Pinkish Black Concept Unification

21 New Metal Songs Out This Week

My favorite metal album of the year so far, Dead To A Dying World’s Elegy, came out today and you can read my review of that album here. I also wrote about the first Chokehold album in 20+ years and the new Blood Command EP in this week’s Notable Releases, and you can catch up on even more of this week’s new metal albums — like Allegaeon and Haze Mage — at Invisible Oranges’ ‘Upcoming Metal Releases.’ This week also saw new singles from Pinkish Black, Saint Vitus, Cadaver (first in 15 years), Earth, Helms Alee, Spirit Adrift, Full of Hell, Mastodon (Led Zeppelin cover), and more, plus an early stream of the Sunn O))) album, and still more. Read on for all the metal we posted on BV this week…

PINKISH BLACK – “UNTIL”

Pinkish Black are releasing their fourth album, Concept Unification, on June 14 via Relapse, and lead single “Until” marries sludgy, psychedelic riffage to gothy vocals in a very appealing way.

SAINT VITUS – “USELESS”

Saint Vitus have released the third single from their first album in 24 years with original vocalist Scott Reagers, and while the previous two singles showed off the band’s doomy riffage and howled vocals side, this one is straight-up hardcore punk. Saint Vitus did used to be on SST, after all.

CADAVER – “CIRCLE OF MORBIDITY”

Norwegian death metal vets Cadaver have reformed, with Dirk Verbeuren joining co-founder Anders Odden on drums. We wrote more about their first new song in 15 years, “Circle of Morbidity,” which features guest vocals by Possessed frontman Jeff Becerra, here.

EARTH – “THE COLOUR OF POISON”

Earth have shared a second single off their upcoming album Full Upon Her Burning Lips, and more so than the psychedelic lead single “Cats on the Briar,” this one really sees them in evil doom territory.

HELMS ALEE – “BEAT UP”

Helms Alee’s anticipated new album Noctiluca comes out next week via Sargent House, and they’ve just shared a third single from it, “Beat Up.” Previous singles saw Helms Alee going in a less metal direction than usual, but this one is pretty fucking heavy, and still with a psychedelic side.

SPIRIT ADRIFT – “ANGEL & ABYSS”

Spirit Adrift have hinted that their anticipated new album will branch out from the traditional doom metal they were initially grouped with, and third single “Angel & Abyss” makes that very clear. Each song released from this album so far has been different, but this one is way different. It’s a proggy ballad for the first 2/3 of the song, and then it becomes more of a driving, speedy metal song. It’s cool stuff, and definitely not “doom.”

FULL OF HELL – “SILMARIL”

Full of Hell have shared another in-your-face song off their anticipated new album Weeping Choir, and they say, “Silmaril is about the upheaval of forbidden knowledge. We enlisted Paulo Paguntalan, NYC’s own purveyor of gore and death for additional vocal duties on this song. ‘All goes onward and outward, all collapses’.”

MASTODON – “STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN” (LED ZEPPELIN COVER)

Last year, Mastodon’s longtime friend and manager Nick John sadly passed away. His favorite band (“besides us and Gorjia”) was Led Zeppelin, and Mastodon were asked to perform “Stairway to Heaven” at his funeral. After finding out that someone had recorded the performance, they decided to record a studio version and they released it on Record Store Day with all proceeds going to pancreatic cancer research. It’s a faithful, well-executed rendition, as you can hear for yourself:

HIGH ON FIRE – “BAT SALAD,” “INTO THE CRYPT OF RAYS” (CELTIC FROST COVER)” & “DON’T BOTHER ME” (BAD BRAINS COVER)

Last week, we heard High On Fire cover Thin Lizzy, and now we can hear them covering Celtic Frost and Bad Brains, along with their new original song “Bat Salad.” Those three songs came out as an EP on Record Store Day, and someone uploaded a vinyl rip online. They really make the covers their own, and the original sounds great too.

Update: Stream removed, stay tuned.

KAMPFAR – “SYNDEFALL”

Norwegian black metal vets Kampfar are releasing their new album Ofidians Manifest on May 3 via Indie Recordings, and the new single is the evil, gruesome, furious “Syndefall.”

ENTHRONED – “HOSANNA SATANA”

“The Earth with His glory! It is time to unveil the second single & video clip out of ‘Cold Black Suns:’ ‘Hosanna Satana!,'” says Belgian black metal vets Enthroned. This one’s even more of an attack that lead single “Silent Redemption,” and it’s keeping this album seeming very promising.

DEAFKIDS & RAKTA – “FORMA/SIGILO”

Experimental, genre-defying, heavy Brazilian band Deafkids are touring North America with Neurosis this year, and recently released a new album on Neurosis’ Neurot Recordings. They also just began a Europe tour with fellow Brazilian band Rakta, and have released a 13-minute collaboration with Rakta to celebrate. It’s pretty fucking out-there, in a good way.

HARM’S WAY – “CALL MY NAME” (JUSTIN BROADRICK REMIX)

Godflesh’s Justin Broadrick has offered up an industrial-tinged remix of hardcore crew Harm’s Way’s “Call My Name,” turning the song into something even more evil than it was already.

AMON AMARTH – “CRACK THE SKY”

Swedish death metal vets Amon Amarth unleashed another single off their upcoming album Berserker, due May 3 via Metal Blade.

DEAD TO A DYING WORLD – “VERNAL EQUINOX” (ft. JARBOE)

Dead To A Dying World’s excellent new album Elegy is out today (read our review), and one of its many treats is this gorgeous song where Swans/Neurosis collaborator Jarboe provides guest lead vocals.

NECKBEARD DEATHCAMP – “WHAT ARE THE CARGO POCKETS FOR LANZA? EXTRA MAGS?”

Antifascist metal band Neckbeard Deathcamp will release their new album SO MUCH FOR THE TOLERANT LEFT on May 24 via Prosthetic, and the brutal, claustrophobic lead single “WHAT ARE THE CARGO POCKETS FOR LANZA? EXRTRA MAGS?” is out now. The band provides this message with the album announcement:

In wrath-fuelled allegiance with the rising fires ov antifascist metal in America and in support ov their Free Speech in America tour with Dryad, No Convictions, Theories, and Wvrm. NECKBEARD DEATHCAMP presents the second assault ov their unstoppable crusade SO MUCH FOR THE TOLERANT LEFT.

SO MUCH FOR THE TOLERANT LEFT was recorded with the same contempt for clean production and music theory as WHITE NATIONALISM IS FOR BASEMENT DWELLING LOSERS and is forty minutes ov relentless hostility featuring guest vocals from Denis Boardman ov Doom and Karl Willets ov Bolt Thrower and Memorium.

FATHER BEFOULED – “HOLY ROTTEN BLOOD”

US death metal staples Father Befouled are releasing their new album Holy Rotten Blood on May 17 via Dark Descent, and you can hear the title track in all its brutal glory now.

STATE FAULTS – “MOON SIGN GEMNI”

State Faults’ 2013 sophomore album Resonate/Desperate immediately registered as one of the better modern screamo albums, but the band never got around to putting out a followup… until now, six years later. Their new LP Clairvoyant will be out on June 21 via No Sleep, and going by the 54-second lead single “Moon Sign Gemini,” they sound even more furious than ever. “‘Moon Sign Gemini’ deals with the exploration of the self, the unlocking of past traumas and dealing with intrusive anxious thoughts,” vocalist/guitarist Jonny Calvert-Andrew tells Revolver. “Trying to unravel who you are now and what made you how you are, and then contextualizing that within the uncertainty of the future.”

SUNN O))) – LIFE METAL (ALBUM STREAM)

Sunn O)))’s anticipated new album officially comes out tomorrow but you can stream it at NPR now. More info (and a chance to win tickets to their NYC show) here.
