at the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants, T.I., and the rest of the musical’s songwriters are now one step closer to an EGOT.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which is not a musical, was nominated for 10 Tonys, and Bruce Springsteen will receive a special Tony award for Springsteen on Broadway…he just needs an Emmy for an EGOT.

Elsewhere, The Band’s Visit (based on the 2007 Israeli film) and revivals of Angels in America and Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Carousel were each nominated for 11 Tonys. (Frozen got three). The 2018 Tony Awards will be given out Sunday, June 10 at Radio City Music Hall with hosts Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban. It will be broadcast live on CBS starting at 8 PM Eastern.
