21 New Songs Out Today
So many artists, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, show recaps, track premieres, and more all day. That includes a lot of tour announcements, a list of tonight’s NYC shows, and NY shows that just went on sale. We publish a monthly playlist of some of our favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place…
FRANCIS AND THE LIGHTS – “TAKE ME TO THE LIGHT” (ft. KANYE WEST & BON IVER)
Francis and the Lights is back with a new song that features two of past collaborators, Kanye West and Bon Iver, and it’s an atmospheric pop song that pretty much sounds like what you’d expect from this trio.

MIKAL CRONIN – “SHELTER”
“This is a song about searching for answers in an uncertain world,” says Cronin of “Shelter,” off his upcoming album, Seeker. “It’s about the observer reluctantly stepping out of their comfort zone and looking around, while trying to keep their head straight. Musically, it’s dense and polyrhythmic. The string line weaves it all together for me. When writing a song with a lot of additive looping rhythmic parts, I think of Brian Eno.”

METRONOMY – “WEDDING BELLS”
Metronomy’s new double album, Metronomy Forever, is due next week and here’s one final early taste. “Wedding Bells” is squarely in John Hughes territory — big synthpop with an unrequited love storyline.

ONE TRUE PAIRING (EX WILD BEASTS) – “DAWN AT THE FACTORY”
Tom Fleming, formerly of Wild Beasts, will release his first album as One True Pairing on September 20. His latest single is a bit of dark synthpop hitting on heavy issues: “I wanted to strip the romance back and look at what makes this country run, what makes it tick. The factories are hungry and it’s you they want. I wanted it to sound like the open road but there’s just too much barbed wire around it. The same every night. You do what you have to do. Knackered synths and a Floyd rose.”

ALESSIA CARA – “OCTOBER”
Alessia Cara is releasing a new EP, The Summer, this week, and its latest single is the chilled-out pop of “October.”

BAT FOR LASHES – “DESERT MAN”
Bat for Lashes’ new album Lost Girls is out this Friday, and she’s shared one final single ahead of its release, which continues the thread of strong ’80s inspiration from the ones that came before it.

ED ASKEW – SLEEPING WITH ANGELS
Folk legend Ed Askew remains highly prolific, and is now back with a new collection of songs recorded between May and August.

JENN CHAMPION – “UNDONE (THE SWEATER SONG)” (WEEZER COVER)
Onetime Carissa’s Wierd member Jenn Champion did a full-album cover of Weezer’s blue album, which came out today as the 14th release in Turntable Kitchen’s Sounds Delicious vinyl record club. “I knew I wanted to take a synth heavy approach to this album and in my mind the blue album was pretty straight forward indie power pop,” Jenn says. “But as I was deconstructing all the parts and putting the songs back together i realized how much nuance there is to Cuomo’s songwriting style. It’s a testament to his talent that he can make an entire record of songs we want to sing along to and don’t realize just how weird those songs are. I will say it was a challenge, a really fun challenge ! to keep true to what makes these songs so great while putting them through an electronic lens.”

DEB NEVER – HOUSE ON WHEELS EP
R&B singer Deb Never recently gained exposure thanks to a feature on Brockhampton’s moody single “No Halo,” and now she has dropped her newest EP, House on Wheels, on WeDidIt. The EP features production from close friend Dylan Brady, along with her WeDidIt labelmates Shlohmo and D33J. Similar to her atmospheric Brockhampton feature, the EP is filled with introspective moments and woozy, trap-influenced instrumentals.

1349 – “STRIDING THE CHASM”
1349 have shared another track off their anticipated The Infernal Pathway, and it’s six minutes of relentless fury.

STARGAZER LILIES – “LIVING WORK OF ART”
Shozegazy synthpop band The Stargazer Lilies will release Occabot on November 1 via Rad Cult. The album was produced by Tom Fec, aka TOBACCO, who dirties up their sound and turns up the volume, as you can hear on this first single. “It just hit me: they were way heavier than they seem,” Fec says, “and that wasn’t translating in their recordings. Their old stuff is panoramic and smooth; I wanted 3D and bumpy.”

RABIT – STAR BELLY (REMIXES OF MAZZY STAR, HOLE, MIA, MORE)
Chopped and screwed producer Rabit has just released a new mixtape, where her puts his twist on songs by Mazzy Star, Hole (mixed with Three 6 Mafia), Grouper, MIA, and more.

HETHER FORTUNE – “THE JOKER”
Former Wax Idols leader Hether Fortune has been releasing the occasional solo single, and the latest is the haunting, atmospheric “The Joker,” which Hether says is “a song I’ve been sitting on for nearly 2 years for whatever reason.”

PROCESS BLACK (ex-DEADGUY, KISS IT GOODBYE) – “LIES OVER TRUTH”
Process Black is the current project of former Deadguy / Kiss It Goodbye vocalist Tim Singer, along with guitarist Aaron Edge (Lumbar, Bible Black Tyrant, Ramprasad, etc) and drummer Brock Lowry (Craft Spells), and you can read more about “Lies Over Truth” from their upcoming EP on Deathwish here.

DAVID KILGOUR (THE CLEAN) – “LOOKS LIKE I’M RUNNING OUT”
The Clean’s David Kilgour will release his very lovely, very mellow new solo album, Bobbie’s a Girl, on September 20 via Merge (pre-order), and he’s just made a video for new single “Looks Like I’m Running Out” which focuses on one of his non-musical loves, surfing.

EMILY JANE WHITE – “LIGHT”
Dark folk singer Emily Jane White is releasing her new album Immanent Fire in November, and you can read more about the album and lead single “Light” here.

ILLUMINATI HOTTIES – “I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY (WHO LOVES ME)” (WHITNEY HOUSTON COVER)

CRYPT SERMON – THE RUINS OF FADING LIGHT (ALBUM STREAM)
Trad-doom revivalists Crypt Sermon have made a big leap with their anticipated sophomore album The Ruins of Fading Light, which is now streaming in full two weeks ahead of its scheduled release date of September 13th (via Dark Descent). Listen at Decibel and hear three songs below.
